UK Orgers Unite

It's been mentioned here before that the chart rules in the UK have changed to allow paid-for downloads to count in the UK Top 40 charts. It got me thinking recently, it would be a good idea to organise a campaign to get people to download the same song during Prince's birthday week so that he has his 2nd number 1 in the UK charts.

We could have a poll to decide which song, it could be an album track or anything, doesn't have to be a single, so long as you can pay to download it at the sites that are eligible for the charts.

Who's with me?

(A person that can make a nice website would be a good person to have on board for www.letsgetprincetonumber1.co.uk)

Thanks Jeffiner.

I thought it would be a great way for us all to mark his 50th birthday. I know he won't be, but that doesn't mean that we can't!

I expected more takers, but early days I guess. I was thinking we should try and get some Prince-friendly DJs on board too. Any suggestions?

I'd do it, but Purple Rain is always the top downloaded Prince song on iTunes. I would have preferred it if it was F.U.N.K

The idea is to select one song for everyone to download that same song in his birthday week. It doesn't have to be Purple Rain. Even Prince's worst songs are more worthy than a lot of the rubbish that has made it to number one in the UK charts.

Why not! Good idea.

I think id we do it, we should pick one of three things...

either...

1. A Classic that is ripe for the UK market. Kiss or When Doves Cry being the most obvious to me.

2. A Classic that was never a single. DMSR, Sometimes it snows, The Beautiful ones etc etc.

3. Something P owns the masters to. Basically 96 onward that we feel should have been a hit. My Computer? Style? Love Sign? The Last December? Or "Love" might be a great message...back to Prince!

I think the key is picking something that radio will pick up on. More chance of play. More chance of sales.

Cant get any of that on UK iTunes, not even the Sony/Universal albums. Only Black Sweat, Fury and Te Amo Corazon singles, but nothing from the albums.

Gr8 idea and Black Sweat a cool song just not sure we could get enough people on board. How many do we need for a number one these days

Good idear.

I think if Cinnimon Girl got the right air play, it has the potential 2 be a number 1 or big hit!

Also, Earth song should be a single.

Maybe we need a vote thread for a song we can get behind?

When Doves Cry?
Purple Rain?
Sometimes it Snows in April (Shouda been a single!)
Kiss?
Cinnammon Girl?
Black Sweat?
The 1 U wanna C?

Or...How about "Soft and Wet"? It was Prince's first ever single, released on his birthday, 30 years ago this year, the same year Prince is 50! Its perfect!

Soft & Wet would be perfect!! not sure about how much airplay it would get tho? I think it should either be a true classic that everyone knows or Black Sweat as it isn't WB and it could potentially get a lot of airplay.

Question - do they count all purchases from every pay to download website or just certain ones?

Also, I think this will work better if you/we circulate it to the other Prince sites too.

Nowhere.

Prince will never have another top ten hit again in the UK. Fact. Maybe never even a top 40 hit.

Utterly pointless, Prince doesn't recognise charts or birthdays anyway. So he wouldn't be bothered, he likes any bit of money he can get his hands on for sure though, so would probably appreciate this idea for that alone.

Yes, good idea, we need to make ALL Prince fans aware - not just those on sites - how? confused

We need a marketing type person or something, and does anyone know what amount of sales we'd need?

I don't agree, he may not be too bothered about top ten hits anymore, but I still think he'd be chuffed that his fans around the world had made a 'tribute' to him in this way nod I'm sure it can be done, we just need to get organised biggrin
