Do u think Prince is jugded wrongly by people who arnt even familiar with his talents?

well the otherday i went 2 my mates and left my computer on upstairs with P music blasting out, when i got back my uncle was sitting downstairs and had been listening 2 my P tunes and he really liked it(Adore was playing at the time) he told me 2 do him a cd and asked who it was,i sed it was Prince, his faced changed and he sed'why are u listening 2 that f***ing freak' and then went on about his name changin etc i thought it was funny that he liked it till i mentioned it was by P lol my dad 4 example says 'Prince more like f***ing Princess'infact i know alot of people and not 1 of them likes Prince(apart from my mum) my mates cant stand him, infact me and my mate tom,who is a big MJ fan me and him always hav banter debates about whos better.i seem 2 know loads of people who love MJ(im a fan of his music also even if he looks like Skeletor from He-Man)inact I know alot of every other popular artist there is fans, but when i mention Prince they seem 2 go on about the same shit as i hav stated above.I know P is a legend anyway(will b forever 2) but i dont know y it is this way,is it because of the way he dresses? his name changin? his religion? i just cant understand it 2 be honest hes such a great singer/songwriter/musician,but 2 be fair thinking about it b4 my mum brought Musicology 4 me 2 years ago,cuz she noticed i had no P albums in my collection and she loved him when she was younger,i did actually think he was weird that was ofcourse b4 i heard alot of his music(b4 hand i only knew 2 songs TMBGIW and Purple Rain) and now im a huge fan.thats why i love coming on here cuz ur the only people i can really talk 2 about P (apart from mum)anyway sorry 4 blabbing on i was just wondering if any1 else has these experiences with people they know? thanks - peace wink

Yes. My favorite one is when people start bagging on his height and somehow directly relating it to his music. Music they have never heard.

Okay, let me try this again [my reply didn't go through for some reason rolleyes ]

YES!! I do think people judge him unfairly and most of the judging is on looks alone. We have a little man (5' 2" w/o heels) who wears high heels, sometimes make-up, extravagent clothing, who screams in some of his songs and sings in falsetto. And his stage antics where he flaunts his sexuality... people think he's gay on sight and therefore turn their backs on him.

Then its his mixing sex with religion in his music. People aren't very comfortable with either of those aspects, especially sex.

Even though I don't take being supportive of Prince lightly, I'm hesistant to tell others just because I don't know what their perceptions of him are and in my liking him, they might judge my tastes.

Very early on, on appearances alone, I think Prince might have come across as a little strange to me. Several years later, when I was exposed to his movie and saw what he could do on stage, I saw beyond the surface: a dedicated and very talented musician.

In my own family, my dad exposed me to Prince and supports him. My mom dismisses him as an acquired taste, which is partially true, but I find some of his music takes a while to grow on me... she was talking about how he portrays himself onstage or even how the media portrays him.

I think that if those people who are skeptical of him would give him material a listen, they could look beyond the surface and see what a true musician is all about and appreciate his gifts.

yes it is called stereotyping and those that don't fit into people's stereotype of a typical pop/rock star etc. often get discounted - its common in lots of situations and very shortsighted by lazy people - and its their loss as well
"C'mon y'all - let me hear you sing, c'mon y'all, shake, c'mon y'all, jump" - Yes Prince -
"London do you feel for me what I feel for you"- yes Prince -
"Can I play my guitar now?" - yes please

I think that many non-fans will judge him wrongly simply because he's never portrayed the "typical" male, celebrity or otherwise. Oh well...their loss! wink

But yo, for real, if they got an issue with Prince then screw them. You know in your heart that you love and respecct the genius, so who cares what other folks think? It's just a reflection of their own ignorance.

A huge YES

The most common words/expressions that I get when I talk with some guys about Prince are "fag", "arrogant prick", "weirdo", "dated 80's pop", "overrated dance/pop fag" and other little gems lol confused

Nevertheless, other guys just think he plays pop/funky music "very similar to the sound of Michael Jackson" lol

Yep,i get all that 2,people sayin he's queer and all the rest of it,most of it was from my hubby....till i took him 2 see him at the O2,and then he said 'u've finally done it,u've converted me'.Says he's excellent now,and that his music is classy. So it just goes 2 show that people do judge him by his appearance and reputation.

If all these people had seen p live and had heard some of the unreleased tracks which we have heard they would change their minds!!
the reaction i get is always mixed!some of the younger guys i know think he has not released an album since the 90 s!! and that he had his day in the 80 s.After the aftershow partys of the 02 gigs I am ready to argue anybody who slags him off !!I can not belive people who take the piss or just too nieve to reckonize his talents!if only these people could have been with me on the 9th sept in the indigo they may change their view!!!

Does it matter ?? Some people just dont care for his celebrity or his music or talents. Some just find him odd

He is a man not a religion, I dont try to explain him or convert anyone to his music or talents. Its ones own choice and opinions.

nod and cream always rises to the top! Prince has had to deal with this his whole life, you can too, rise above it - if you talk to any REAL musicians I would guess they would understand where you're coming from. Hope that helps biggrin

You make no sense ....

no ,I dont have to deal with what Prince has dealt with his whole life nor speak to real musicians.

That was my point ....I
(myself) dont care what people think about Prince nor try to change the way they feel as well ..... Dig??

Anyone that I have talked to that has any musical talents whether it's singing or instrumentals admires Prince...also a surprising number of heavy metal or harder rock musicians/fans tend to admire him too. wink I think a lot of his stuff is too complicated for the masses and it almost helps to be a musician to fully appreciate much of his material.

It's not "no-brainer" music to be played on the radio. I don't think that I could listen to Prince music in the background while I worked....my job requires ALL of my attention and so does Prince's music! biggrin cool

Ok, calm down, obviously my fault the way I posted, I was using your post to demonstrate the point that Optimus doesn't need to try and explain or try to convert anyone, as I thought it was a good point.

When I said P has had to rise above these 'stereotypes' all his life and that he could too, it was just a suggestion to the original poster Optimus, and was meant in a light-hearted way. The 'real musicians' part was again aimed at Optimus and simply was a suggestion that people who understand music would be more forgiving re P.

Perhaps if you read the thread as a whole rather than assuming I'm just responding to you, it would make more sense.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. but perhaps you should slow down yourself, you sound like a school teacher... Oh, and the 'cream' bit - just bit of fun, that's what I come on here for....dig?

i can understand that, a neighbour of mine called up to my place last week, totally stoned, he definitely does not like prince, and i had the PE cd playing when he came in, suddenly he looks at me and ask´s what is that. I just grinned and said prince, he grinned and replied, "nice beats man" to my amazement, he made a nice joint while we played it out cool

Well, my brother (11) started playing guitar recently so I told him he should get into Prince because it's open his ears to a bunch of styles of music. I got two things from him

I think he's gay

And he only plays covers of other people's songs (he was basing this off of the Super Bowl perfomance with the Foo Fighters song and All Along the Watchtower)

Well, I told him, sexual preference has nothing to do with musical ability, and if you heard his lyrics, you'd know he wasn't gay. And the covers thing wasn't copying, it was a "tribute" (was the only was I could describe it).

So i think he does get judged quite a bit by people that aren't familiar with it.
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Princes image is without doubt the reason why many people dont get/understand him, it was something i had never really thought about till i had seen so many threads about it here, prince has like so many of us, has got older, some of us have naturally got older as well, and our days of running riot in our underpants are well behind us, I Hope, razz

I personally am proud that over time Prince has proved that he is very sophisticated and has style, i got bashed alot when i was young about how obnoxious he was, but he has proved them all wrong, even my mother admires him now lol
