exactly! Prince should recognize that the bootlegs are good for his artistic image and have caused a lot more business from people like us. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I can honestly say i use to gett stuff with this guy in Chicago, and i asked him one time about where he got it and he said that Prince &co lets it out there, this was especially the case in the 94-96 era, where stuff was everywhere, and im talking cds, and videos never released and concerts, studio footage, this was all being let out there. One time he did tell me that Prince's dj, brother Jules said that Prince would let things go when he felt something needed to be out there, and he was infamous for it. Now i dont know if its fact, but i have heard things like this from certain other artists, so its always in question
As for the Record store incident i do know the store and that was one of the main stores here in NYC, though the store mentioned (generation records) denied it to me. In my opinion: If you/they are talking about The Undertaker album (stopped by Warners AFTER Prince had cd's manufactured) and then the few The Gold Experience/Come/Glam Slam Ulysses tracks (leaked on european radio) then yeah, Prince had a hand indirectly, but not in the buckets of bootleg stuff that many people think he must be behind. the 80's stuff i dont think he had a hand in, i think that was studio people just taking tapes and letting them out there, i just think Prince didnt know how to control things then, but in the 90's i would say that he or someone close was using that as a "back channel" to getting work out there that he knew WB would never release just because of the relationship between them, so all of that stuff "studio wise" i think was "known". The extensive amounts of studio outtakes have actually helped Prince's image over the years, and his reputation as a extremely prolific musician. It illustrates in a real way how the released albums were just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the material he's actually recorded.

BorisFishpaw said: Prince is well aware of the existence of bootlegs of his material. He's also well
aware of how these things come to be in existence. However, the question was whether Prince has a direct hand in making bootlegs (i.e. deliberately supplying bootleggers with material or making them himself) and the answer to that is definitely "No". The sources where bootlegs originate are well known (which is why I can be so definite in my answer, and not qualify it with an "I think.." or "IMO..."). You will also notice that since Prince got complete control in the latter 90's, the appearance on bootlegged new material as pretty much dried up completely. nice informative info BorisFishpaw

No, you're not "pretty sure". You made up some dumb shit without thinking and now you try to pass that on as truth. LISTEN and PAY ATTENTION to what is said by people who KNOW what they're talking about. Read BorisFishpaw's post, read my post: no "I think that" or "my guess is" BS, but plain facts: Prince has got NOTHING to do with the boots. Who the fuck are you? My schoolteacher or something? If they aren't Prince, they don't know what he's done or hasn't done. So, this post is just about people's opinions. You aren't Prince "der Fuhrer". So, get the fuck off your high-horse. Unfortunately here in the U.K. we didn't have the priviledge of Larry King. How did Prince come across as he said it? Was he all angry and mad because he hates bootlegs so much, so to be most bootlegged artist of all time is nothing less than soul destroying??? OR Was it a bold and confident statement that could be possibly be perceived as nothing but blatant bragging???? It was one of the first things they talked about when Larry started off by saying "What have you been doing?" and he talked about Crystal Ball and how he was one of the most bootlegged artists out there and he wanted to 'clean that up' He wasn't angry, more matter of fact and he considered bootlegged material 'stolen property'. I was tempted to send Larry some stuff

If you have any interest in Boots I'd recommend giving this book a read. It'll give you an idea of some of the many ways in which boots come into existence. The artist is rarely the source. They have varying degrees of tolerance. Prince is probably the least tolerant artist there is now.
Remember, a copy of a song only needs to get into one pair of hands that is willing to pass it along. A studio engineer could pass it to a friend and say "If you let anyone else listen to this I will KILL YOU!!" and so on and so on. The chain of command only has to break down once and the further removed from the original source, the less control. Alot of the sources, such as The Avenue video are several generations removed from the source (a copy of a copy of a copy). Live boots are either a guy standing in the crowd with a DAT shoved down his trousers or audio rips of broadcasted material. Soundboard releases of unbroadcasted material are more and more rare (was ONA Vega aftershow the last? That's over 4 years ago). Anyway, this is an interesting book.

like alot of things with Prince, his view on bootlegs is very much a double edged sword, which is wise on P´s part, as I am sure, he realises they play an intricate part of his legacy and legend. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Then why would he have stopped them for the last 10 or so years? I agree with ufo. If dude was responsible for bootlegs, then we would be up to our necks in "unreleased material" from the last ten years

Then why would he have stopped them for the last 10 or so years? This is merely speculation, but since P left WB, he has increased his official output, either thru actual label releases or thru his various websites. Coupled with the fact, that has been mentioned a few times, that he now obviously has far greater control over leakages. I reckon if one was to measure the volume since 1996, it would probably be comparable with that which was previously released plus outtakes. I think the bootlegs only started to really bother Prince, when it was in direct competition of his own methods of releasing music thru his websites. I doubt he was directly involved in any bootlegs during the 80´s early 90´s, but he certainly turned a blind eye on it at the time, probably he saw it as a way of keeping his hardcore fanbase focused on him. Think about the fact that so much of the outtake bootleg stuff is basically made up of music which WB refused to release. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Amazingly incorrect. probably incorrect, but a fair share of unreleased material appeared from aborted P projects which later turned up on other albums or was left solely as outtakes, WB or not, P certainly got a kick out of being one of the most bootlegged artists ever. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

A better question would be "Why doesn't he put this stuff out?"
The studio outtakes have future potential for him. But the live concerts and aftershows...? What use is waiting till he's dead before this stuff gets released? Is he already thinking of the Prince Estate? He must realise we want this stuff NOW. While theres probably a limited market for it, he could make some dough out of it. I suspect he's too much of a perfectionist and hears faults in it that we don't (which is why he often overdubs live stuff). "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

After the 2000 Celly I went to NY and found a record store in the East Village called something- "Vinyl" (Final Vinyl?). Anyway, the guy there said that in the 80s to mid 90s records used to just arrive from MPLS with no clear source. It sounds a little mysterious, but he was giving 1st-hand info from his pov. I think he said, or implied, that they were being given away to select wrecka stow's... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
