Counter thread: 1999 Appreciation

Prince - 1999 [October 27, 1982]

1. "1999" – 6:22
2. "Little Red Corvette" – 4:58
3. "Delirious" – 3:56
4. "Let's Pretend We're Married" – 7:21
5. "D.M.S.R." – 8:17 (omitted from original CD due to time contraints)
6. "Automatic" – 9:28
7. "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" – 4:02
8. "Free" – 5:08
9. "Lady Cab Driver" – 8:19
10. "All the Critics Love U in New York" – 5:59
11. "International Lover" – 6:37

What a classic record! You take out "Delirious" and you have perfection. To me, this album is 4.5/5 and the only reason I take half a point away is because of "Delerious." It's not a bad song, but I dislike the rockabilly feel of it.

Lady Cab Driver, D.M.S.R., the title track, Let's Pretend We're Married, Something in the Water... Sh*t!!! Every damn track is nuts! "International Lover" is almost comical, but you can't deny the mood it sets when you got your girl butt-ass on that love seat.

I love this record! It's as relevant today as it was in 1982. You put this on and its the ultimate escape from the bullshit corporate world and dull lives we live every day. Its raw emotion and real hornyness!

yep - most prince fans know how important this record is. I think its a great classic and will always consider it to be.

I would be shocked if everyone liked it though, thats Prince, there isnt a record that everyone agrees on. 1999 is great to me, and I beleive to many other orgers

Always in my top 5 all time favorite albums! While I admit sometimes I get tired of hearing some of the bigger hits at times,it's still a remarkable package song by song recorded during one of Prince's strongest creative eras.

There were probably two songs that I took out at one time or another to get this album to work for me.

Initally, I stopped listening to "All the Critics"... cuz I just didnt get it... and it sounded almost identical to "Purple Music", which I have among other things.
DMSR is one that I just never get around to listening to anymore... "Let's Pretend We're Married," I just dig and get so into that I just press the skip button to get to Automatic to continue on that high...
I just don't get into the song at all... too long and its just a party song with the same thing repeated over and over... it doesnt do anything for me. Seeing him do it live might change my mind... but that won't be for a while.

Otherwise, it's a brilliant record, one of my top 6.
I think the storyline that goes from Automatic & Something in the Water is brilliant... some deep stuff and the 2nd has a bittersweet taste to it.
Free, I've really gotten to appreciate and it's just very sweet.

International Lover is cheesy, but I be diggin' it just the same cool

1999 stands on it's own.. it's not over shadowed by Purple Rain...pre-PR..the album was out in left field ..and i dug that..i fell in love with '1999 Prince' ...i dont know what happened back in 82' that inspired Prince to write like he did with this album.. but Prince just had this great nact in the 80's of writing back to back great albums and each album had its own flavor you could appreciated.. he did the same thing with Parade, Sign O'The Times, (BlackAlbum) Lovesexy .... he wrote all 4 of those albums back to back.. all having different themes...when I thought i couldnt get over Parade, here comes SOTT... he's just gifted to write music like that

Alot has been said over the years about SOTT and PR being Prince´s defining albums, but I think 1999 has aged better than both of those. It is simply such a solid album, with so much depth. It has so many outstanding tracks, that simply drip with funk and a nice underlying dash of rock.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

one of my top 5 favorite albums. i love the songs that go on and on and he does that best on this album. "automatic" is my favorite like this and "lady cab driver" and "let's pretend we're married"...fuck it,every song is awesome. because the first three tracks are the most recognizable(among non-fans,of course),the rest of the album is kind of hard to get in to at first. especially since all of them are so long. but once you get past that, this album is really a defining moment. love this album. probably more than purple rain(not as much as sign o the times, nothing beats that,in my book)as it deserves just as much props. cool

Same for me. #1 in my book. I loved everything the first time I heard it, Something In The Water is my favorite song of all time. While most people were into Thriller, I was spinning 1999 over and over.

Prince in a pilot uniform? I didn't get that visual at all... I know he's talking about a plane, but that never occured to me. shrug Go figure.

But as a whole... I think Prince is an artist you can't fully dive into (or commit to, w/e works for you) until you're old enough to actually understand what he's talking about, haha. If I was in high school while listening to some of this, I wouldn't understand or have the appreciation for it that I do now.

Let's Pretend We're Married, Automatic & International Lover are some of the most risqué things he's ever done. The good part was that I was actually prepared for the first of the 3... everyone knows that one little line from it that's the sole reason a lot of people like it at all. I did the whole thing with the keyboards... kinda hypnotizes you, though. Then the last 30 seconds is awesome just cuz he's tellin' it like he is.
Props 4 bringing Honesty out into the open (saying it opposed 2 singing it) cool

I like this album a lot. I think I'd like it more, and it would be perfect, if he'd just left Free off. Also, as much as I like Lady Cab Driver, it sounds more like a Time track to me. At least for that period. Same with International Lover, even though I love it too.

Minus those 3, it could be even better, I think. A really tight single disc.

Though I do like the album as it is.
