Valid point. For those who say "Prince has changed, deal with it...." -- remember the Sign O Times tour -- and Lovesexy/Nude tour? He played so many songs (almost all songs) that were written and released within 2 years of the tour - and people in the audience are SINGING ALONG. Today, if Prince made a tour comprising 80% songs written in the past 3 years, fuck that - lets say the past 8 years -- only the die-hards would be singing along and no one would know what in the world he's playing - - he's stuck having to play the "hits" to sell concert seats. This wasn't the case in 1988. So say what you want about Prince playing different music - more power to him -- if it was GOOD, he could sustain a tour playing songs from this new era, but the fact is he cannot. So this is why Prince is an Oldies act now. Sad but true. prior 2 the pfu debacle i would have so loved and have said that he should do more recent material than the old. but now i could care less if he did cause i won't pay 2 c him do material that's over 20 years old and keep boasting "i've got so many hits" he turned in2 a oldies act once he set up camp in vegas man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yep, my 4 year old! is crazy about Prince - there's a whole new generation of Prince fans out there. If all these kids follow the example of his 'musicianship' there's hope for the future. I also notice there are LOTS of people in their late teens, early twenties who are huge fans now. BTW when was the last time The Rolling Stones (and MANY other 'big' names) sold concert seats on the back of their NEW music? Fans do? Or casual listeners do. I want to hear stuff I haven't heard him do live before, but casual concert goers want to hear the songs they know. But i think its the same with all singers, when sumone goes to ur shows or concerts they EXPECT u 2 play the Hits cuz thats wat ur famous 4 and thats wat the not-so-die-hard fans know. Well, Bob George would freak anyone out. I never really liked it much myself I must say. I wasn't yet a fan when Lovesexy came out, but most people seem to agree Americans were put off by the album cover. Many record shops wouldn't even put it on display. So it makes sense there'd be people at the US shows waiting for the hits, but remember those hits were themselves quite new when you think about it. "Kiss" was only two years old. The SOTT songs were only a year old. And furthermore, everyone I've spoken to and all the fotage I've seen confirms that the Europeans went nuts for the whole show. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Out of a 30+ song setlist that's not bad. And about the same for songs from the past couple of albums. http://pagesperso-orange....index.html Either way, it's pretty much common knowledge that the big shows aren't for the hardcore fan who just wants to hear a live version of Moonbeam Levelst. Personally, I could never hear him do Let's Go Crazy again and I'd be fine with that. But alot of the oldies, hits and non-hit favorites, have held up for a reason, so I don't mind hearing most of those songs, even if I have heard them a million times before. Youve obviously forgotten the string of aftershows he did where he played lots of songs that werent hits and got the audience cheering and singing along . In fact it seems everyone on this thread whose obsessed with making out that Prince just plays old hits from the 1980s is completely oblivious to the aftershows and their setlists . Non-hits from the mid 90s like Chaos and disorder and I Like It There were played to rapturous responses. Wall said: The last time Prince played to American audiences in an arena and was playing new material was 1988. Even then, he had trouble selling out venues. He hasn't had a bonafied hit since the early 90's. And the only time people were singing along in large venues to new music was the Purple Rain tour. People were already coming to the Parade and Lovesexy tours to hear the hits.
Congratulations Wall , your posts continue to show you up as completely clueless , Prince played pretty much the entire album in the 1993 act 1 US Tour . Whats your definition of a bonafide hit by the way , TMBGITW was a near-worldwide no.1 hit in 1994 which is the mid-90s , and other tracks have been number 1s , Last December was a no.1 somewhere in the far east I recall (and dont even think of making out the japanese market isnt significant ) . And to those who say that Prince doesn't premiere new songs on his tours anymore , the ONA Tour featured the still unreleased "U Want Me" and the Musicology tour regularly featured the then unreleased Black Sweat along with The Rules. Prince still does the unexpected. No one expected the ONA Tour but it came and there was something different with every show. I'm sure the next time Prince tours, there will be something different. He's the one that's tarnished his own image with idiotic behavior- the man has an ego ten times greater than his talent (which has already been overrated). He enjoyed a bump in popularity when the MTV generation felt nostalgic following the Super Bowl performance but it's over Prince...you might as well switch to Jazz
...the only records that will stay in print 20 years from now will be his Warner Bros output. An "Oldie" knows what the "Oldies" are...lololol. Also, Most of the modern acts won't make it past 30 in this market.. Look at most of the entetainers that are popular.. Americans aren't buying CDs much because of technology. I beleive that some of these entertainers are riding that "Maddona-like-wave" of relationships over music. The, its Publicity over music. Drug habits for publicity (which cause publicity and sympathy for the right entertainers). Re-hash music over music. Scandals over music.. Why? They are all nearing 30, and so are their "fans". If you are 27, you may be in trouble already in this industry (and most of the "modern popular elite entertainers" are about 26-28). These companies will push them out too, even faste---before they ask for a 2nd or 3rd major contract. So, you won't ever see too many "80's Established Pop-rocker Contracts" anymore.." The CD/Album may be over.. Entertainers are said to be platinum by "records shipped, and not sold" and projections. Nobody, is doing as well as it seems.. The best thing to do is sell your own CDs and DVDs as Prince began to do. The industry is shot,IMHO.
