Prince is An Oldies Act Now That's why he's having this mid-life crisis. This self-destructive hissy fit about his image. He's the one that's tarnished his own image with idiotic behavior- the man has an ego ten times greater than his talent (which has already been overrated). He enjoyed a bump in popularity when the MTV generation felt nostalgic following the Super Bowl performance but it's over Prince...you might as well switch to Jazz
...the only records that will stay in print 20 years from now will be his Warner Bros output.

Irronically enough, this may be why he dug a track from vault from the Warners era and rehashed it and released as his supposedly answer track to PFU. During the Warners era, he material had more substance. And, the nails was put on the casket after the advent of 3121.

Valid point. For those who say "Prince has changed, deal with it...." -- remember the Sign O Times tour -- and Lovesexy/Nude tour? He played so many songs (almost all songs) that were written and released within 2 years of the tour - and people in the audience are SINGING ALONG. Today, if Prince made a tour comprising 80% songs written in the past 3 years, fuck that - lets say the past 8 years -- only the die-hards would be singing along and no one would know what in the world he's playing - - he's stuck having to play the "hits" to sell concert seats. This wasn't the case in 1988. So say what you want about Prince playing different music - more power to him -- if it was GOOD, he could sustain a tour playing songs from this new era, but the fact is he cannot. So this is why Prince is an Oldies act now. Sad but true.

I was singing along loudly to For You in my kitchen with my mp3 player when my 9 year old yelled who wrote that song. So I told her it's Prince and let her listen to that minute or so of his acapella. With raised eyebrows she said that's Prince, that's really nice acapella. I love her reaction to his music and I realize that it will take his real fans to truly introduce the next generation to his genius past present and future. I accept the challenge.... She wants to see him in concert and she knows quite a few of his songs because I cautiously expose her to his tame work. I have every album and fully intend to let hear it all when she's older.

I'm not sure what Prince has left in him, but he is very much a legacy act now.
Folks didn't pack the stadiums in the last 5 years to hear new material. Hell, they probably didn't pack the stadiums the last 10 years to hear new material.

I'd say that,in the USA, since 1984 the masses have gone to a Prince concerts mostly hoping to hear things from the Purple Rain soundtrack. Why do you think he toured mostly in Europe after that? I doubt that most of the people who showed up in 1988 for the Lovesexy tour were hoping to hear "eye no". Similarly, I doubt that those who showed of for Act 1 of the shows were hoping to hear "My name is Prince" rather than "When Doves Cry". That being said, Prince is still the greatest live act going and no one ever shows up at anyone's concerts hoping to hear the new stuff. Ask U2, Springsteen, The Stones, or any other HUGE concert draw. Fans show up for the old favorites and the hits. [Edited 11/14/07 20:55pm] "New Power slide...."

If this current drama is mid-life crisis related then he's been on a 25 year mid-life crisis. He's no stranger to ego or drama. From retiring after ATWIAD, to rejecting all his hard earned R&B fans (the vainandy contingent), to um, let me see, going to war with WB and changing his name to a symbol, then there was the beef with fansites several years ago, now this.. And I've skipped soooo much.
Prince is an established artist, that comes with benefits and baggage. He could totally embrace the fansites, open the vaults, and release amazing new music a-la Radiohead's model from now on. And the people would still expect to hear Purple Rain at the concerts. This has little to do with a mid-life crisis, imho, and looks alot more like Prince being Prince. . there are about 50 artist right now, some of them all over the charts that can only dream of being a legacy artist 20 years from now. Justin would give his right leg to have a guranteed place in the pantheon of greats 20 years from now. but it's not a sure bet, and prince did some things to jeapordize it but for better or worse he's there, he's a legend now. WE want to see the stones do brown sugar, we want to see springsteen do born to run and now we pay top dollar to see prince do purple rain. He's blessed 2 still be here and even if he is being a jerk he's no less human, we all are getting older, more conservative and crankier every day, we just dont have to play it out under public scrutiny.

An oldies act?? I don't think so! There's nobody around who can captivate an audience the way Prince can.

Yep, my 4 year old! is crazy about Prince - there's a whole new generation of Prince fans out there. If all these kids follow the example of his 'musicianship' there's hope for the future. I also notice there are LOTS of people in their late teens, early twenties who are huge fans now. BTW when was the last time The Rolling Stones (and MANY other 'big' names) sold concert seats on the back of their NEW music? At least Prince makes new music...

Oh, and they may come to hear the 'hits' but once they hit an aftershow, no matter what he's playing - they realise they're listening to something VERY special and are hooked for life!!!
One other thing, how many other big acts have such a huge number of hits to choose from when doing a hits show - and change the setlist EVERY night?!

Fans do? Or casual listeners do. I want to hear stuff I haven't heard him do live before, but casual concert goers want to hear the songs they know. As far as this goes, Prince has always been in a great position - the show is for the mass audience, the aftershow is for the diehards.
