i don't feel like the words in the song have effectively "put us in our place", answered any questions, or shed any insight into what's going on. it reminds me of a muhammad ali novelty single from the 70s - funky, catchy, but nothing but a bunch of empty bravado and hubris. i think the song itself is harmless. he's thumbing his nose at us, and being silly. i think it's entertaining. i hope it's a sign of confidence that he actually DOES know what he's doing and that some kind of successful closure is on the way. but maybe not. we all know the man is snack cake short of a full box of ho-hos.

You know what, it's not even like that. I don't like what he is doing anymore than you do, but Prince is not my life - he's a guy who's music I enjoy. If he was no longer in my life...I would enjoy the albums, DVDs etc I already have. I would miss him but won't be the end of the world...and no disrespect but the same goes for the Org.

I enjoy being here, chatting with people about stuff but again, if it wasn't here I would miss it but...

Sorry but thems that facts.

I can't be all mad and stuff about things I can't change.

[Edited 11/8/07 15:50pm]

But that's the point you're missing. Getting mad can change things! If we hadn't got mad, the folks that can change things wouldn't have bothered to even try! Things may work out or they may not but at least there is now a glimmer of hope that they might. Which is a hell of a lot more than we had being passive!

What's cool about Prince taking a name that originally referred to some"one" else? Websheriff is all up on our asses about using the very word "Prince", but it's okay for Prince to do it with PFU? Sorry, decidedly NOT cool, but the hypocrisy is not surprising, either.

Fair point, maybe you're right, but at the moment nothing really has changed. Everything is still up in the air.

And if Prince really is the bastard some people think he is, and if he really doesn't give a shit about his fans and fansite? - then nothing is gonna change.

On the other hand, if as some are saying this was all a stunt, then things would have change anyway once he made his point, in which case what do I do with my anger? Do I carry it around with me from that point on.

Lyrically thought, I don't think its written about the last few days. Probably something older being passed off for the moment.

One thing has changed.
At least now they're negotiating.
That's something.

And you guys are right. If we hadn't gotten mad about it, then i don't think that they'd be talking about it right now. So i think all of this was productive.

It'll remain to be seen if they can work out some kind of agreement. I hope they can. That's all the fans really want is for Prince to be fair with these sites. As much as he would like to, he doesn't have the right to CONTROL THEM.

nah, it's more like when you don't let your toddler nephew have something he wants and he threatens to throw the biggest tantrum ever and we'll all be sorry, and you're all like "fine, do it then" and then he throws the most ridiculously adorable temper tantrum ever and all you can do is stand there and try not to laugh or take a picture because even though he's flailing and screaming and giving it his all, IT'S JUST SO DAMN CUTE!!!! giggle

that's how i feel about it, anyway. redface

LMBO! I so agree with you Anx. You know you can't help but laugh and giggle and think "Now that's Prince." LMBO! "I love all y'all. Don't you ever mess with me again." This is the first chance I've had to listen to it. And I'm laughing so hard my kids are coming in and asking me what's so funny. How in the world do you explain something like this to a 6 year old and a 3 year old.

I love THIS MAN! (((((Prince))))) Go on with your bad self.

It sounds very much like two sessions spliced together. I wonder if the second half was done last night?

If he did do it all last night, then it just goes to show he makes much better music when he is angry. Thats whats been missing. When Doves Cry, Sign O The Times, Theives in the temple (12" version!). Anger brings out th best in him.

Lets stir it up more, we might get a whole album of this! biggrin

How do you come back from the kind of anger that has been shown on the site, though. People have expressed what seems to me like real hatred - I think there are very few things he hasn't been called now, people saying they would bitch-slap him if they saw him in the street - shit like that. If everything turns out well how do you get pass feeling like that?

If he is an adult and handles this like an adult and puts that stupid web sherriff in it's place and makes clear he is after legitimate grivences I think most of us would have no problem dropping our arms. The whole problem in all this is that he has an established history of hurting his fans. There is no question that the bootleggers are legitimate targets but there were people who had lyric sites and other sites with pictures and stuff and not one single dime was made from them.

They were resources and a valued part of our community and something like the dttlyrics site got caught up in his madness. As if anyone on the planet is going to think the dttlyrics site tried to claim credit for the lyrics they were posting. Any sane rational person could see it for what it was, a fansite with lyrics to the songs that were the soundtrack to most of our lives. Someone like Ben does this for free and we have been all brought together because of Prince's music and to reflect back on how so many innocent people were wronged by Prince, it didn't really take much to bring back anger over that.

Personally I was sickened he was going for round 2 when he should have learned his lesson the first time. Back then we were all separate islands and pretty disjointed. Now we are together and focused and I do believe it is that that helped to get "negotiations" on track and that had this been 97, he would have succeeded in shutting the org and the other sites down. so if this was all a misunderstading and web sherriff is truly at the heart of this, bygones can be bygones but Prince better watch his ps and qs in the future man.

Seriously. lol

I think he's a lunatic legally. I think he's WRONG and I'm glad that PFU is standing up and saying something about free speech. It's crucially important to me. So, keep up the good work! At the same time, I think the song is a genius response. He's a musician, and he's responding musically. He thinks he's right (like always), so... the legal battle will go on. I'm glad at least that he's making GOOD music out of it... just like I'm glad folks are standing up for free speech. I have to admit: personally, I'm winning. Free speech AND good music. Fans keep pushing!

I know I'm a day late and a dollar short in my response, but I just heard the song and had to throw in my two cents.

"Could you mix me up a metaphor and put it on the rocks, Crustle?"
"Sure thing!"

Love to everyone.
