To young females, "Barbie" reflected the ideal of what "beauty and the shape of a woman should be like" at least that's the false image the modeling industry projected to these girls. Unfortunately, that led to many young females desiring for that "very thin" look, and that desire/pressure did lead and still leads to a high increase in anoxeria/bulemia/addiction to diet pills/other drugs to stay thin, etc., among young females and models. Young girls see those images in magazines everyday, basically telling them "this is what you should look like." Since then, they changed the look of Barb a bit, not much, but better than years ago, and there's also been some pressure for models to go from bone thin to look more "female" instead of an underdeveloped young boy's body. But the desire for that "very thin look like a model" or seeing a model as a "role model" still has an effect on many young girls/women today trying to get into the modeling industry or basically just desiring to look and be shaped like what the modeling industry says the "ideal female" should look like..but Barbie's boyfriend, the "Ken doll" pretty much kept low-keyed in all this..'cuz no one ever complained about his looks or bodyweight.. what can I say..it's still a man's world in the modeling industry which seems to dictate what the ideal female should look like...and that's just my take on it. I still love the video though and the message the song transcends. [Edited 10/28/07 18:49pm] Excellent read Always loved the song and the video tops it off nicely Thanks, appreciate it. I like the song and video too. I have a feeling it will make it's way on one of the tv stations soon, despite some of the criticism here. [Edited 10/29/07 16:23pm]

I swear to God I keep reading this thread, and going back to the video, wondering what I am doing wrong not to hate this as much as this thread suggests that I should.
It is not the most absolute fascinating piece of music video artistry that I have ever witnessed, but if I hadn't watched it I would think it was on the level of The Holy River, Betcha By Golly Wow, or Come On. Most of the criticism is completely over the top, which once again proves the point that the internet gives a voice to a lot of people who probably shouldn't have one. Why shouldn't we voice our opinion? We have the right to say what we think too, don't we? We didn't sign a gag order, saying that we that we can't express our opinions for not liking one of Prince's videos, or that we have to like every video Prince puts out. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Sure, anyone can voice their opinion, which is precisely what I was doing by criticising the opinions of those who voiced their displeasure with the video. He is exactly who we thought he was

in my opinion...the video is average at best...that being said, I think the video is better than the song...I certainly don't think it's as terrible as some here do, but I can understand the disappointment...I wish he would get away from the horns and the psuedo r&b/pop stuff for a lil' while...I always envisioned Princes music becoming more experimental than what it has...seems like all the songs lately are of the same mold...and this video fits that same dull mold...just my opinion...

The audience didn't know what all that shit was about (from what I remember). While I think it's kinda cute in general I'm not so sure the idea carries enough weight to be THE point of a music video, but the sitting down/playing it cool thing doesn't bother me when I remember the context of the event @ hand
It was the Matthew Williamson fashion show, you see him at the start of the video..maybe only people from the UK will know who he is?

this video is cool, it continues his exploration of mixing up his reality with the music/video/album process like he did with the 3121 album/parties.
it also throws a bit of convention and old school ideas of what his videos should be out the door. That's good. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

i liked the video- though it took a hell of a long time to finally load. very choppy and flashy- but that's to be expected since it was a fashion show. i think he was trying to mimic the fast pace of fashion and the media with the choppy segways. i don't think i'd call it a music video however- its more of an audio/visual scrapbook of the fashion show and Prince's performance. it was really great- it matches the beat of the song. Overall 4.5 out of 5. But when did Chelsea go on the stage? I never saw her actually walk up there like Prince did, but all of a sudden she was dancing with the Twinz on stage and later on with Shelby. Must be video magic. nice video.
very pretty girl. who is the girl with the big 'fro? She is pretty too. I think this will get some air play on VH1 if for no other reason than the fact that it is a fashion show setting. I like the concept. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

It strikes me that the video is okay...it's just 20 years too late. This video would've been perfect for High Fashion -- not Chelsea Rodgers! Oooh...good call--I could totally envision that.

YEP!! She looks like she could be a Sheila E/ Prince colabo to me LOL....although I have heard people say that she is hella tall and they could not be her parents because of that....I don't know... can height skip a generation??? Hated this for 2 reasons.
1. It's obviously lip-synched/mimed and Prince is trying to play it off like it's live (or so it seems) 2. I went to Jam of the Week on 3121, and got a video for a song I've heard 600 times..... Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Like this lady? Prince has an "Ooooh shit!" look on his face. That is her, how f*&$^ing annoying is that! Does she think Prince would lay her right there in the middle of a concert? Some people just do not have commmon sense!

See, the guy can't take negativity. He's got a little problem with that. One thing is for certain when you listen to Prince music or watch his videos -- Prince may have talent, but his ability to create music or put on a good performance is long, long, long gone. Even watching the 2 DVDs from the London shows... wow. Pitiful. Where's Wendy and Lisa when you need them? I think it's time for Prince to retire. I'm sure Prince is not too happy reading these comments at all, but this is Prince.org. We're not afraid to say what we think on here, good or bad. I was thinking about that, alot of haters here on a site that is supposed to be his fansite. Some of their comments are really hurtful. I hope he understands that the most of us really love him and his work.

Prince is apparently an excellent basketball player, no? Heehee! Just kidding - haha! or maybe not! ...but you never know... I read he is pretty good at basketball and would have taken it up professionally if it was not for his love for music and another factor.

Lame. And Prince, get a tan for the love of god, I mean, Jehovah. You're almost as white as, dare I say, Mr Jackson. Not sure about the Wonka top hat either. CR is stunning though.

The twinz just suck. Chelsea....ok....go make some t-shrits...please. I would have been happy with just the band and Shelby. who is the chick in the fro...she was the coolest person in the entire video. I'm sayin! That's Marva King. I'm in love with her afro. I want one...too bad I have white girl hair. surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

I can't believe some of the nasty comments on this thread. I feel really sorry for Prince. It states on his website that it's a video 'CLIP' (Jam of the week) and was all done in one take at the show. I think it's great, it was a surprise, it was something different and it's FUN. LIGHTEN UP people!! Go 'head Prince!

Well I liked the video. On 3121 it says it was shot in one, it was just the opening for the fashion show really, maybe as a thank you to the designer for clothes for the concert? The only thing that spoils it for me is Chelsey Rodgers herself - she looks kinda bored! Anyway I think the song is fun and funky. Marva (?spelling) and Shelby are great too of course, as is the rest of the band.
Thanks prince I thought the concerts were just fantastic - come back soon.... [Edited 10/30/07 4:59am] U know there ain't no other
