It seems to me that Prince doesn't want people, especially new fans, to buy his albums. I can understand not wanting people to see your old videos because they go against your new religion, but alot of his old and newer videos have no bad temptations or themes in them. Why is he keeping people from seeing those videos? Isn't the whole point of music videos to try to sell albums? Lots of artists would kill to have their videos seen more, whether it be mtv, vh1, or online. Prince making it hard to see his videos is just hurting his album sales.

He had a lot of his older "unobjectionable" videos set up at the club, hopefully he'll do something like that again.

He must have a plan like that in mind... surely! hmmm

Yes, you really are.

You forgot to remember that when you were alive a million years ago, you would periodically cut out the pictures from those magazines. Sometimes you would color these pictures in, or write something on top of them. You would then fold them up creatively and use them as coverart for a tape you made of your favorite tracks.
You would then take this tape to school, and give it to a girl you liked. You used to be overrun with joy if she liked the tape, which motivated you to make more.

This is exactly what Youtube is and how it works.
But I dunno, perhaps you were never really alive. Or maybe just bad memory.

Fact of the matter is. Where there's a will, there's a way.
That's xactly what God gave us all. Free will.
Prince will turn out 2 b the real man who sued God. (or whatever he wants 2 call him)

There is a not-so-small difference, illustrated by the following news excerpt (copied from Slashdot, referring to the New-York Times):

"In the annals of perks enjoyed by America's corporate executives, the founders of Google may have set a new standard: an uncrowded, federally managed runway for their private jet that is only a few minutes' drive from their offices. For $1.3 million a year, Larry Page and Sergey Brin get to park their customized wide-body Boeing 767-200, as well as two other jets used by top Google executives, on Moffett Field, an airport run by NASA that is generally closed to private aircraft."

Am I missing something? If so, educate me.

Maybe it’s my age. I’m almost 40. Have been a Prince fan since 1982.

Back when I was a kid, if you created something (for example, let’s say you wrote a story) and sold it to a magazine, the magazine paid you and distributed it. The story had a copyright so no other magazine could take that story, copy it, publish it in their magazine and not pay the author.

Artists need to get paid for their work. It’s that simple. Whether the artist is a writer, painter, musician, poet, sculptor, software designer, etc.

I realize the internet is a great vehicle for distribution and promotion. But taking pieces (stories, songs, videos, films, software, etc.) and putting them online without paying the artist is stealing. Period.

Are any of you creative? Would you like to sell your creative output and earn a living as an artist? How would you respond if something you created was replicated and distributed in a worldwide forum without your authorization? And without you getting paid for the time, effort and resources you put into creating it? Anybody want to work for free? Anybody not mind being exploited?

And to say, "Well, it’s impossible to close every file sharing/video swapping site, so why bother?" is like saying, "There’s always crime. We can never eliminate it, so why have the police?"

Am I missing something here? Seriously?

You know - I am in total support of an Artist. I do not wish to take anything from anyone. But this is not a question of art per se. A music video is generally created to promote a song or album it is related to. Meaning it is meant to sell - like a commercial advertises it's product. Please note that not only were we as ans able to see old ass Prince videos we were alos able to see newer performaces - Like Prince playing at the Webby Awards, Prince playing at the Rock in Roll Induction Ceremony. All of those performaces were meant to be seen. I do not deny Prince's right to "get paid" but this is not the real issue for him. Prince is trying to prevent people doing things without his approval. As I said in my previous post Prince also sued people from making sites devoted to him. Is that not the same thing, preventing someone to express themselves creatively? And as a reminder for those of you that weren't around in 1985 - when Prince decided to retire and "...look for the ladder." (that was his quote) A pasta company came out with one of the most clever commercial - the commercial the gave the impression that you could still see Prince in concert - using camera angles without ever showing the actual performer, so as you watched it you thought "Omigod!...Prince is back in concert!" Then the voice over...NO! Not that Prince...PRINCE SPAGETTI!!! It was so cool, smart etc. What did Prince do? He sued ofcourse. SO in closing - I agree with what you state about an Artists rights but this is Prince being who he really is - A self absorb wuss. Nothing more.

I got the bit about the tape and the girl (altho she didn't like my tape).
But the bit about that being exactly like uploading a file to distribution server accessible to millions, well that'd be like takin' acid b4 giving the tape to the girl.
wink

No you're not missing anything on the general issue (as far as any artist is concerned on a rights basis).
But there's a back-story of Prince being or appearing to be duplicitous in his arrangements with 'fan organisations' of one kind and another.
It's a can of worms alright and at least explains just how some people are SO pissed off with the object of their interest.

Until this back-story is known to you in its fullness, it is, granted, fairly impossible to see the missing bits that explain the anger and hatred felt by...erm...fans (I'm not being funny).

The only thing that interests me is some kind of resolution. The fans concerned say that although there have been periods when things have been bygone and moved on, there have been repeat offences which have sent them through phases of disillusionment and, more lately, an absolute refusal to take it lying down.

It's a 'Call in Kofi Anan' situation.

Having dug the fan-sites' recorded history of these 'arrangements' and 'cancellations of arrangements', I can dig where they're at and appreciate the construction of their reaction. Against that, there needs to be a dynamic response strategy rather than a static 'We shall not be moved'

On the Prince side, I can dig the indignation concerning infractions on his joints BUT there needs to be a getting down to dealing with past mistakes which are clearly not being forgotten and are therefore present mistakes.

Last night in a dream I was surfing two websites 'Love 4 one another' and 'Hate 4 one another'
In the first, members restricted themselves (to practice restricting themselves, a forgotten useful skill) to appreciation, ideas, suggestions, fun and games and on the other one grieviances, demands and viciousness were bared in detail.
Both parties were involved in both sites and there was a third site releasing stuff.

When I woke up, I had my usual cereal and decided there are a lot less problems on The White Stripes' sites
See you there!

This just in - Prince is being sued!!!

That's right by MGM/UA. Apparently, Prince did not pay the copyright fee for sampling "Oh We OH...OHHHH. Oh We Oh...OHHHH oh." Which was originally performed and recorded by the famous group the munchkins for the 1939 film the Wizard of Oz. This copyrighted sample was incorporated by Prince in the 1987 release Sign 'o' the Times song Gonna b A beautiful Night. Prince camp states that the statue of limitations had expired. But spokeperson for the film company now know as MGM/UA/Columbia TriStar states that Prince is wrong the statue of limitations is 50 years. The song was originally recorded in 1939 and Prince's use of the song was recorded in 1987, A difference of 48 years. It is most obvious that Prince has no regard for copyrights. A person from MGM/UA/Columbia TriStar who wished to remain anominous stated. Prince Attorney repsone was,"...No big deal...Just round down. No I mean up, ROUND UP just round the number up. That's what I said." We'll keep you posted as this story develops.

Okay now I can really speak on something - I have been a Prince fan for quite a long time. I have supported so many aspects of his music, his character defending him against all types of attacks...gay, clothing...name change etc. I have traveled to other states to see him perform. I have been there for the Man PERIOD. I can never experience things such as Prince a Celebration or The Las Vegas thing because by the time you plan to go the "Artist" ups and says "Hey I'm done with this." I recall sometime ago when so many fans had designed websites devoted to him. It was cool seeing people taking their artistic talent and create digital art all in the name of the great Prince....What did he do...threaten everyone to close the sites.

My only saving grace was being able to see a video of Prince courtesy of Youtube. It has been cool to be able to watch Controversy again, the long version of A-U-T-omatic, When doves cry etc. The fact that I have been a fan purchased every damn release from paisley park (Yes I had a copy of good question and Dale Bozzio riot in English). Every issue of every periodical whose cover he's graced. I can't watch a simple video once in awhile. You know I am DONE - this is the kind of BULLSHIT that all of his former associates talk about. Mr. Control freak!!!

In the open he wants to smell like roses but behind closed doors he's a LITTLE dictator. What's he gonna do next, sue fans for wearing Purple. WTF - fucking control freaken bastard. The last cd I purchased was 3121 - and GUESS WHAT PRINCE - I bought it used. That's right!!!! USED!!! I haven't even purchased Planet Earth - If my state is BLESSED for you to come and perform I will be one person who won't be there. I am sick of your selfish ways and your twisted fashion in which you deny fans the opportunity to support you. I AM DONE with supporting your art. We as fans made you a star. We did!!! Your fans have carried you through every slump in your creative career, even when you couldn’t fill a skating rink – (Do you remember when you opened for the Rolling Stones and you were pelted with raw chicken parts) we still supported you. Buying crap like chaos and disorder, New Power Soul, cheap fabric parkas (from your now defunct clothing line) that couldn't keep you warm in the summer. Getting burned by your direct mailing for crystal ball (think back people when you waited for months to get the cd). What are you gonna do...open a web site and charge us to watch you dance around in late 70's shorts and leg warmers with silver boots? SO sad that God (yes God) would have so much talent wrapped up in an ass. I will no loner support a contradiction.

bow

Couldn't fill a skating rink! Classic!
