That's right by MGM/UA. Apparently, Prince did not pay the copyright fee for sampling "Oh We OH...OHHHH. Oh We Oh...OHHHH oh." Which was originally performed and recorded by the famous group the munchkins for the 1939 film the Wizard of Oz. This copyrighted sample was incorporated by Prince in the 1987 release Sign 'o' the Times song Gonna b A beautiful Night. Prince camp states that the statue of limitations had expired. But spokeperson for the film company now know as MGM/UA/Columbia TriStar states that Prince is wrong the statue of limitations is 50 years. The song was originally recorded in 1939 and Prince's use of the song was recorded in 1987, A difference of 48 years. It is most obvious that Prince has no regard for copyrights. A person from MGM/UA/Columbia TriStar who wished to remain anominous stated. Prince Attorney repsone was,"...No big deal...Just round down. No I mean up, ROUND UP just round the number up. That's what I said." We'll keep you posted as this story develops.

No, really, check it out:

Prince it most likely One of SEVERAL Artists lending their "name" to this battle.

Let me clarify something - Prince will sue with the change of the weather PERIOD. As I noted in my previous post. He sued over a commercial, he sued all of his fans that designed websites. So this is nothing new - you can wrap it any way you wish He (Prince) is a self absorb wuss. Who cares about nothing but himself.

I am researching this as I type. For some strange reason they didn't have internet links back in cica 1939. But the acapella group The Munchkins, do have a website. http://www.ozclub.org/ref...mmunch.asp that may be of some help.

I Dont agree with Prince on this subject.

But you guys need to come down. This is how someone like John Lennon gets shot.

Fans have to realize, they dont matter. It doesn't matter if you bought all his albums (your just one of millions who've done that) It does matter you got on an plane to see him (your just one of thousands who've done that). He doesn't know your name, he doesn't know your face, he doesn't even know you exist. Dont take this type thing as a personal attack, as i feel many on here and housequake.com are taking it. Remeber he doesnt even know your alive. If you see him face to face. Your a stranger. He doesnt really love you. You write him a letter, your just words on a piece of paper. You dont have feelings you dont cry, you dont laugh, you don't exist.

Where just a bunch of people who enjoy music. Again i disagree with him on this matter, but that's it don't hate him, i don't feel disrespected for "all i've done" and "all the money i spent" i'm just in disagrement.

So calm down yal' damn!! lol

oh, stop.

Yes, you really are.

You forgot to remember that when you were alive a million years ago, you would periodically cut out the pictures from those magazines. Sometimes you would color these pictures in, or write something on top of them. You would then fold them up creatively and use them as coverart for a tape you made of your favorite tracks.
You would then take this tape to school, and give it to a girl you liked. You used to be overrun with joy if she liked the tape, which motivated you to make more.

This is exactly what Youtube is and how it works.
But I dunno, perhaps you were never really alive. Or maybe just bad memory.

STOP THE PRESSES - I cannot believe that you said Prince is wrong. The world will stop and the time continuum will cease. Saying that he is wrong is blasphemy - like saying no to an ape (Planet of the Ape series Battle for the Planet of the Apes fifth and final film in the series). Be very careful.

This is just a difference of opinion. It’s no big deal at all (unless you’re being sued and can’t afford a lawyer).

There’s absolutely nothing to get angry about here (at least not for more than a couple minutes of pure fun.)

I couldn’t stomach someone who had the same exact opinions as me on every single issue. How am I supposed to learn in that environment?

Just as I hold a different opinion on some of these matters than does Prince, I still can respect him as a human being.

And just as I respect Prince, I respect the hell out of people on this site who are willing to stand up for a different viewpoint.

Making someone think is a good thing. Which is why I continue to read and learn.

Take it easy on each other. You’re better than that!

For someone who gave away his album for free in a newspaper as a promotional tool - the only possible reason all this fuss is about is because he is going to release/sell DVD's of the concerts and I sincerely hope he does - man i would LOVE to get a copy of Thursday nights concert - the vibe was too funky!

There is a not-so-small difference, illustrated by the following news excerpt (copied from Slashdot, referring to the New-York Times):

"In the annals of perks enjoyed by America's corporate executives, the founders of Google may have set a new standard: an uncrowded, federally managed runway for their private jet that is only a few minutes' drive from their offices. For $1.3 million a year, Larry Page and Sergey Brin get to park their customized wide-body Boeing 767-200, as well as two other jets used by top Google executives, on Moffett Field, an airport run by NASA that is generally closed to private aircraft."

Damn those people with money!

Funny thing tho is that both Google and Youtube are completely free for its users. Youtube has never made a dime, and Google is a crazy moneymaker thanks to non-intrusive adds. So where is the problem in all of this.

YOUTUBE IS A CORPORATION MAKING AD REVENUE OFF OF UPLOADED CONTENT.
WHY DO YOU INSIST THAT IT IS A GOOD IDEA FOR DUMB@SS USERS TO MAKE FREE MONEY FOR THE OWNERS AT PRINCES COST?

YouTube is a corporation NOW, because someone thought up a need that wasn't being met on the internet and provided it. It got popular and then a bigger corporation came along and purchased it and figured out a way to make money off of it. Ditto with Myspace. The problem with viewing YouTube and Myspace as "evil corporations" is you're forgetting the MILLIONS of regular people/fans that use these sites as part of their daily lives. NOT for profit, just to keep in touch with each other. It's what the internet was INVENTED FOR. To make the world a little bit smaller. So places like THIS can exist and people from ALL OVER THE WORLD can interact with each other. So ultimately that's what YouTube and Myspace are.

IT'S HIS ART TO MAKE $$ OFF OF AND FOR HIM TO DECIDE WHO HE WISHES TO SHARE $$ WITH.

Sure, it is. But he can't micro-manage EVERY aspect of it. Again, if he thinks he can, or it bothers him that much when he can't, then as you put it "he should shut that shizznit down". (people still say "shizznit"?)

BY UPLOADING HIS SHIZZNIT YOU ARE F_CKING HIM IN THE @ZZ...AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY..

Whatever. I'm sure Prince wastes more money on high-heel shoes than is being "lost" on YouTube.

IT IS IRRELEVANT WHETHER HE DOES OR DOES NOT WANT HIS OLD MUSIC "OUT THERE"..
THE BOTTOM LINE IS YOUTUBE DIDN'T ASK OR PAY ROYALTIES

The point is it's the internet. You can try and apply 20th century business models to it, and it doesn't apply. He's NOT going to get royalties on EVERYTHING. HE'S NOT GETTING ROYALTIES ON EVERYTHING NOW!!!!! There are BARS & CLUBS all over the country that are playing his shit. There are HUNDREDS of podcasts on the internet NOW that he's not getting paid from. Now, he can try. But he will FAIL. And in the long run, in trying all he's going to do is PISS OFF MORE FANS. Someone in an earlier thread equated YouTube to how we used to trade tapes and magazines and videos back in the day, and i thought that was a spot on analogy.

YOU ARE GIVING PAGE VIEWS TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T GIVE A FLYING F_CK ABOUT ART.

No, fans are watching videos and having a good time doing so. No one's thinking about "page views" but Prince and YouTube. The fans could give a flying, well you said it.

FU_KIN KNUCKLEHEADED FANS THINK THEY ARE HELPING PROMOTE

well, without them someone (coughpurplemidgetcough) couldn't afford to have all of their clothes custom made. so yeah, i kinda think they are helping. and in a lot of cases have better ideas on how to promote him than he does.

if you really dig the purple ones groove [regardless of whether he can be a dick or in a mode you ain't vibing with] this is NOT cool.

and that's what separates the purple kool-aid drinking prince-bots from fans. i can like some/most of his music without thinking that everything he does is great or agreeing with every dumb decision he may make. coughgraffitibridgethemoviecough. (damn me and my scratchy throat)

Other people are probably in a better position to elaborate, but there is a reason this site looks like it does, void of any Prince imagery.
The org exists by simply giving in to pretty much any request from the Prince camp, HQ exists because they invest in legal assistance.

Let me clarify.

WHEN Prince has a website, "Famtube" or "O(+>tube" or some other lame ass thing he'd want to call it, and it has access to EVERYTHING, THEN he can sue. He shouldn't sue someone for providing a service THAT YOU AREN'T WILLING TO PROVIDE YOURSELF.

When he does that, and if the purple kool-aid kids want to pay some MONTHLY FEE to have unfettered access to everything (and i mean everything), then sure go ahead and sue anyone that's taking "some money" out of your ALREADY RIDICULOUSLY LARGE POCKETS.

BUT, until that day happens he shouldn't be going after ANYONE.

If a fan in IDAHO has the Madhouse video, why can't he put it on Youtube IF Prince isn't providing it?

If Suzy in Podunk, Illinois has the "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" footage from American Bandstand, and she wants to share it with other fans WHY CAN'T SHE?

We're not talking about BOOTLEGGERS, we're talking about FANS. Which is ALL Youtube is. Don't get me wrong, i hate how networks like NBC are all over Youtube suing to take down footage either but will look the other way when it serves their purpose. When "Dick In A Box" was all over Youtube BEFORE NBC had it and it was the most popular thing on the internet, it was great. RIGHT up until, well now we have it so TAKE IT DOWN. Which was shady, but fine. AT LEAST there was some other place to see it.

My friend, sites like you tube and the like, P2P programs etc r not providing a community 'service'. They r not charity organisations per say, and even suggesting that is an insult, bcause @ least most charities and legitimate service providers make sure copyright owners r factored in2 their equations.
Ultimately, somehow, they profit from works they have no legal right to.

That's the basis OF THE ENTIRE INTERNET. People are linking to and trading information. Smart business people (Myspace, Youtube, Google, etc) figure out a way to provide a service that isn't being met and make some money (but USUALLY don't start out that way).

This is where the hypocrisy of some artists like Prince, bothers me. If it were his Super Bowl performance that was the #1 video on Youtube and it translated to album sales, he would sure as hell look the other way for a week or 2. If he were starting his career today, he'd LOVE the exposure and the fact that people were talking about him.

That's where artists like Prince, Metallica, lose fans when they get big. Become at some point it becomes ALL ABOUT THE BUSINESS, when it's not about that for the fans. People aren't putting stuff up on Youtube to make money, they are FANS who want to share their love of an artist WITH OTHER FANS. Youtube is just providing the venue, because they came up with it. Why doesn't Prince just SUE THE INTERNET then? Because if Youtube gets shut down over something like this, people will just go somewhere else. It's only when sites like Myspace and Youtube get popular enough, do greedy ass artists see an opportunity to try and squeeze some more dollars out of someone else to put in their pockets.

Co-sign. I love Prince, but u are so right! It's free exposure and I can't understand why he can't see this.
Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. That's where the party be, 3121. Y'all can come if u want to, but u can never leave!

So calm down yal' damn!! lol

clapping This is EXACTLY how I feel on this issue. Nothing left for me to say.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

i kinda agree with prince

on one hand youtube allows people to post racist videos and disgusting stuff,

yet when it comes to copyright don't give a damn

youtube is a breeding ground for troublemakers.

the internet itself is a breeding ground for troublemakers. So what? I go to Youtube to watch classic tv clips from years past, and videogame videos of the past. You must be looking for trouble to actually find it on Youtube.

wow, you just made me think of the irony of an artist who has made a habit of "borrowing" friend's sounds for his own suing his fans for "sharing" his. lol

Prince fucked with the org plenty of times in the past.
Other people are probably in a better position to elaborate, but there is a reason this site looks like it does, void of any Prince imagery.
The org exists by simply giving in to pretty much any request from the Prince camp, HQ exists because they invest in legal assistance.

so um....what do you call the org gallery? and i wasn't aware that HQ invested in legal council. From what I know they have always responded to p's legal requests...just like the org. However, P's camp has also provided HQ with official photos....it's not as black and white as you've stated.

I know it's not sosgemini, and my knowledge about these things is only anecdotal.
But I do know HQ have some type of legal assistance. They know exactly what their legal rights are, and will negotiate with Prince on a compromise, depending on what it is he wants at any given time. That is where those official pictures came from, they were part of a compromise to remove certain materials from the site.
