Whatever else is true (ie. whether he is doing the "right" thing as a business move, for his fans, etc), he is fighting a LOSING BATTLE. The net isn't gonna be controlled. Even if you're Prince and you think you rule the world. lol

He should be happy about internet piracy. What it means is that artists will have to go back to making money from touring, with recordings being mainly promotional tools. Real music, real musicians. cool
oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

I love how when shit goes down, Prince is always some uninformed 3rd party to the proceedings.

I want to thank Websheriff, for they are doing us a huge favor.
The funny thing is, Websheriff know all about how impossible it is to shut down a site liek piratebay, they have experience and gave up trying for some other clients in good humor (checkout thepiratebay.org/legal).
Yet, some clever dick convinced Prince to sink money and credibility into trying to shut down thepiratebay. I don't say this often, but : LOLOLOLOLOLOL

So here is where we owe Websheriff a thankyou note : after these latest legal efforts fail in a semi high profile manner, how will people and press respond if he decides to go after the HQs of this world once more.
Prince cannot ever go after us fans again, and maintain any type of credibility at the same time.
So thankyou Sheriff, well done!

Hi all,

I have a question. I watched the Prince Larry King interview on youtube biggrin and even Prince said that Warners owns the masters to all of the music up to before his contract ended. Doesnt that void this whole issue? Shouldnt Warner Brothers be suing?

If the videos were released through Warner Music Group he doesnt have a leg to stand on in the suit. Right or wrong?

Prince is brilliant. He has been at the cutting edge of online music distribution and websites, so it only makes sense that he would step up and try to get a handle on the piracy that has gone wild online. Someone has to take the first step and Prince is making a bold move. He has worked hard and deserves to have some sense of where all his work is being reproduced.

We are stepping into new territory with the online piracy, and eventually there will be parameters and guidelines to protect artists. For now Prince will have to make the first move. A very smart move. He wants control of his music and videos. Very smart.

The music industry has to catch up to the internet eventually. Prince will set the standard for others to follow.

That's one way of looking at it.
I look at it like this.
Prince is a greedy control freak.

We're not talking about "online piracy".
That implies that all these people are SELLING AND MAKING A PROFIT off of Prince material.

We're talking about fans SHARING FOOTAGE with OTHER FANS. FOR FREE.

If you want to turn this into a debate on the internet, sure.
AGAIN, for the millionth time, the only way this makes SOME sense is if he's selling content online and then finding it somewhere else on the net for free. In that case, go ahead and sue.

That's NOT what he's doing.

What you don't seem to understand is that he is smarter than you.

First step? Yeah, no-one has tried to tackle internet piracy before now. What a revolutionary Prince is.

And anyway he isn't going after piracy.

He does not get it and he will lose.

To bad for him, he could embrace this and benefit from it. Not that he needs it.

This is why I miss NPGMC. You people bitch like there's no tomorrow. Get over it. He will do what he wants. He has a motive and he is not stupid. Not as much can be said for all the "music industry experts" in this thread.

Hi Mene1948,

I agree with you, but it is impossible to escape your past sometimes. I liked one era of Prince which was the Controversy/1999/Purple Rain era, and some people like other eras, Guitar and Thong LOL, Buttless pant, JW Evangelist, and on and on.

But trying to kill off the era that people like wont work. Because we have already seen it. And like it or not, people know what they want to see. Prince is just going to have to get used to what he created. Next thing you know, he will be going after Best Buy, and Amazon for selling Dirty Mind!! Where was all of the religion then?

I dont know

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Especially when you live your life in front of the cameras for the world to see. And i'm not so sure that it's as much him trying to "sanitize" his image (although i'm sure that's a part of it) as it is him trying to squeeze more dollars out of a couple of companies where he thinks he can get paid. If it were JUST the image thing, he would've gone after Myspace and YouTube when they were independently owned and on the come up. Only AFTER these companies got purchased by major corporations does he now want to go after them.

He may want to forget those days, and want all of us to but it's not going to happen. And beyond that, it's those things THAT MADE HIM RICH IN THE FIRST PLACE. If his old image is that much in conflict of his religion, then shave off the perm, move to Tibet and become the baddest guitar playing monk that ever lived.

That's his failing. You can't control the internet. You're better exploiting it for what you can. When will he learn that exposure of his material on these sites is a very cheap form of promotion. Don't want crappy copies of your videos on YouTube? Fine, well how about putting your money where your mouth is and putting a half-decent compilation out there. Or something more than the 2 videos we have on Uk iTunes. P, if you aint gonna provide it, we're going to go elsewhere. But hey, guess what? Doesn't stop us buying everything you put out. Go figure.

If he still wrote hits, I'd consider this latest act of tomfoolery career suicide. Piss off fans and no one buys your albums, Prince, which is why "Planet Earth" is a commerical failure.

Prince seeks to 'reclaim the net'

Prince is threatening to sue a raft of major websites, including YouTube, eBay and Pirate Bay, as part of a legal initiative to "reclaim the internet" from rampant piracy.
Lawsuits relating to Prince's material will be launched in the US and UK as part of a campaign led by anti-piracy firm Web Sheriff, which is representing the star.

The Web Sheriff managing director, John Giacobbi, said the extent of piracy online has become "ridiculous", spanning videos, music downloads, bootleg merchandise and unlicenced ringtones.

"99% of the stuff online is totally unauthorised," he told MediaGuardian.co.uk.

"Someone has to start somewhere and we know this will make a serious impact - a hell of a lot of artists are going to follow suit.

"We have to build a 21st century model for the entertainment industry."

Mr Giacobbi described YouTube, eBay and Pirate Bay as being in "the vanguard" of online piracy and said he hoped that once cases against those companies had been won, smaller sites would be more respectful.

In the past two weeks, Prince's legal representatives have requested the removal of around 2,000 illegally uploaded videos from YouTube.

Mr Giacobbi said the action was not intended to place blame on web users, but said artists should have the right to control their own work, where it is experienced and how their image is portrayed.

He questioned why YouTube was able to filter porn from the site, but not copyrighted material.

A spokeswoman for YouTube said the site "had no way of knowing" whether content had been uploaded legitimately or not.

Many artists upload their own material to YouTube, and on some occasions, she added, one part of a company had requested the takedown of material uploaded by another division.

The spokeswoman said the company will be introducing video fingerprinting technology that will scan videos for copyrighted material as they are uploaded, and will work with rights owners to build a database of such footage.

Prince joins a queue of media entities planning to sue YouTube. In March, MTV owner Viacom announced a $1bn copyright infringement suit against the site, and in May the English Premier League said it would also sue.

Mr Giacobbi described Prince as being a "radical and pioneering" artist, citing his spat with Warner in the early 90s when he changed his name to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince in order to regain control of his own rights.

Prince "wants to create a template for other artists", he added. "Prince doesn't really want to go around suing people - he'd much rather people just respected his rights. He will be victorious."

A spokeswoman for Anschutz Entertainment Group, Prince's tour management company, said the performer is ready to challenge the system. "Very few artists have ever taken this kind of action over their rights," she added.

I forgot to add this bit edit

Good on Prince for taking these people on.

but I think it will hurt him in the long run, as there will be no where to see his videos of songs unless he releases the lot on dvd/bluray/ vhs or betamax, and never let them go out of print, just look at Elvis hes still selling stuff by the van load and thats released stuff.

Prince to sue YouTube, eBay over music use

09/13/2007 5:39 PM, Reuters
Mike Collett-White

U.S. pop star Prince plans to sue YouTube and other major Web sites for unauthorized use of his music in a bid to "reclaim his art on the Internet."

The man behind hit songs "Purple Rain," "1999" and "When Doves Cry" said on Thursday that YouTube could not argue it had no control over which videos users posted on its site.

"YouTube ... are clearly able (to) filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success," a statement released on his behalf said.

YouTube responded by saying it was working with artists to help them manage their music on the site.

"Most content owners understand that we respect copyrights, we work every day to help them manage their content, and we are developing state-of-the-art tools to let them do that even better," said YouTube chief counsel Zahavah Levine.

"We have great partnerships with major music labels all over the world that understand the benefit of using YouTube as another way to communicate with their fans."

In addition to YouTube, Prince plans legal action against online auctioneer eBay and Pirate Bay, a site accused by Hollywood and the music industry as being a major source of music and film piracy.

The legal action is the latest bid by the music industry to wrest back control over content in an age where file sharing, mobile phones and video sites make enforcing copyright increasingly difficult.

But it is believed to be rare for an individual artist of Prince's stature to take on popular Web sites, while some up-and-coming performers actually encourage online file sharing to create a fan base and buzz around a record.

"Prince strongly believes artists as the creators and owners of their music need to reclaim their art," the statement added.

British company Web Sheriff has been hired to help coordinate the action.

"In the last couple of weeks we have directly removed approximately 2,000 Prince videos from YouTube," said Web Sheriff managing director John Giacobbi.

"The problem is that one can reduce it to zero and then the next day there will be 100 or 500 or whatever. This carries on ad nauseam at Prince's expense," he told Reuters.

He said his company had also removed around 300 items from eBay, where whole lines of pirated goods trading on Prince's name had appeared, including clocks, socks, mugs and key rings.

Prince's latest initiative is likely to please record industry executives and music retailers, who have not always seen eye-to-eye with the 49-year-old.

He has referred to the record industry as "the speculation business" and gave away copies of his new album "Planet Earth" for free with a British Sunday newspaper.

THAT one part of the article in bold is not true. YouTube has and still is yielding to the request of Viacom (ViaCON I call them!!!) to block out and/or remove all videos with the logos of MTV, VH-1, and BET.

he's happy to give away his music for free but disappoves of ebay and youtube? sometimes I just don't get this guy. Just when you think he's taking a step towards progression, he purposely jumps 4 steps back. This is the kind of shit that makes people stop being fans

I bet Prince didn't figure that to people who receive a free copy of Planet Earth are also the same people that would share it with everyone else with P2P.

Well you know what happens...you wake up, paint the word 'ART' on your cheek and when you're finished it reads 'RAT'

It's a crazy mixed up MF world, kids.

he hates you but he cant hate you because he loves you but he can't love you because he hates you. you hate him because you love him but you cant love him because you hate him

whatever, "Princespeak".
i don't buy stuff on Ebay, so i didn't realize that it had become a "haven of bootleggers".

on one hand, i guess it makes sense if brick and mortar stores can't sell bootlegs then they shouldn't be able to on Ebay.

on the other hand, how the hell is Ebay supposed to enforce that? Do they even have the staff to screen EVERY item that's for sale for whether or not it's "official"?

I'm done with him. I will never buy another cd, I'll burn copies going forward. I've seen him in concert enough, so I don't need to see the C+ version of him when I saw him at his prime. He can go sit in his mansion and continue to hate the people who basically paid for that house, his girls, his guys and everything else...

What you don't seem to understand is that he is smarter than you.

eek lol lol
