Until Ice Cream Castle, The Time(in the studio) consisted of Prince playing everything and singing backup) and Morris Day(Alex O'Neal to a lesser extent) on lead. Jesse played with a superb sounding guitar tone but his solo's lacked substance. He could play guitar, that is without question, but better than Prince.....wake the fuck up mang.

Again...who you think is better is a matter of opinion & personal taste. If your trying to represent your opinion as fact, then it's debatable. I'm not in the business of arguing opinions. You like who you like. This topic has been done to death. I was hoping to find some enlightened post. Unfotunately the usual group of greasy mouth fambots continue to leave post that don't offer any objectivity what so ever. (Prince is a god! "Nuff Said!") rolleyes

Prince is great no doubt. Maybe even a genius within his own microcosm. LOL! However, some of you need to collectively wean yourselves off his joint. Seriously. It's damn near impossible to have any sort of intelligent conversation with anyone riding his jock so hard.

Here's a tip: Pretend your not a fan for a moment then re-read some of your postings....perhaps for once you'd see how ridiculous some these statements are.

Well the first part of your statement is inaccurate in respect to the Time albums. Jesse's playing is clearly heard on Ice Cream Castles album and to a much greater degree on Pandemonium. Hmmm..so..what tracks did Prince play on those 2 albums? ...Right... The rest of the statement is highly debateable. It's not like this topic hasn't already been addressed in similar threads. Why dredge it up again for upteenth time?

Alexander O'Neal lead singer for THE TIME? What book or magazine did you quote this from? Morris was the lead singer of the Time from day 1. IMO, both P and Jesse are highly skilled in guitar playing. Who's better? Who cares..to each his own!!!

To a lesser extent, Alexander O'Neal? Uh, Alex NEVER sung lead with The Time. The only cut Jesse played on with The Time is Jungle Love. That's P on My Drawers.

You sure about that Black?

Jesse implies that the BB King style clean playing is his on "If The Kid Can't Make You Come" in the 1988 Guitar World article.

To be honest I've never heard Prince play anything remotely that bluesy on any of his studio albums, so I'm inclined to believe it not Prince. Compare what's on the track "Lonely Heart" (12 inch B side to "Everybody Dance") on Tamara & the Seen's 1st album or even "Better Way" from Shockadelica. You'll get a sense of what I'm getting at.

Isn't the "The Bird" taken from a live performance? The My Drawers solo...man your pullin' my leg right? LOL!

Good point, K. I always hated the track "If the Kid Can't Make U Come". And to be honest, I've NEVER listened to that song all the way through. I disliked it that much. Man, what a throwaway track. P is totally refering to his character's name from the Purple Rain film "The Kid". And then is going to try to toss it off on to Morris to sing. But yeah, it does sound more like Jesse than P. P's never gotten that blusey in his playing. Jesse's tone has always been more authentic when it came to a bluesy sound. His touch is more natural as well. Especially with that tone. The basic tracks to The Bird was live and yeah, that is Jesse on axe. BUT according to Morris, when I recorded with him, he said that My Drawers is ALL Prince.

I heard The Time's Pandemonium album for the first time yesterday. If it's Jesse playing on "Blondie" and "Skillet" : wow, what an amazing guitar player. I think he beats Prince on guitar. Without a doubt.

I think the person was talking about "Flyte Time" Alexander O'neal sang lead
and Morris played the drums. This was the name of the group before it was changed to "The Time" minus Alexander and Morris swithced to lead vocals.

As for Jesse., I saw perform live back 1987. He tore it up on the axe.
I remember him adding a guitar intro to "I Want My Girl" He should have re-recorded that song w/ the guitar intro, it gave the song a whole new vibe.

When he peformed "I'm just wanting you" the audience just stayed quiet and took in his awesome solos.

Well I'd like to believe Morris would have known who tracked what. What reason would he have to mis-inform form you. That wouldn't make a lot sense.

What I don't get is why Jesse would only track on select tunes. That is unless Prince had already recorded most of the guitar tracks. It would be interesting to hear Jesse's take on his time working for Prince. I get the impression from some of his statements since leaving the fold that he's moved on and rather speak more on his (then) current work.

On to another related topic what do you think he recorded with. The guitar tones are consistent through out the album. It's a very 80's tone. To me it sounds like a Rockman with a hint of chorus for the leads. Pretty much the same tone on "Jesse Johnson's Review" too.

P most definately cut several tracks waaay before there was any other involvement from other players. That was always the case. P only used another musician when he wanted something that he himself couldn't capture. The only reson Jesse got to do a solo was because Jungle Love was his song. And as I have mentioned several times on here in the past, the drama that went down regarding the solo, or lack of it, on Jungle Love is waaay out. P basically edited much of Jesse's lead work on that song. All of when Jesse wasn't present in the studio. Which caused much tension between P and Jesse. P always respected Jesse as a lead guitarist but there was always some envy there as well. Not just Jesse's playing but his image and 'coolness" that dictated somewhat of what P himself will later do. And Jesse was VERY popular with the girls. Something P had already had a problem with having Dez in the band. It wasn't as bad with Dez, since Dez was married. But Dez was the most sought out member by girls when they toured. And Jesse trumped Dez when The Time started to tour. All of that didn't sit well with P, who of course, wanted to be the only brother who got the attention from women.

Dealing with J.J.'s tone in the 80's, yeah, I would agree withcha that it was a very typical tone that he used. And a tone that I thought was "too safe". He didn't want to alienate the black audience with too much rock. So on his debut especially, his leads are buried somewhat in the mix. Which I hated. Having seen The Time perform 3 times BEFORE 84, I knew that Jesse was a monster on axe. I was let down heavily when his debut came out. I wanted Jesse to blow the doors off with his axe on his debut. That's one element where I favor P's lead work over Jesse's. Is the tone. P "sounded" waaay more rock with his leads. P was definately chasing the "vibe" of Hendrix and blending that with the more commercial stylings of Santana. P knew what he was doing and what worked as far as a "radio" guitar solo. Jesse wasn't hip to that at that stage. He just played. P 'wrote" solos that would work for the radio. Black or white.

I love P's axe..he just has a knack for choosing interesting chords and unexpected notes..but JJ's " I'm Just Wanting You"...and the double guitar effect...the org just gotta give props to that...

But the melody sounds exactly like Prince. What's with the copycating? The guitar chords in the song were similar to the Prince sound as well. The hair on the album cover even the blue suit was very Prince like. How can one try compare Jesse to Prince or state he was even better than Prince as a guitar player when all he did was copy Prince's style?

That's like Charlie Chaplin entering his own look alike contest and losing.

LOVE ME SOME JESSE AND HIS GUITAR PLAYIN' IS OF THE BEST OF THE BEST AND HE IS HUGELY UNDERRATED. However, I am convinced that our man Prince has transcended mere mortals on the axe. He is a guitar god no question about it. When he plays he becomes one with the guitar and he electrifies his audience.
This is a very hard question to answer as I don't like to pit them against eachother. Both their playin' stirs my soul.
