Rave Un2 The Joy Fantasic is a *good* album I cruised down to the O2 Arena this morning listening to the "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" album.
Man, I swear this album ain't as bad as the rep it gets. I'm really enjoying spinning it on repeat the last couple of days. Got to the O2 Arena car park for 1pm. I was the only one there. The car park guy could hear "Pretty Man" pumping out the MX5 speakers and knew the hardcore had arrived. Aiight!

IN2 is way better.
It has cult appeal, the Rave period. He's done worse.

Rave, like Emancipation, seems to suffer from being overhyped before it's release.
Before it's release, it was being touted as Prince's "Return to the top of the charts" and all that. Clive Davis was going to get Prince back on top 40, MTV, etc. Well, the promotion of the album was mangled--the 1st single was not the perfect song for radio and Prince quickly lost interest and blamed Clive Davis. Overall I think the album is good. It is interesting that albums released since "Prince's return to the main stream" like Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth are given a free pass-but similar pop records like Rave and Emancipation get hammered by fans--many of whom initially "loved" the albums. "New Power slide...."

I like Rave.
I don't LOVE Rave. But it's by far not a bad album.

It diminishes with every subsequent listen. It has its moments. The title track is outstanding. I also like "Man O'War" and "Hot Wit' U."
But it's spotty. "Sun, Moon and Stars" starts out great, but that rap at the end nearly ruins the song Tony M. style. "Pretty Man" is good, but Prince has done better songs in that style before and since. The end of the album just drags on. I believed the album was really good then. But, nearly a decade removed, I think it just has its good moments now. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I'm listening to it now, and so far, so pleased. As I look up at the sun, moon and stars and contemplate that everyday is a winding road, it is undisputed that we are all looking for the greatest romance that has ever been sold. I don't want to turn to the lover in my life and say, "Wherever you go, whatever you do, I love you but I don't trust you anymore." All I want us to ever say is, "I wanna get hot wit u." Love is a silly game, strange but true, and when the conversation gets as deep as the blue segue, we have to tread the leagues, stylishly in tangerine." Words exchanged can be like a "Man O'war" swimming by your feet, and you don't even know they are there. Baby knows when the water gets rough, we can't rock the boat, we gotta sail the Raves." I remember when it first came
out and I was much less of an insane drooling fam back then. I listened to it on headphones in the record store with a mate and we both thought it was an embarrassing attempt for an artist we really admired, at being "futuristic". I totally ignored Prince for a few years after that listen in the record store and only bought the album and its remix companion several years later after deciding I had to own everything he'd ever released. I still think it tries a bit too hard to be all things, though it does have some lovely MOMENTS.

Oh yeah, I forgot it contains that one. Serious contender for worst Prince song, in my book. The Vanity 6 remix didn't even help it.

His worst...
I hate its clumsy R&Bish production, the sappy ballads, the uninspired collaborations, and the album itself is TOO long...

It's as shit as fuck.
There's nothing on it to rediscover; it still remains a vapid collection of songs that wouldn't make it as B-Sides, even in an imaginary Prince hell. Rave In2 improved it, but not enough to make anything like approaching a 'good' Prince album.

I don't know, I like it too. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a good album, just an okay album that I happen to really like.
