I think fans either like the Old Prince or the New Prince music. Do Fans really enjoy his old and new music EQUALLY.

This seems to be impossible! But I could be wrong.

Yes, I certainly do! He is one of the few artists that I feel doesn't dull with age.

I like Old Prince and New Prince.... where I wavered slightly was "in betweeny" Prince, i.e. "Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic" and "Rainbow Children".... though as, strictyl speaking this represents less than 5% of his output and both of those albums are growing on me (slowly) I can't really count it.

So, that was a long and round-about way of saying "I really CAN like Both".

Proof? Try playing "Let's Go Crazy" then "Guitar". 23 years between them, both rock my world.

Of course i do, that's what i'm such a big fan! I mean think about it. This "old prince" sound is now some 17 year old. IMO the last time he had that "old sound" assuming where talking about the 80's style/Style he had w/ wendy and lisa etc was on Graffiti Bridge. Ever since Diamonds and Pearls he hasn't done that style. I think if your still a fan after 17 years, atleast big enough to be posting on this website. It's clear that you like both styles.

Let's see:

In 1985 "New Prince" was psychadelic and beatlesesque more worldy/earthy sound and old Prince was cold, funked out, MPLS sound without Wendy and Lisa.

In 1987 "new Prince" was a man without the Revolution "old Prince" was with Wendy and Lisa.

In 1990/91 "new Prince" mixed rap into his music and ditched his trademark synths.

In 1994 "New Prince" was and old Prince was "dead".

In 1996 "New Prince" was a man free of a record label and "old Prince" was tied to WB.

In 2000 "new Prince" was Prince again, a Jehovah's witness, and sans cussing. Old Prince was and prior.

In 2004 "New Prince" once again reached levels of mass popularity that "old Prince" had often enjoyed.

In 2007 "New Prince" gave away millions of copies of his new albums and pissed off recordlabels/retailers---a move very much like the "old ".

bottom line: why put Prince or time in a box. I love it all.

Do you think it is possible for people to expect Prince to be the same, to never evolve and never grow. Could it be possible that a dislike could grow because a style has changed?? I think this is often the case.

I like to listen to each new album with an open mind, I never expect any two albums to be the same. I wonder if expecting something and getting something different could lead to an album seeming bland or not to the same standard as other albums.

I listen to his old songs and new songs often and Prince is like fine wine... matures with age. He is exceptionally talented when he was young and his talent gets better with age. I love him he is

At which point in time (or album) do you consider "New Prince" to have come in to existence? There are some who would consider Purple Rain a turning point, others might consider the 0(+> period, or his conversion to the Jehovah's Witness faith.

His style has been constantly evolving for the past 30 years, which is part of why I enjoy his music so much.

We are treated to many different styles and changes in direction, to the extent that there can not be such a thing as "New" and "Old" Prince - only "Current".

I've loaded ALL of his albums onto my iPod. I usually listen to them on shuffle, so to me there is no "old Prince" or "new Prince". There is just .
I did, however, separate the slow songs and create a playlist called "Slo-Prince".

EVEN when he is producing "R&B" type music it really does not sound like the current R&B that is out. In fact his pop hits of the 80's never sounded like the "other" pop hits by artists during that time. His modern "pop" songs are different as well.

"Cinnimon Girl", "Guitar", "So Far So Pleased", "She Loves Me 4 Me", "Black Sweat", "Te Amo Croazon", "The One U Wanna C", "The Holy River", "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "Dolphin", "Dinner With Delorous", "319", "Get Off", "7", "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold", "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed", "Future Baby Moma" and "The Work" are just but a few EXCELLENT songs from the 90's and 2000's that Excell what has been out on the radio during these past 2 decades. Those songs sound NOTHING like his contemporaies. They are Original in nature and really can't be labled into 1 specific category simply becuase of the fact they all have flavors or elements of rock, pop, r&b and dance BUT are not "machined/factory made cookie cutter" type music.

PRINCE can not be touched!

So as far as liking his "old" stuff versus his "new" stuff...PRINCE hasan exceptional cataloug of music that is timeless and superior than most popular music.

Prince is changing, growing...evolving. I ALWAYS LOVE to hear a new Prince album for the simple fact that it's always gonna be fun!

It seems like on this board sometimes if you love a new Prince album, you're biased -- and if you hate it, you're bitter. I think this question arises from that.

I am a Prince fan for life; nothing can ever change that. But that doesn't mean I put on aural blinders every time he puts out a new album. I can't listen to "The Rainbow Children" -- but "Musicology" and "3121" are fantastic. That said, I've already phased out "Planet Earth" from my rotation (blame Common and Amy Winehouse for that -- instant classics).

I guess if you split Prince's career in half and told me I could either have the first or the second half it wouldn't be close.

Prince has lasted far longer and with more relevance than any artist of his era. He is the most influential artist maybe of all-time. But he's not on that level anymore -- and that isn't a bad thing.

So far Prince's peak as an artist appears to be between the years 1980 and 1988.

But this guy has produced a lot of great music and great albums outside of this simply defined creative peak.

I suspect that a lot of people (including music historians) will realize this as they are combing through the remains of his non-80's material.

Your ass is going to getting burnt if you treat him like a typical aging artist.

I think he's much more of a Duke Ellington than he is a Michael Jackson, or even a Stevie Wonder.

He'll be writing good stuff and bad stuff and great stuff until he's 70.

I like whatever I damn well want to like. I like certain songs from all his career and i cant wait to see what this cat does next.
