BBC website reporting on the whole London aftershow tickets fiasco... and the Org gets a mention:

Why does Prince pulling a bait & switch still surprise anyone? Come on, folks, it's not like there haven't been a good 10-15 years of examples not to trust him.

I don't think any fan would ever have "expected" an aftershow or considered complaining etc if not for the fact that the arrangements were all so formalized this time around, with money changing hands etc. The simple fact is, every Prince fan knows Prince's aftershow performances are awesome. So when Ticketmaster started selling tickets to something called "Prince - the Official Aftershow at Indigo2" (without any indication or warning that no performance was guaranteed - the warnings arrived later) it is hardly surprising that we all reached in our pockets to buy tickets.

It's unfortunate, and it isn't clear where the fault lies. What could have been handled better though, is the response to the fuckup. Realistically, no one expects Prince to play that many aftershow performances, but someone (ie. AEG and Ticketmaster) should have responded to the complaints. Charging people £25 - £75 for the dubious privilege of standing in a poncy bar for hours into the night is obviously taking the piss. IMO.

As for fans sounding like "spoiled brats"... frankly, unless you're rich enough that you wouldn't bend over to pick up £50 that you dropped on the ground, I don't blame anyone for complaining.

It could just be me but this article makes P fans sound like spoiled brats. Complaining and contacting ticketmaster for refunds because P doesn't show up to the afterparties. The thing is it is a bit confusing because if the tickets were promoted as "aftershows" then the people who bought tickets thought P would show up to Indigo to play. The mix up is in the wording. It should have been made clear from the onset whether these would be afterparties with unpredictable appearances or aftershows with guaranteed attendance of P and the band..

To allieviate these problems in the future, the tickeks should read:

This is the first time I can recall an article opening with a reference to Prince as a guitarist! I'd have to say this is BIG news and long past due. Wake up, Rolling Stone, the BBC just called Prince a GUITARIST. Maybe he'll squeak into your Top 100 next time 'round, eh?

Hmmm... I'm in two minds about the aftershows.

Yes, going to a bar and dancing the buzzed up energy off for hours, with the possibility of some musical surprises from Prince possibly turning up, I am ok with. I wonder if he assesses whether he will turn up or not by watching the crowd? If that's the case, I need to get my boyfriend to start limbering up his inner thigh tendens to do continual Prince splits to get his attention cool

On the other hand, I will defo feel cheated if Prince doesn't turn up. If he mills about in the crowd but doesn't play, then I'd be happy with that. But I think we all need to be realistic - no matter how much we dig what's going down without Prince being there, we turn up because we all HOPE he will. And I think most people will feel dissapointment to varying degrees if he doesn't show.
That's right, you are Divinity

If people really thought that Prince would perform 42 concerts and that such Aftershow performances were guranteed, when it was never stated or written anywhere that such appearances were guaranteed, then they are not only 'spoilt brats' but total fantasists.

If they want to complain about something they imagined and created in their own expectations and fuck-up Prince's stay and the chances for further shows and Aftershow performances, so be it.

Aftershow performances have NEVER been guaranteed all Prince's career. In London in 2002, I attended three to get one 45 minute performance. What has changed in 2007? Why does tickets being sold through Ticketmaster totally change Prince's arrangements and attitude?

It doesn't. It is the fans who have jumped to conclusions because the tickets were being sold through TM.

Flame me all you like, but I challenge you to find one, single instance where Prince performances were guaranteed at Aftershows in writing.

If you can't provide evidence for believing Prince was guaranteed to perform this is all in your fucking heads isn't it?

OK I certainly hope not but I know this was in response to my post so if u carefully re read it u will see I made the same point as u did. I said the article made P fans sound like "spoiled brats" not that I think they are spoiled brats. I can read from the article that the ticket sales were promoted as special aftershows and see that people bought these tickets thinking they would see P perform at the aftershow. Still the article does make the complainers seem like spoiled brats even going as far as to mention Housequake and the org in particular...

Ah, I wasn't so much commenting on your views (I do agree with what you said), but rather on the people who might take away the impression you described (of fans being spoiled, complaining over nothing etc). There's been a little of that in the Concerts forum - some fans have been delighted with the aftershows, some haven't.

It'd just be nice to see a little solidarity and support. It's not about having a go at Prince or demanding aftershow performances etc. Prince doesn't come by this way very often, we're all appreciate and grateful for any shows we're lucky enough to see. The complaints have more to do with the way Ticketmaster and AEG have mis-represented the event and their subsequent handling of complaints. Some people have travelled far and wide to see Prince, and £25+fees per ticket is fair chunk of money for anyone who works for a living, people with families etc. Put it this way - if you could only afford to go on one night, and it turned out on that night that you'd spent your money for the honour of hearing a DJ spin discs in a bar, it'd be pretty disappointing.

I'm totally with you on this one and you're right it would be nice to see some solidarity here on the org. As it stands I've noticed that for every justified (IMO) moan on the org about the no-shows at the aftershows you can soon find someone hitting back with the obligatory....It was made clear he wouldn't perform at all the aftershows, you shouldn't expect him to play every aftershow every night.....line.

But that's the point isn't it? I don't expect him to play every night, it is going to be knackering, I understand that, but that still doesn't change the fact that for some of us when we bought the tickets there were no warnings whatsoever! When these aftershow tickets were released I found out via a huge 1 page advert in a newspaper I was reading. They'd added more dates at 02 and launched these aftershow tickets. I still have that advert and there is absolutely nothing on it whatsoever mentioning that he won't show, so call me a prat if you like but I read "Prince - The Official Aftershow" as "an aftershow at which Prince will at the very least appear"! To top that, when I called Ticketmaster to find out how to get one of these tickets and asked what it was all about the guy actually said that "it's at the Indigo2 where Prince will perform his aftershow, doors will open at 11.30 so you need to get there quick if you want to be at the front to see him" Again, no mention of Prince not actually showing up, no warning at all!

Now I don't dispute that the warnings are now plastered left right and centre, but we all need to stand together on this issue because the fact is that these warnings were not visible when tcikets first went on sale. IMO the full intention was to sell as many tickets as possible off the back of the minimal (and misleading) wording of the original promotion before pointing out the reality of the situation. It's a marketing scam if you like, similar to the - £235 gets you access to a pre-show party and VIP tickets in the 1st 10 rows - which then later changed to - first 10 rows BEHIND the front row and 1st 10 rows of the lower tier!

When I booked afershow tickets I didn't even know that there were aftershows every night! I was told (again by this bloke at Ticketmaster) that it was on selected nights only, and I asked him to check if there was one on the night I was attending. Had he said that there's an aftershow every night then maybe that would've prompted alarm bells to ring and I'd have queried the likeihood of Prince doing 21 shows AND performing at 21 aftershows!

Obviously, as I didn't feel the need to record this telephone conversation at the time I've since found (when the warnings circulated and it became common knowledge that he may not appear) that I don't have a leg to stand on with Ticketmaster and obtaining a refund. So I attended the aftershow still hoping that maybe I'd get lucky and I queued for over an hour before being told that Prince and the band were definitly not coming. Gutted, I was totally gutted. So I hope others on the Org can see why some of us are so dissapointed.

Very well put.

I didn't get shafted by VIP or no show aftershows, however, I'm totally behind anyone with a grievance, because of the very nature in how it was sold and delivered (or not delivered as the case may be).

Saying you "shouldn't expect it" or "give the man a break" don't hold any water. If they did, he simply shouldn't have pre-sold any tickets. He created the expectation, so delivery or non delivery falls on his shoulders, and the management company he puts in charge of his sales.

I think the problem is only amplified due to the fact he is making all of Europe come to him, rather than going to the different countries. People are spending a lot of money just to be there. A no show is a kick in the teeth.

Who are u quoting? My stance on the issue is quite clear. While I know the disclaimer wasn't visible when tickets were being purchased my point was to find out who was responsible.. Its easy to point fingers and waste energy and time but if ur pointing in the wrong direction thats all ur doing is wasting energy and time. Its really neither here nor there for me but I think all of the people who feel they were slighted need to find the correct source and then take the necessary actions. I can't say who is to blame for this confusion and I'm not going to leap to conclusions like some others and be wrong. If people want to take out their frustrations thats fine but u should know who's to blame before u start complaining and demanding things.

I have been to see Prince twice now and have attended both aftershow parties, one on a Tuesday, and one on a Saturday, and was lucky to have him turn up on both.

At the end of the day tho, the Aftershow party tickets did not stipulate what was included when I bought them so I didnt know whether to expect Prince at them or not.

Well I have been at the concert and the aftershow (the tickets for the aftershow are marked- "live") on thursday 13th and I was not quite satisfied.
Prince had much better concerts in the 80s. One third of the concert he played alone on the piano, a medley of hits and he created a non-dance atmosphere by playing slow songs mixed with dance songs so one couldn't really dance. His solo act lasted for at least 2o minutes and got us all relaxed and sleepy. There was no consistency in the show although the performance was good as usual. Not really what I expected..
Aftershow: and after waiting (standing) for almost two hours in the crowd with nothing happening, and everybody just standing and waiting, when they finally showed up on the stage, our feet and back were hurting and the show consisting mainly of jamming and covers didn't really have that kind of an impact.. (axcept of Musicology and Part). He did ok, but not his best show ever..

but the question still remains... Who came up with the idea to call it an aftershow and charge extra for those tickets advertised as such. Was it P's camp or Ticketmaster's attempt to capitalize on the money that could be made from misleading people? If it was the idea of P and his camp then fine they mislead the people and should own up to it. But it seems this was not the case. It seems it was Ticketmaster and AEG that advertised these events as aftershows and not afterparties.
Like I said earlier in my post, Prince or those working with/for him. Had the word gone out BEFORE the aftershow tickets went onsale that Prince would not be performing then, fine, people don't have a reason to be upset. But, it was advertised as Prince-The Aftershow or something and I'll be damned if Prince, as big a control freak as he is, would let something like that get past him without his stamp of approval. My thinking is that he probably planned to play that many aftershows and, let he usually does, changed his mind with notifying anyone.

Just another example of him being a friggin' LIAR in my opinion. He treats people like shit, and has for quite some time. These people paid money for an aftershow. We ALL know what that means, right?
