I dont get it... why is Prince suiting YouTube a bad thing?

Everyone seems to be up in arms about it... am I missing something?

I was a fan long before YouTube...and I will be a fan after YouTube.

As long as the man keeps producing products, what else is there to say?

Am I missing someone?

It's a bad thing because it will set precedence in the governing of the internet!

It's a bad thing because it will give WebSheriff the credibility to back up it's claim of being the Internet Police!

It'll open up the flood gates to changes in what we do on the internet and how we do it!

It's much bigger than Prince and his image! What he's setting into motion, if he's successful(which is why this pisses me off, he's always successful) WILL affect us all.

The MPA, RIAA and NAB have been searching for a way in, to govern our liberties on the internet, if Prince with the help of WebSheriff wins against youtube, etc. he hands it to them on a silver platter!

The internet is already governed by intellectual property law, and Prince is simply seeking to assert what he considers are his legal rights. As it is, most people here know of Prince's actions because he appears to have garnered significant publicity over it.

However, other bodies are already much further down the road in pursuing similar legal action against Youtube / Google over infringement of intellectual property rights - the BBC, for example. If Prince's actions were to result in Youtube being required to monitor uploads to attempt to prevent the infringement of Prince's copyrights, I don't think it would necessitate any precedent being set.

I'm well aware of that, Langebleu. My other favorite internet hangout. http://www.eff.org

While other factions are further ahead in their attempts, a win by someone with Prince's celebrity and visibility, as proven by how much significant publicity this foolishness has garnered in such a short time, will in fact contribute to their cases as well.

it is bringing down opinion of Prince the way that "We Are The World" non participation did. I was at the Austin City Limits Music festival (Bjork was cool) and had a few people commented to me with a negative attitude towards Prince. "Why is he doing that?" "What a hypocrite."

it's bad because he's trying to be hyper controlling about something that doesn't hurt him and really brings him more recognition than anything else. I hate this lawsuit happy prince. So ridiculous.

Simple. Prince could be working at making good music vs. working on who he is going to file a lawsuit on next!! I think things would work out better for everyone if he focused on making killer music.

Many musicians wouldn't be pissed at youtube, seems like Prince could have worked with youtube and cleaned up this mess (his gripes) without a lawsuit but ohh no. So you just wonder, is he just all about the money at this point??? Does he attack because the google connection? Does being #1 at the bank come over being #1 with the art?

So they took down all his shit from youtube!! Who the hell is Prince to speak about another persons art??

But Prince understands the more he shits all over his fans, the more they will come back for more. Open up a music club and close it on your hardcore fans without reason and mention it will open again but don't open it again, don't come thru with promised albums, start a magazine and ditch it and no refund, crystal ball f-up, sell aftershow tickets and do or don't play!

Generally shit on those around you and then you are mysterious! And the public get enough of you.

He is attacking youtube and worried about art?? How about worrying about the crap music being released? Loud as hell recordings with no depth and warmth, just made for cheap ipods. Made by musicians who couldn't survive without using pro tools. Prince is better than worrying about bullshit like youtube, he could be bullshitting us with a new project that would never appear!!! HAHA!

The ironic thing is that some of the videos put up on YouTube were put there by Universal, who is a former label of his and currently handle his song publishing. lol And YouTube was one of the official outlets to see the "Guitar" video. If he had such a bug up his ass about it, that wouldn't have been the case.

He's talking out both sides of his ass on this one.

because its hypocritical to talk about how "free" music should be, give away free cds to london fans, and then go and sue Youtube...aka a site that has actually helped more people learn about him and has helped my generation gain more access to music that we have been shut out from via MTV/BET/VH1 SHOWcasing tHE SAME TYPE OF MUSIC AND MUSIC VIDEOS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN...honestly Prince should be on his knees to youtube and myspace instead of "fighting the good fight" for the general music industry who barely wanted to showcase his music HOW he wanted to present it, and wanted to shackle him....but oh how Money blinds us from the past I GUESS...or either old age

if he sues youtube and other sites and is successful what else can my generation do??? the radio doesnt play a variety of music anymore, the stations I mentioned dont...internet WAS AND STILL IS MY GENERATION'S RADIO!...

SO TO HELL WITH PRINCE
thankyou and goodnight

I can see your point. If Prince doesn't want his work on youtube, that's fine, sue and get it off of there. It's his work and he should definately have a say in where it's placed.

However, if they take his work off of their site, it's over and leave them alone. If other artists feel the same way, let them sue too but for the ones that don't mind, let them remain.

ITS not just about Youtube, Prince is waging war against any site that shows his music...whether it be youtube, myspace, ebay, housequake, etc..and is much bigger than what you may think...there is always going to be a site regardless of what you say that is going to be showcasing his music as long as the internet is around...and now that the music industry is in such a crappy state now there is more and more need for this service

Ok prince will be around for a long time...but you have to realize that as a musician his fans are NOT going to be the same age as him and are used to different things...I come from the CD/Napster and Youtube generation not the 12 inch or even tape generation and to me this is alienating a fanbase that can help keep his legacy alive. Some of you fans think that just because you have been with him since 1979 or "Batman" or whenever that it's ok for him to do some of the things he's done because he's an "oldie but goodie", that he'll just last forever and ever but I'm here to tell you, that when you all eventually die and he dies, which will inevitably happen, who is going to be there to tell the story of his legacy and to help spread the word???.It certainly won't be yall but me and your grandchildren and your grandchildren's children.....with the way he is hampering us spreading the word and not giving us proper avenues to see his work what is really trying to accomplish???, Prince.org is getting younger and younger by the minute and as he said,"TIMES ARE CHAngING" AND instead of trying to fight things like a old man who cant get with the times he needs to adapt like actually make a princetube or something, or actually sell GOOD footage from back in the day or SOMETHING...I know he's not college educated but I'm sure he's smart enough to think of something besides suing these sites confused ....

what good is someone being around for a long time when eventually the people who surround them are going to hate him for doing something that dramatically affected their music listening experience in such a negative way???....I remember how my mother said she would always treat me with respect as a child because she didnt want me to resent her and put her in a nurshing home...and the more Prince disrespects his fans the more apt we are going to be to resent him and downgrade his musical influence from a man who positively affected pop culture as we know it to the man who became the token music policeman who brought a halt to generation X and Y trying to find fresh voices amongst all the garbage we are being brainwashed with on the radio and tv.. ...

prince is a very insecure, fearful, and selfish human being
the only reason he even likes his fans around is so that he has someone to perform for
we're his little teddy bears
it's just to make him feel good
once in a great while he has an epiphany
but unfortunately, it only lasts for about a weekend

GOOD © love 4 one another

he lives and dies by his music
and he will
THAT will be his legacy
that and nothing else

I am from the old school days, when Prince was in his prime, but I still enjoy his old music and videos. We can only hope that he will be making these and his new ones available to us by some means. It would be a shame for any of his work to become extinct. He has to have a plan.We just have to be patient and wait and see.
