If Wendy saying that he said that to her is not good enough, then I don't know what is. I'm sorry if her word has no merit with some. But since some of you seem to like to stretch things to the point where nothing can satisfy, here is an "anti-gay" quote from Prince himself:

"Bambi, can't you understand.....Bambi, it's better with a man". LOL!!!

Some of you just don't seem to think that your hero has homophobic tendencies. Even if he does it doesn't mean he's the devil or anything, it means he's human, and humans are dumb sometimes. What it boils down to for me is that it is so sad for someone who used to be such a leader turn into such a follower.

(Oh, by the way, the Bambi lyric supports my first post in this thread, so please don't say how the lyrics are about ego and not homophobia. Ego CAN lead to anti-gay statements. Shit, I too have made comments like "Damn, she needs some dick in her life." Regardless of what you wanna call it, that is a gay-related comment, so stop trying to make comments like that be anything but what they are.)

there's some really interesting points throughout this thread. At the end of the day i am far more happy that he is JW than a scientologist [although i think he'd make a damn fine album around THAT subject!]. Just to keep it simple my issues are 1] him seemingly not being in control and happy to have his ideas so heavily influenced which leads onto 2] his constant pushing of JW theology over the last few years seems to be taking over and becoming a crusade. Is there any real difference between the JW who knocks on your door interupting your evening and Prince preaching interupting yo' funk!'.
He is happy and healthy [ i assume] and not a drugged up , pissed up star of yestereday, i just wish he'd take advantage of his gifts more.
I suspect a lot of us have grown up with his music, do we really need to be lectured to at our age, yeah i'm all for learning and will have open ears but that's a two way thing, i respect your views, you respect mine.
I also find his views tend to get twisted and confused, 1 minute he's vegan of the year, next he's serving up meat in Vegas!. A journalist once described him as 'a confusing little Bastard', how true and we love him for it.

You're absolutely right. Ever since practically the beginning Prince has mixed his religous beliefs into his music so I don't see why people are offended now all of a sudden, he's been doing it forever.

A few examples:

* The song "Controversy" includes the "Our Father" prayer.
* Purple Rain is full of religous references like "May U Live 2 See The Dawn" and when he drives his motorcycle through the tunnel that says "Love God" in the When Doves Cry video.
* The whole conversation with God skit in his shows during the Purple Rain tour.
* He has a song called "God."
* The song "The Cross" from Sign O The Times.
* The whole LoveSexy was very religous.

Those are just a few examples off the top of my head from the 80's so if mixing religious beliefs with music is offensive to some people then it's kinda hard for me to see how they ever became fans of Prince's music since the religious references have been all over his work for practically his entire career.

You forgot Let's Go Crazy smile
R We Gonna let D'elevator bring Us down .

D'elevator is Satan.

I Would Die 4 U :

U'R just a sinner I am told,I'll be U'r fire when you are cold.
I'll make U happy when U R sad , I'll make U good when U'r bad.
All I really need is to know that U'll beleve.

He's talking about Jesus.

thinkin too much about lyrics!! AGAIN YOU GUYS.

last time i discussed Ps religious leaning on here i got a hate mail tellin me off for 'dissn the word' npgMC was gettin like that as well.

there is no room for zealots of anykind in this world! apart from prince fans that is!!! lol

i thinks hes a very clever and witty lyricist using fantastic metaphors and similies but unfortunately some people take everything literally.

like 'I am your messiah' - who ever thought he actually was blaspheming on that was crazy!!
I Would Die 4 U :

'U'R just a sinner I am told,I'll be U'r fire when you are cold.
I'll make U happy when U R sad , I'll make U good when U'r bad.

LOVE SONG ACTUALLY!! when you truly love some one you will understand his lyrics - to die for someone you love is the ultimate sign of that love which is why soldiers die for their country, men die for their gods and P is sayin he would die for his love for the person he is singing to.

Prince presents himself to me from the very beginning of his music to be on the same journey everyone is one. he sings about his loves his losses his friendships his music all his passions from being a young man and the complexities of sexuality, i dont think i have ever heard a sexist or homophobic lyric. lyrics are important to me as it completes the music. Ps lyrics are so clever they enhance the tunes.

his most compelling love song has to be 'if i was your girlfriend' its awesome!

im not religious but his understanding of the bible (which i was made to study intensely as a child) is fantastic and the way he can work that into some powerful music is genius. 7 is a fantastic example of wordsmithery mixed with very clever arrangments.

i say we all listen to the groove - listen to the tune that is relevant to you that particular day and forget the stuff you dont like - after all the world has witnessed a young man growing older through his music. as are we!

although i have to say i love the ballads the really BIG songs

'Love is like the sky..it never stops'

inspired? yes i think so - dont really care what the inspiration is tho!!!

long may it last.

The simple thing is that people letting 'rule' their lives by religious dogma's and rules are on a wrong path.

They place those rigid 'things' above their intuition and feelings, and it ruins their personality and soul.

Prince is obviously going the 'hard way' here, i hope he realises at some time he is fooling himself by following such a creepy sect, and really starts to deal with his issues.

If Prince is your friend then he should absolutely respect your views.

Prince's art doesn't have to respect anyone's views but his own. He's offended one group or another through that art for damn near 30 years. Why should he start being more 'respectful' now?

So he should respect his fans above himself?

I'm not suggesting that he shouldn't be criticised if someone is offended by his views. It's a free country, so go for it.

But, I personally don't expect him to temper his views that he expresses in his art to be more acceptable to the masses, or his fans or whoever. At the end of the day it's his expression.

I'd rather hear an honest expression of views that I may not agree with than something watered down so as not to offend our fragile sensibilities.

I try to handle all people 'losing their mind' to some form of überdogmatic, sectarian religion, and who 'demand' people to publicly reannounce their sexuality, in the same way. Wether that person is called John Doe or "Prince rogers Nelson".

And, yes, in that sense i feel offended by Princes 'recent' lyrics, especially on the 'no go area' The Rainbow Children.

Somehow i have a strong sense that some people here are not speaking their hearts. Its like because they consider themselves as 'fans', they shouldnt be too critical about the person they are a 'fan' off.

I have no problem with that. Creepy, ignorant lyrics, are creepy, ignorant lyrics.

There is no religious preaching in 'Lion of Judah'.

'Lion of Judah' concerns a relationship and contains Prince's most honest, powerful lyrics in years.

Have you actually read or properly listened to the lyrics for 'Lion of Judah'? It sounds like you have only given it a superficial listen, with all due respect.

If 'Lion of Judah' is religious, then '7' is a Gospel song.

'Lion of Judah' is indicative of strength and the ability to conquer one's enemies. Nothing else.

well yeah its about that but apparently you don't know who the Lion of Judah is...its another name for Christ. Jesus is the Lion of Judah. In other words Prince is saying I will stand and be strong like Christ

Its very much a religious song...sorry even if don't want it to be confused

why is that? Are you mistaking human behavior for some kind of religious hate?

It amazes me that people get offended... Christian...means Christ like. Tell me one thing about Christ that could possibly offend you? Christ helped tend to the sick, poor and needy. He judged no one and he called on Christians to live as such. The problem is in our human nature we are weak. You hating religion because you think someone is judging you because your gay? Do you think that only reigious people would do that? Sorry gays got it bad from most people including their own...so my advice to you is perhaps you should pick up a bible and read about Christ...because you cleary don't know what your talkig about.

Heck without religion black people would still be slaves, or Martin Luther King and others during the Civil Rights movement would have no moral highground to change segregation in the South. What about Ghandi and Mother Teresa

It really bothers me when people blame religion for the inherent screwed up nature of human behavior

Reading this thread...eye find it a bit confusing and sad . Yes...this is only my opinion. From me personally eye am not a JW but eye am 1 of Strong Faith and Love of God. Eye have always Respected and Appreciated Prince's Music And Songwriting. The lyrics and music we hear from him are like his personal diary he is sharing with us. These r words, thoughts, feelings, experiences and Faith he is sharing with us from his heart and soul... eye feel. Eye am in no way offended by his music. Again, this is my thoughts and feelings on this. Eye do support Prince and eye do admire the fact he expresses himself and shares what he Believes. And eye know it must be so hard 2 have so many people who comment and have so many differnt opinions on u'r every move. Eye feel There r many Believers here. Eye just wanted 2 show my support and let him know there r the 1's here who do c the Light* yes angel rainbo star

Woah Woah Woah. You might want to go re-read your history books. Christianity may have been a spiritual inspiration for Martin Luther Kings and others, but it definitely was not the focus of the whole movement. The Civil Rights movement had a moral platform to stand on without religion. It is the simple fact that you do NOT treat people as blacks and other minorities were treated in America. That is all the moral highground you needed. You don't need to be close with God to see the injustices that were happening in America.

Ill tell you what offends me about him.

1. That we have to beleive that he existed, and if so, that he was important.
2. That we have to beleive he is the son of GOD.
3. That we have to beleive Christ was more important that the other "saviors", ie Mohammed, Budda, etc.
4. Wars were started in his name, many thousands of years ago, which we are still fighting... Its not just about Oil. Millions of people have died in the name of Christ, and religion in general is an evil that causes hated and bigotry around the world. Religion causes societal divison and sometimes leads to hardship. The Romans put the Christians to the Lions, but the Christians made up for those atrocities over time, transforming (and killing) people around the world to beleive that their version of the truth is the only truth. Making people beleive that if you were not a Christian, you were an uncivilised monster and would go to hell.
5. Thankfully Christianity is losing popularity here in Europe as people are getting better educated. The church wants us to have a more "Christian" education, or no education at all so that people are not able to think freely and decide for themselves that Christianity is a pointless waste of space.
6. The main things that is offensive about Christ is that its completely pointless, we dont need it, yet its everywhere in our faces. Just give it up, its no longer relevant in today's society.Lets all live in peace without trying to outdo each other. No one is right or wrong, there should be no religion as there is no right or wrong answer. If it gives you comfort, then thats fine - but dont bring it or try to bring it upon others who are living peaceful ordinary lives. Dont try to make it meaningful to others just because its meaningful to you, dont try to make us care, when there are enough problems in life. Its NOT the answer, get a good massage, that will make you feel better.

O.K. let's not get into a whole theological debate here, my beliefs are not the point, if people are cool with Christ then that really is cool with me. My issue is one of imposing your points of view In the context of Prince there really is the feeling that you are with him or against him since the JW faith kicked in. Lovesexy was more inclusive, 3121 seems to be EXclusive and on a side note this era seems to be very materialistic.

Holy Cow!, i was going to avoid this but i'll also add that the whole concept of going to church seems to be saying 'hey i'm not worthy', 'i am a sinner and I must beg forgiveness'. Felt like that in the U.K. anyway. However i went to a church in Harlem once and I came out TOTALLY uplifted.

Yes, but YOU went to church, the church didnt come to you. It was your choice. I had friends pushing me for years to become a "fulltime" Christian, I felt guilty and bad about the whole process. But over time, I learned to realise the bullsh1t that it really all is!

we are still friends. We just dont encroach that subject anymore. So maybe they have realised that I am not interested and just dont talk about it. They are decent people. Its interesting because my "other" friends have disowned them, whilst I truly dont mind them as long as we dont get into an argument about Christ!

And neither should Prince.

I thought that's one of the qualities people around here used to celebrate...
"What kind of fuck ending is that?"
