Actually it does, because I was agreeing with the person who said HE WAS BACK THEN! Back then, when he wasn't a JW, he was sometimes homophobic, but he didn't :publicize" it like he does now when he IS a JW.

As another poster mentioned, having a belief that homosexuality is wrong is not homophobic.

Do you say that someone who doesn't want to walk on a tight rope across the grand canyon afraid of heights?

No, he just doesn't want to walk on a tight rope. Prince believes that Bible teaches homosexual activity is wrong but that doesn't equate to being homophobic.

JW's are the last people you would call homophobic as they would want to teach them just like any other person that they feel is not following God's standards.

Homophobic people SHUN and are even afraid of homosexuals.

I never had any time for organised Religion that uses all manner of tricks to suck you in. Prince seems to be well into this now and i ain't happy.
I had no issues with the whole Lovesexy voyage, maybe it's just the thought of LG etc taking control, anyways anyone think i'm being way too narrow minded on this or not?...Is anyone else offended by P's JW / Biblical references in his last few albums...

"Chelsea Rodgers" definitely has a more religious slant. In "Lion of Judah", Prince is simply invoking the image of something so monumental because he himself feels so insignificant. It's really a wonderful song and fits in more with the religious imagery of Lovesexy or even "7" than the religious messages of more recent material.

Im no JW but I can appreciate that as their main philosphy is to 'Spread the word chatterbox Prince, isnt going to cease referencing his beliefs in any of his materials, no matter how much some people may dislike it.

He has always had religious beliefs and I dont see that situation changing any time soon.

So we better get used to the religious references and the bible bashing since he's been a fully fledged paid up member of the JW's for some time now. In fact it may get worse as he gets older if my step mother's actions and behaviour are anything to go by..... blahblah

OK,I'll give you this, maybe saying he's homophobic is a little strong. However he has made anti-gay comments. Does that mean he hates all gay people? No, just like someone who calls a black person a nigger isn't necessarily racist, they just made a racial (and extremely stupid) comment. So how about I say during Prince's JW affiliation he has made racial, sexist, and anti-gay remarks in a more public forum than he has in the past. He has also made remarks relating to orthodox religion and the beliefs of certain orthodox relgions in a more public forum than in the past.

wendy said so. He wanted them to denounce their sexuality. HE ALSO HAD A PROBLEM WITH WENDY BEING 'PART' JEWISH.

Larry gayham has also said on stage; god made adam and eve NOT adam and steve and i have heard the audio.

Prince's views were obviously hugely influenced by larry. it seems that when he is out of the picture for awhile Prince lays off the dogma.

Another person who can see past the title.

Come on folks, clean your ears out - Lion Of Judah is NOT a religious song.

In answer to the OP - Religious references in Prince's recent work do not offend me - I don't agree with them necessarily, but it just so happens in recent years his most interesting stuff has had a religious, or at least an esoteric, slant to it.

Were people offended by Christian lyrics before TRC, because Prince's stuff has always been litered with overt Christian references.

You're absolutely right. Ever since practically the beginning Prince has mixed his religous beliefs into his music so I don't see why people are offended now all of a sudden, he's been doing it forever.

A few examples:

* The song "Controversy" includes the "Our Father" prayer.
* Purple Rain is full of religous references like "May U Live 2 See The Dawn" and when he drives his motorcycle through the tunnel that says "Love God" in the When Doves Cry video.
* The whole conversation with God skit in his shows during the Purple Rain tour.
* He has a song called "God."
* The song "The Cross" from Sign O The Times.
* The whole LoveSexy was very religous.

Those are just a few examples off the top of my head from the 80's so if mixing religious beliefs with music is offensive to some people then it's kinda hard for me to see how they ever became fans of Prince's music since the religious references have been all over his work for practically his entire career.

eek lol

Let me try again... whether or not he was a signed up practising member of a particular religion.

Prince appears to have had faith in God for longer than he has been a JW, and the fact that this 'faith/understanding' has been explored before now in his lyrics and that has also caused controversy, might lead a resonable mind to assume Prince's beliefs would continue to feature in his music.

Well, that's secondhand (if that) info based on what Wendy "said". Not really an example of Prince making "anti gay statements." Definitely not enough proof to warrant an inflammatory accustation of, "Prince has made anti gay statements".

Again, that's Larry Graham. No doubt Prince is influenced by Larry, but that is hardly the same as "Prince making anti-gay statements". Again, you have no proof/quote/evidence of "Prince making anti-gay statements".

I can't say that I take offense at this, I am a little dissapointed that he's turned such a 180 though. I miss the sexy-freaky Prince from the '80's. He got me through puberty with his freaky self and I have too many fond memories of gettin' freaky to his tunes.

If all we have nowadays is R.Kelly and his driveling man-operas then I feel REAL sorry for the world.

D'Angelo had that ONE song that was trying REAL HARD to come close.

I really miss the days of Erotic City, Head, Come, and the list goes on and on.... Music that flew in the face of convention and caused heart attacks in the minds of the religious-right. Lyrics that titillated and brought about advisory stickers.

Ahhhh, those were the days... good times, gooood times.

I try to respect everbody's religious views. I don't have to agree with them. Therefore I don't feel offended by Prince's biblical references. He's entitled to his opinion. Prince could however be a little bit more sensitive to his fans' different beliefs and don't be so pushy when trying to bring his point across. He has the tendency to act like his way is the only way. That's very judgmental, coming from a man who doesn't like to be judged.
People don't want to hear him preach when they spend their hard-earned money to hear him sing. A concert is neither the place nor the time to talk religion.

funkyhead, you replied within my quote! It makes it look like what you said is what I said (Heaven forbid!--OJ!).

Don't get too offended by me (I know you'll deny this!). Here's my view:

If Prince is a JW, he is not like any other JW going. Listen more and more to his lyrics, not what you heard about what he is or is not handing out. The real Prince is in his lyrics. Once you realise this, you see how much bs has been written about him. Just listen to the lyrics and remember:

"No, not your body, your mind..."

andyf

JW's, God Bless 'em, mostly miss the point. Not the Angels, not even the Son know the end time, so if they are claiming that they do, then they are trying to get between the Father and the Son. It's the same old story as with every religion, even atheism. Each religion (even atheism) thinks their view is the reality (cue the offended funkyhead claiming I need a 'reality check'--in other words his/her reality is the right one, anyone disagrees they are mad--not very funky really!).

And if every religion (including atheism) thinks their point of view is the right one, then each religion (including atheism) thinks they will eventually be rewarded and every other religion (including atheism) will be punished. To quote Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman": WHAT A CROCK OF S**T!

Now some religions (including atheism) actually WANT the other religions (including atheism) to suffer and their religion (including atheism) to get rewarded.

Prince knew very early on that this is poppycock. Who would want ANYBODY to suffer? Huh? Prince, yes, knew very early on, cue the beginning to 1999:

"Don't worry, I won't hurt you [you will not suffer]. I ONLY WANT YOU TO HAVE SOME FUN": now this voice was very deep, no? And who do you think P was paraphrasing? Yes, indeedy, P knew very early on.

I've never heard any anti-gay lyrics in any Prince song, but if there were, so what.

These are Prince's lyrics in Prince's songs. If you don't like 'em, don't listen. Simple as that.

So the point of you calling his view stupid and horrible is what? You think you're right and he's wrong?

See how this is futile? So why worry about it in the first place?

For every person that says your view is right there just as many people says it's wrong.

you obviously didn't spot anything.

A man like larry graham would be offended by being called gay; get it?

Calling a gay person gay is not an insult and if i was a performer and someone thought i was gay; SO WHAT? i WOULDN'T BE INSULTED becuase i have no problem with that; Larry would becuase he thinks it's a sin.

I do not respect Larry at all so i will make fun of him; o.k

Any normal loving person would say his view and the view of religious fanatics is wrong. Even alot of religious people who don;t follow the bible WORD FOR WORD would say it's horrible to think like that.

I just don't like the path down which Prince has walked. I much preferred/agreed with his viewpoint during the Lovesexy era. I don't agree with JWs as a religion. That said, I don't find his proselytizing offensive, just misguided... and, as a result, frustrating.
