I expected to hate this, but it's decent. He's not trying too hard. It's relaxed and cool at the same time. My Legacy

I never want to hear Prince rap. Or kind of rap.

I MUST say this. Mr Goodnight is kicking my ass. I said earlier in the thread that this song is a grower and now that I have heard the song on CD, it's made me root for the song. When the song started, it was like a revelation to me. I was finally digging the groove and his spoken words were making sense for the first time. This song is damn good and Prince is still finding ways to surprise me. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I love this track. The grove is hypnotic and Princes lyrics are great. One of my favs of the album. I keep thinking it was a track made around the time Incense & Candles was...just has something to it that makes me think of it.

I have no problem with Prince kinda halfway "rapping" on this one but it's the melody or chorus that I hate that sounds kinda "shit hoppish". This sounds like he was trying to get radio airplay for today's listeners which is a total complete turnoff for me. Fuck today's listeners. This song should be replaced by a song for his real fans. Andy is a four letter word.

the vocal styling sounds like he was reading it off a lyric sheet and trying 2 make things fit with the groove... man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

This song really is a love it or hate it
Now that I'm fully into this CD I really do like this one - it is a grower and he is no forcing a rap but rather just speaking I let a big hip-hop friend of mine hear this one and he really liked it! I was a bit shocked I also really dig the keybaord atmosphere sounds that came straight from the same Yamaha Motif I have and have used in a few pieces I've composed - niiiiice The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Naturally some folks will hate this right off the bat, but I like that he didn't spoil this with some awful effect, like I&C's vocoder. I&C would have been a good song without that effect, and maybe in 20 years it won't sound as ridiculous.
This one rolls along nicely and sounds honestly cool, not self consciously trying to be so. My Legacy

I'm not so sure on those top 5 albums you have picked. But I agree that "Mr. Goodnight" sounds like it should have been on NPS. I feel like most of the material on Planet Earth was actually recycled from previous recordings. Not much of it sounds fresh. Truthfully he should have taken the best tracks from MUSICOLOGY, 3121, and PLANET EARTH and just made one great album.

Well, if this ain't a spiffy little sexjam...!
I am taking notes from his lyrics in this one, by the way I like the polish-ish sound. How will we argue over whether its rap or spoken word? Who cares? Its' Prince! HousequakeWallaby knows about dat QUAKE!

I like this one. Sticks in my head. Sultry, sexy and silly, like Prince should be. The Grand Seducer strikes again. Don't understand all the hate on this one.

The twin sister of "Incense and candles" ; the song sounds good but the prodcution is way too BLAND, this could have kicked some asses with a more agressive, dance-rap style...

Mr. G is slinky and sexy.
I'd be curious to know what what the haters of this song consider their Top Five. Among my my guesses would be "Adore" and "Empty Room".

I've been listening to Mr. goodnight over and over, and I know think it is THE JAM. So silky smooth and funny at the same time. Great album! "Don't you think one of the charms of marriage is that it makes deception a necessity for both parties?"

This song reminds me of something that Larry or Mr. Furley from "Three's Company" would put on the hifi to seduce Chrissy, while talking about astrology and offering her brandy in amber goblets. It's completely tacky and dated and in some places just plain silly.
AND I LOVE IT. The song is deeply flawed, and in spite of this - or BECAUSE of it - I can enjoy it over and over. It brings to mind the awkward smutty kitsch of songs like "Horny Pony" and "18 & Over", which, if you can get past the initial stupidity, can be guilty pleasures at the very least. Within the confines of his "cleaned up" asthetic, this is the first weirdo-cheesy sex/seduction rant in years that had me giggling and saying WTF?! And I'm all for that. They can't all be classics, but if they're going to be schlocky, at least they can be fun schlock like this song.

The very first thing I thought of when I heard this song was "Incense and Candles". I hated that song and I hate this one too. Both songs are something that sounds radio friendly and I absolutely hate the shit that's all over the radio today. The best thing about it is there is only one song that sounds like it on the album. Prince really should practice what he preaches when he downs today's artists and put NO radio friendly songs on his albums. Andy is a four letter word.

I love how the album is called Planet Earth and he is all trying to be environmentally concious...then he refers to a private jet. He is the king of hypocrisy. And little spanish man? That's kind of rude, too. I don't mean to hate...but let's be real.
