At first the song sounded like he used an old drum loop from the eighties, and maybe he did. It is very addictive. I may have to digest this song some more.

I love everything about this song except the title..."Future Baby Mama". I still can't get past. The song sounds nothing like shit hop but it has a damn shit hop slang phrase for a title that just erks me because I hate shit hop that much. Other than that, it's a great song. okay not as bad as my initial 1st listening of it ..but damn it's time 2 put that linn drum sound away ... man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I totally agree. I like the song a lot, but I wonder if he knows that "future babymama" basically implies knocking up a girl you have no intention of marrying. Using that title lowers the romantic nature of the song. I like the melody though, and the chord changes. Some of these songs seem more melodic and thought out than he's done in a long time (with the exception of TGRES which was over-thought-out and over-melodic) [Edited 7/25/07 13:49pm] My Legacy

Cinnie said: PROOF THAT THE ORG INFLUENCES PRINCE'S SONG TOPICS:
I've heard it said my love was look-a-like Aw cmon. Everybody says that. Even the DJ on the radio said that after she finished playing FBM. I'll tell you why it gets said: There's a lot of angry women out there who don't fit Prince's outward criteria. It's funny when I talk to women who get mad about that, like he did something to them, lol

My very first time hearing this song I chuckled, I just couldn't help it. I called my friend and said "tell me Y Prince got a song called future babY momma" and my friend, who is also a Prince fan was like, " I have to hear it. I want to hear him say future baby momma." Now that I've heard it a lot, I think it's an ok song. Not the best on the album, IMO. U can cut off all my fins - But 2 your ways I will not bend

Absolutely, point-blank, still my favourite song on the album.
LOVE it! | |

It's a decent slow jam, with a nice groove, but I'm not blown away by it. When I heard the song was called "Future Baby Mama" I braced myself for something awkward, but P sings it in a way that makes it sound like the most natural title ever. Nice vocals...BTW, is it me, or is Prince's voice starting to age a bit? Not in a bad way, just in the way of natural maturation. [Edited 7/26/07 10:01am] Michael never stopped!

I don't think he is going to marry again... at least that is how he is feeling now. But he IS interested in having kids and is carefully considering the kind of woman that he would settle with and share his life and children with. I think his use of this term is an indication that this woman will be as important to him as Goldie is to Kurt, or Susan (Sarandan) is to Tim (Robbins) or Vanessa is to Johnny Depp.... see? these women are all "baby mamas" but they are highly regarded and cherished. I think this is what Prince is alluded to. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

I think this is what Prince is alluded to. I've always viewed Prince as a gay man that may have never admitted to himself (which is something every gay man eventually has to do). I always got the impression that the only reason he got married was to have a child (something two men can't do). Mayte almost gave him what he wanted but, unfortunately, not entirely, and was dumped shortly after. Mani didn't deliver either and she's gone. Maybe he's coming to the realization (partly) that women are mainly best in his life as friends. I'm not saying that's the way it is, I'm just merely wondering. Gay people have seen all kinds of situations and scenarios when it comes to having a family. I guess all the "defenders of Prince's straightness" will come out of the woodwork now to "defend his honor". . . [Edited 7/27/07 8:32am] Andy is a four letter word.

I know gay men who were really into the romance of women before they came out, just not the sex. My Legacy

I know gay men who were really into the romance of women before they came out, just not the sex. Very true. Men, whether in the straight or gay world, are whores. I can see the romance aspect of being with a woman mainly for companionship because it does get lonely sometimes and all these men want is sex, and then....next....they move on to the next guy. It would also be more fun to live with a girl than a guy because there would be a lot more in common. I'm not sitting and watching a damn boring ass football game with NO man. I've learned to be a whore just like them. Give me the dick and then take your tired ass home. I'll find me a woman to hang out and spend time with. Andy is a four letter word.

i have to say that although Prince's "smoove jams" are cheesy, i like them because of that
there is a similar quality about them that makes you wanna get busy with your lover but his "smoove jams" of late seem to be so cookie cutter and forced that they don't make me wanna get past first base with anyone

Fuck the corny title!
This song is masterpiece simply based on the vocal performance and melody alone. Some of Prince's most beautiful vocal work ever to my ears, with an instantly memorable melody that is embedded in your mind from the first listen. FBM rivals ANY R&B ballad in his entire catalog. Blasphemy you say. I am a fan of 25 years that doesn't accept every Prince song as pure genious, but I'm also not hater who absolutely refuses to acknowledge a great Prince song because it simply wasn't included on Parade or Sign of the Times. He is exactly who we thought he was

What does "gotta bend in the wind, but don't break" mean? I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

Trees or plants that can bend in strong winds are actually stronger than those that break at the same wind force. I personally feel it insinuates that "future baby mamas" might want to compromise (e.g. "bend") their values to get/keep a man in the hopes of being his baby mama. I really dislike this whole song because of the term 'future baby mama' and this line too. (See my reply/post #50.) [Edited 7/28/07 10:58am]

I think Prince very much wants a baby and maybe looking for a Future Baby Mama. He realizes marriage is not for him. Cinderella was a waste of time We hear you Prince!
I like this song, don't care for the title but like it. I don't think Prince is gay, if he was he would have come out by now. He is known to have dated the finest women around. [Edited 7/28/07 17:11pm]

perhaps i didn't pay attention 2 the lyrics closer upon 1st few listens, but now i think it's fucked up that he disses mayte in the song. is he blaming her 4 their child passing away? if so, that's what a future baby mama has 2 look 4ward 2... man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
