Okay, I must have a different version that the rest of ya'll, because nobody else has mentioned this. At the beginning and end of this song, there is a DJ and some chick on there talking. Just quit blabbering and get to the damn song already!!!!! lol lol

This song has a "Do Me Baby" vibe to it, I like it.

Are you talking about the recording of the track from when they played it on the radio station in Atlanta where the girl says "Fruture Baby Mama"?

Not sure, but I think so. nod
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I am surprised (especially at the musos here), that no-one has thought that this song in terms of movements and progressions, sound quite suspiciously close to "Have A Heart".

This is defo one of my fave cuts on the album but this sounds really really close 2 the aforementioned too.

Nice production, but this song is bland to me. It's perhaps my least favorite song on the album because of the recycled formula and the banal lyrics. It does sound pretty though- I'll give it that much.

Heard it for the first time, in the car, on the radio last Friday night. Turned it up and everybody got quiet. Real smooth and funky.

Aren't Prince's vocals just divine on this track . A couple of the other PE tracks , the way he sings gets in the way of my enjoyment of the song , but he's got it spot on with this one biggrin

This is better than "Girl", the all time classic Prince slow jam? hahaahhahahahaahahahhaha!!! biggrin That's comedy gold! This is a forgettable Prince song that would not have made any of his great 80's albums....perhaps a B-Side, perhaps not..

Future Baby Mama borrows elements from several classic Prince songs:

The drum programming is reminiscent of "When 2 R In Love" (kick drum pattern and sound) and "Crucial" (I believe this is what you're referring to about the percussion being "identical" to another Prince song - the tuned "percussion" sounds are used in both songs with a similar high-low pattern). The detuned side stick and open hat sound are found in innumerable 80s Prince songs as well.

The bridge borrows the melody from the bridge of "Thieves In The Temple" ("Cinderella was a waste of time" = "I can hang when you're around"... the melody, phrasing, and chords are identical).

The end of the chorus turns around on a three-chord "hook" that is similar -- but not quite identical -- to the three-chord "hook" at the end of the chorus from "Crucial."

All that to say, I don't mind the borrowing... I think the track sounds great, the production is really good (there's a good deal going on but it's not cluttered like so many recent productions he's made), and above all, it sounds so much warmer and more natural than many of his recent records. It's actually a pretty good melody and the phrasing and harmony in the chorus is great stuff. The lyrics are mostly banal and are the biggest drawback to the song, especially using the worst line of all as the title and chorus hook. It's too bad -- with better lyrics, I'd call this classic Prince. As it is... close, but no cigar.

Different strokes... I've always disliked "Girl," from the melody (or lack thereof), to the production, to the lackluster backing vocals. I hear very little redeeming about the track other than the slightly experimental recording... but to me, it's a failed experiment.

"Future Baby Mama," despite its lyrical flaws, is a much better song and recording. It's Prince following some of his old patterns, to be sure, but they were and still are some great patterns. I like this track.
