I think it's a bit early for this as it hasn't even come out yet, nor have any of us listened to it in decent quality.

it isn't neccessary to have a perfect sounding recording to hear whether you like the songs or not. heck, we all have shitty bootlegs that we love, so if you can like a song in bad quality you can also dislike it. saying otherwise is hypocritical and only an attempt to not admit to yourself that isn't good. what's next, unless you hear it in HD you can't judge whether it is good or not? just silly?
this message brought to you by logic.

The great thing about an iPod is that there is no longer a best or worst album.

There is only a perfect collection of songs.

No, Planet Earth, as i see it now will be "somewhere in the middle"

His truelly worst albums are:

1. The Rainbow Children
2. New Power Soul
3. Come
4. For You
5. Rave

And the ones who did put Diamonds and Pearls in their top 5, should think about a brain lobotomy wink

I mean: Together with The Gold Experience thats his best album from the nineties, and it belongs in every Prince album top-10.

Yes, i did put For You in there, because that album is very weak when it comes to the songwriting.

Do you remember any melodies from that album? (apart from soft and wet maybe)

It seems as though a lot of people didn't like D&P and NPS.

I thought those were 2 jamming albums.

When you think of D&P I think of:
Get Off
Cream
Insatiable
Diamonds and pearls

These 4 tracks alone are some of his best stuff ever!

I know you're being facetious re:D&P, but honestly I can only bear about 2-3 songs off of it.

TRC and Come top 5 worst....see I just can't see that.

IMO Emancipation was very personal for Prince and it was beautifully done. There are very few songs and that album that I didn't like.

Diamonds & Pearls to me was an album designed for the masses. Which is exactly what he's attempted with his last 3 albums. I don't believe Prince ever wrote an album for this purpose before D&P. His inclusion of rap (something he himself made fun of on the Black Album a few years earlier) was an obvious attempt at current relivency. IMO, this was the beginning of his decline as a writer since this material was meant for consumption and this was not the attitude he had the decade before. There are few "classic" songs everyone knows, but the overall album is poor.

5 Worst:

Rainbow Children
Gold
Symbol
Rave
New Power Soul

Emancipation is his best album since Lovesexy for me and finally a return to form. But that is 11 years ago now.... 3121 was a very good effort and better than Musicology but still not up to his mid 80's genius. I hope Planet Earth is another step forward, but based on "Guitar" probably not. That is the first Prince song I can remember hearing that I was bored during the first listen. Nothing exciting or new to hear on second or more listening is the problem. But this has been an issue for me on most of Prince's output over the past 10 years. Gone is the wonderful layering, multi track vocals and unusual arrangements and music that made up a Prince album. I will still be in line to pick this cd up later this month, I just hope that the rest of it sounds a lot better than "Guitar".

The Vault

LOL...a thread like this just exemplifies the widely varied tastes of "Prince fans". With an artist as musically diverse as P there will never be a consensus on his "best" and "worst" albums. It will always hinge on the ear and taste of the listener. Fans of P who are not also jazz/r&b enthusiasts will probably hate N.E.W.S., C-Note, X, TRC, Emancipation not to mention most of his Time stuff. Where as the r&b/jazz inclined will probably be lukewarm to his more pop/rock oriented efforts. The trick to digging P's music to me has always been having a well-rounded ear and an appreciation/grasp of music in general, in all its forms. That being said, PE is most definitely a mid-range P album for my tastes but i agree it does have some gems. I digest the gems and hope the rest will grow. And no way would i include D&P and NPS among his worst. Just my 2 cents as i bump NEWS and grin from pure delight.

I fear it might be based on the 2 songs I've heard in great quality, "Guitar" and "Future Baby Mama". I'll definitely reserve judgment until I hear the whole thing, though.

For now, here is my bottom 5:

1. Xpectation
2. Newpower Soul
3. Kamasutra
4. For You
5. The Truth

The great thing about Prince is that I adore songs on nearly every one of them!

ideation99, you say the past time you didn't buy a Prince album was in 1982, that would be '1999'; can I ask why you didn't buy this album? I haven't heard Planet Earth yet, but your comment re 1982's release intrigues me.

Most definitely sucks....I've been a Prince fan since Soft and Wet was getting radio airplay back in tha day...and I'm a true believer in the Minn. sound....but P aint put out an album worth listening to or buying since SOTT..I aint bought one or cared to listen to one since "Come"..the disappointment from that cd really did it for me....dont get me wrong cause I aint dissin' or hatin'.. but P has lost the hunger, the inspiration, the sound, and the desire..IMHO of course...
