Interesting thread. I don't think it's hurt him so much . Take The Most Beautiful Girl in the World..IMO the mose androgenous (sp) look to date. Yet that was a huge hit...here in the U.K at least. I think ppl seee beyond image. More so nowadays. If anything damaged Prince for a while it was the whole WB public fight/ 'slave' scrawlings/ covered head/ not speaking in interviews etc...
Nowadays I think ppl are realising just why it is Prince has attacked record industry and now giving him props.

"As you know, I'm androgynous. I can wear a jacket that most guys wouldn't put on. But you make it in guys' sizes, and suddenly they're wearing them. I think styles should get back to getting people to wear things that look so good that they don't care" - Steven Tyler
certainly didnt hurt his career! "Im Too Funky To Sleep With Myself"

It helped him in the beginning of his career because it made him outrageous and "outrageous" was definately in style. When the 1990s came around, the rediculous thug look took over. I wouldn't say that Prince's look hurt him during that era because those no taste dumb asses wouldn't have liked Prince anyway because he wasn't making boring stripped down slow shit hop music. Prince's real fans stuck with him and that's all the counts. Fuck the rest. Andy is a four letter word.

Prince has had a long illustrious career. Image only stretches so far.. Prince's career doesn't look like it needs a band aid. People who are saying it hurt his career are looking to low points which every artist is bound to experience. Also people not liking the way u dress have very little to do with a musical career in this case. Now if u said " Has being Androgynous helped or hurt Prince's popularity?" thats a different story... People are getting the two completely twisted. Prince still has a career after all these years. He's charging 3,121.00 dollars and somewhere people are paying it. Prince's career is not suffering by a long shot. sheesh

I agree with those who've said post-80s, androgyny has hurt Prince.
I LOVED all sorts of femme men in the 80s: Prince. Eldra Debarge . Stoney Jackson. . Those were the good old days. It was about blurring boundaries and definitions and many femme men were still ironically quite masculine and sexy. But now, for me, Prince is too soft. I get sickened by his femininity now. It's not balanced -- he's lost weight and the muscle definition he had in videos like When Doves Cry. During the 90s, it was fine. That was a time bridge. But now, even metrosexual is out. Manly men are in. I loved that BK commercial "I am Man" last year. That's what I'm talkin' about! Look everywhere. Butch is in! So with the weakass relaxed girly hair, thin lithe non-muscular frame, heels, makeup, feminine mannerisms, and seeming immaturity. It's just all too much. It's too much. There's nothing to counteract any of this weak bullshit. He just doesn't read: MAN to me and that's really disturbing and important for me in contemporary times. I think it's important to many female (and some male) fans. He's going to have a hard time pulling new fans (esp. younger generation) and keeping them. Sex appeal is a big part of an artist's profile. I think one of the most disgusting moments was during the Musicology concert when he actuallly did the Beyonce butt shake to 'Crazy in Love." You heard me. Prince shook his ass like Beyonce. In my female soul, I thought 'Something is wrong here. What the hell is going on! Dude, don't do that!" His sex appeal was over then and there for me. It was a sad moment. I can understand him admiring Beyonce's femininity but mimicking it! Ugh! In the 80s, hip hop was still sort of fringe and underground. When it became the dominant, popular, mainstream musical culture in the last decade... the male bravado and swagger at its heart sort of drove or at least merged with the social tone at large, in my opinion, and the result is there is no room for girly heterosexual men. He needs to eat. Work out. Get a more butch hair style and stop wearing corsets. Then I don't care about the heels and makeup. But he needs some masculine BALANCE. The GEmini scales have tilted "to the left to the left" and it's not a good thing!

He's always done that; Beyonce is not a factor. Interesting. Wow. I would NEVER say PRince is more masculine now than in his more muscular days. Look at the KISS video, even as he's twirling and singing high-pitch, he's got that killer upper body frame that makes that sexy to me as a woman. No. I haven't forgotten his past butt displaying fascination. I've been a fan, as a child, since 83. I even have the Revolution Live video where he asks "does the man have an ass like mine" on HCYDCallMe ... but it was different. Even that famous lacy ass display was more masculine to me. Beyonces uh-oh-uh-oh oh no-no dance -- which is what Prince was doing while having the band tribute to Crazy in Love -- is much more feminine and pandering to males than any prior Prince buttshakes. C'mon, do you really think women would get hot watching that? I guess I should be thankful he's never picked up that lame Atlanta men snap shit. That's the only thing that could be worse. Anyway, I'd really be interested in your identifying how Prince is more masculine now. Because I would love to perceive that, but I don't. And I want him to be. When I watch him perform, it's so stressful, I'm always thinking "please don't let him do something lame. Please Lord." Sadly, I see him becoming more and more like LIttle Richard, which is to say a visual joke. And part of that is because of his emasculation.

Sadly, I see him becoming more and more like LIttle Richard, which is to say a visual joke. And part of that is because of his emasculation. I see it in a variety of ways. He wears clothes now that, for the most part, could more easily be identified as being tailored for a man than ambiguous or obviously woman's clothing. His body language has shifted somewhat from more feminine mannerisms to more traditionally masculine ones. It's subtle things like the way he holds his head and sits and walks. There's less delicacy in his movements now than there used to be. I'm not sure why you're factoring his attractiveness or sexiness to women into the equation. Prince is not someone who's ever been attractive to most women. Period. Any degree of feminity in a man is too much for most women. Face it- those of us who like our men pretty are few and far between. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Women like Cher and Madge and Bette and Barbra aren't gay either, and they're embraced, though God only knows why.
my theory has always been that queer males wanted to BE these women. they're like uber divas and it seems that gay men who ARE feminine use them as a barometer and try to "out-female" them. i think Prince is despised by many in the gay community who DO hate him because they WANTED his "adrogynous look" to mean something ELSE so they could claim him as their OWN.

what u fail 2 understand is that PRINCE truly doesn't give a f**k about what people think.
-it is as it's alway been, u either get it & love it or u don't. it's that simple. i've found that those who didn't "get it" in the beginning were usually of the simple-minded sprt. these days, many of those same people have come 2 recognize his greatness because of his longevity. ever the simple-minded losers who have hopped on the his bandwagon claiming 2 have been down since the beginning. the same people who would NEVER be fans of his if he were gay. u see, his real fans are an elite, thinking type of folk. dain-daingerous

Through the years I have not known one gay man (or woman) that was really into Prince. As a matter of fact, one guy that I grew up with (and he was closeted in high school) proclaimed him "ugly". He also did admit that while Madonna was a pop star, Prince was more of an artist (this was after we watched the batdance video for the first time) My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

i thought gay people loved prince? HELL NO!!! You should hear what "Boy George" and "Elton John" said about the guy. Of course, according to the latter, who happens to commonly be easier to get along with (I mean this is the one gay guy that has respect for "Eminem"), "Prince" once walked up to him, stared for a noteworthy amount of time, then stormed-off in immature giggles. So, you do the math. "Prince" was a jerk to "Elton John". [Edited 7/10/07 12:15pm]

i thought gay people loved prince? Not one bit. My theory is the reason the gay community doesn't love him is the same reason, maybe ironically, that a lot of straight men don't love him: Prince has always gone out of his way to send mixed messages about his sexuality and gender, and that creates confusion. As much as a lot of queer folk like to think of themselves as more openminded than the hetero majority, the truth is that most have ideas about sex and sexuality just as strictly defined as the conservative, Bible-toting couple down the street.
