It helped him in the beginning of his career because it made him outrageous and "outrageous" was definately in style. When the 1990s came around, the rediculous thug look took over. Prince has had a long illustrious career. Image only stretches so far.. Prince's career doesn't look like it needs a band aid. People who are saying it hurt his career are looking to low points which every artist is bound to experience. Also people not liking the way u dress have very little to do with a musical career in this case. Now if u said " Has being Androgynous helped or hurt Prince's popularity?" thats a different story... He wears clothes now that, for the most part, could more easily be identified as being tailored for a man than ambiguous or obviously woman's clothing. His body language has shifted somewhat from more feminine mannerisms to more traditionally masculine ones. It's subtle things like the way he holds his head and sits and walks. There's less delicacy in his movements now than there used to be. I'm not sure why you're factoring his attractiveness or sexiness to women into the equation. Prince is not someone who's ever been attractive to most women. Period. Any degree of feminity in a man is too much for most women. i thought gay people loved prince? Not one bit. My theory is the reason the gay community doesn't love him is the same reason, maybe ironically, that a lot of straight men don't love him: Prince has always gone out of his way to send mixed messages about his sexuality and gender, and that creates confusion. As much as a lot of queer folk like to think of themselves as more openminded than the hetero majority, the truth is that most have ideas about sex and sexuality just as strictly defined as the conservative, Bible-toting couple down the street.
