The 1 U Wanna C (I know there's already a post called "new Prince song", but I think this song deserves a post with it's name in the subject.)
I want to call this a "hit song", but the fact remains as cool as I think it is, radio is on it's death bed and there's really no song Prince could write that would get airplay at pop or mainstream radio right now. That said, I like this song, so far, better than any pop/rock song he's done since Kiss or Little Red Corvette. I even like it more than "Let's Go Crazy" or "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". It's more complete and full sounding. He seems to have pulled off something I always felt he could, a pop/rock song that anyone could appreciate. One that could play in almost any setting. I even like this more than U Got The Look. Great song, great power, great voice. I'm past worrying about radio, this is like Fury from the studio, this is a great song and we don't have to say "if it only had the power of the live version", it's all right there! This is only after 20 listens and I suppose I could wake up tomorrow and realize I was just caught up in the moment, but that's actually the point, this song has me caught up in the moment again! That's a very cool thing, this is 2 fun! [Edited 6/30/07 0:36am]

Yeah i think it´s miles ahead of his latest pop rock efforts like so far so pleased, cinnamon girl, and fury. Fury is cool too but this is a lot more catchy. Prince is sounding kinda young in these new tracks, i think it was good for him stepping a little away from r&b e funk in the concept of the album (as i´ve read).
Maybe he was on a pop n rock mood after a long time and had some refreshing ideas.

I disagree with that. This is a radio song. So is FBM.

It's also very commercial (AD) friendly...just in case he goes that route. But outside of this, it's such a sing-along song. It will get airplay. Not because you want to dance to it, but because you just want to hear it. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

You have no idea what kind of wankers they are, they're spineless and out of touch. They honestly know only what they're told/paid to know. I met one just yesterday, trust me, I have more faith in YOU and I hardly know you... lol FBM is different, the Urban AC crowd is still old school cats. FBM can go top 3 in that format, no doubt. High hopes for what? Did you like it, that's all that matters. I'm finally on the "who gives a shit if it's a hit tip". I mean, come on, he's making some fine new music, that's all that matters.

Upon first encounter with either "FBM" or "The 1 U Wanna C" I certainly would not have been thrilled.
Only with time am I convinced that this stuff is touched with sickness. I don't know how sick yet, but get ready for a couple of new concert staples. I suspect that there will be plenty of time to get sick of them being played too much. And where is the 7 or 8 minute version of “The 1 U Wanna C”? I know that was bitch was recorded. Release it.

it sounds very "when u were mine"-ish to me. i'd be excited if this were an edit of a longer album version with more guitar/instrumental stuff happening.

Remember all the critics who said that Prince could no longer pen a melodic, catchy, hook-laden pop song anymore? It's always been interesting through the years to watch P's creative process. Maybe all the covers of classic hit songs in concert have served him well.
Writing a brilliant 3 minute piece of pop craft is a very difficult skill and Prince has always been one of the best.

adore it, sure he copies himself a bit[lol] BUT the hook, the tightness, the chorus, the simple lyric is all there i.e. classic P hit music. I just cannot wait to get this CD. This will be seen as either lightwieght OR a return to classic pop form amongst purple heads.

OMG -- you're right! I was sittin' here thinkin' ... Springsteen ... Mellencamp ... Adams ... hell, even Neil Diamond (Kentucky Woman). But it is totally WYWM. No wonder I like the new one -- WYWM is one of my favorite Prince songs ever. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think this would have to infiltrate multiple venues: Clubs/Bars, radio, MTV.
Ultimately, you really need DJs both on radio and in the clubs to dig this thing. I *do* think it's a great song. Instantly likeable, and it doesn't dull or flatten out the way some of his other "singles" of late have. But it's Prince. That has all sorts of baggage around it alone. He's at a point in his career where the media has embraced him with wild regard. But if you bring his name up in the office, it's a different story. Great song though.

i actually like this song much better than Guitar which kinda wore off for me. its very catchy and hooks me in, especially towards the end where he starts adlibing on the falsetto. I really enjoy this song.

Yeah this song is catchy as hell, I can't stop playin' it...
And "Future Baby Mama" is also one that I can play all day and not get tired... And "Guitar" and the demo version of it have both grown on me big-time. Planet Earth is looking more and more like it's gonna be one of the best Prince cd's in a loooong time. Hopefully a classic.

I have mixed feelings about this song, i must say.
I agree: its very catchy, and Prince sounds more energetic, more enjoying himself then he did on most material on 3121. But, on the other hand, the song alsom reminds me a LOT of the material Mutt Lange produced for his wife Shania Twain: cheesy, 'poppyfied' countryrock. It almost seems whenever Prince tries a song in this, country tinged Vein (So Far, so pleased, The Same december, and now this song) it always results in a a song that sounds like a parody, a campy take on country-rock, like he's taking the piss of the genre, instead of really feeling inspired by it. Artists like Wilco, John Mellencamp and the Jayhawks show you can do interesting, integer country-rock songs, but when Prince does this kind of material he often sounds like he is just 'abusing' the genre to create a campy, cheesy take on countrymusic.

And to react on the comparisons made here.
I indeed place it above Cinnamon girl, the album version of Fury, and So far, so pleased. But its certainly not in the quality range of more sober, integre efforts like When you were mine and I could never take the place of your man.

Umm, how can I hear this? I tried to "view" song but it didn't work. (thanks though) Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

It ain't gonna work if you try to "view" the song. I'm so tired of people begging and posting my links. It is absolutely crazy the amount of begging going on for a new song. The next time I get something I'm just going to share it with the 5 or 6 good people who I know I can trust. I'm so tired of people posting my links in public forums. It's just a new song, you'll hear it when you hear it. "Don't you think one of the charms of marriage is that it makes deception a necessity for both parties?"

Lame. Just goes to show you that you can't mention shit about new songs before people spoil it for everyone.
