The song is OK.

Not really gripping me, and not growing on me either...

I think it needed an interesting break or change somewhere in the song.

Not comparing, but if it had the type of breakdown that "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" has, it would work well.

The arrangement is a little thin... needs those big classic Prince synth parts somewhere.

I have mixed feelings about this song, i must say.

I agree: its very catchy, and Prince sounds more energetic, more enjoying himself then he did on most material on 3121.

But, on the other hand, the song alsom reminds me a LOT of the material Mutt Lange produced for his wife Shania Twain: cheesy, 'poppyfied' countryrock.

It almost seems whenever Prince tries a song in this, country tinged Vein (So Far, so pleased, The Same december, and now this song) it always results in a a song that sounds like a parody, a campy take on country-rock, like he's taking the piss of the genre, instead of really feeling inspired by it.

Artists like Wilco, John Mellencamp and the Jayhawks show you can do interesting, integer country-rock songs, but when Prince does this kind of material he often sounds like he is just 'abusing' the genre to create a campy, cheesy take on countrymusic.

I guess i like the song even more now, having read your comment. It makes sense! I see it as a very fun take on Shania-country rock. On the edge of camp and cheesy. But on the good side of the line.

I should add that I like his voice in this... not the lyrics, but the voice. Also, this is so obviously an edited "single version"... if this is the same on the album, he made a BIG mistake, as it could still have an interesting ending or breakdown before chorus before end...

I just heard it. It's gonna have to grow on me.Though I am so excited that radio stations are actually playing his new stuff. It's almost like the 80's again.Speaking of the 80's I saw today in a Chicago paper a small article about people from the 80's who seem to be making a buzz.Prince was one of them.

disapointed in the song

Future Baby Moma is a better song and speaks to me more personally. This one is a little too cute for me. Kinda like So Far Too Pleased. Also not enough bottom in it. I will say this again there is a place for this song on POP radio. Its very Gwen Stefani which in itself explains why I don't like it. Its just not my kinda song.

I actually think P is too damn old to make songs that sound like this....too light and too cute.

I do like it better than Guitar (either version) but what does tell you what I think about Guitar based on what I just said.

One day P is going to make an RB complete album in the vein of Maxwell Urban Hang Suite, I guess I'm going to have to wait

It ain't gonna work if you try to "view" the song. I'm so tired of people begging and posting my links. It is absolutely crazy the amount of begging going on for a new song. The next time I get something I'm just going to share it with the 5 or 6 good people who I know I can trust. I'm so tired of people posting my links in public forums. It's just a new song, you'll hear it when you hear it.

Thats so crazy! Who would have thought that mentioning a new Prince song on a Prince fan site called Prince.org would cause such a frenzy? lol

Gawd! whats wrong with these people??? You'd think they were Prince fans or something!

The 1 U wanna C is proof that Prince can easily write a great pop/rock song anytime he chooses.

If by great you mean a trite generic phoned in by the numbers guitar oriented track with pandering lame lyrics, then I guess it's a great song. Let's be honest any producer or any songwriter could have written this. In fact it sounds like a 4th rate tv show theme. All they need is the money to churn something out like this on the spot. There is the real truth. Frankly I don't see the difference now between Prince's brand of rock and something like Rob Thomas or BB Mak. It's all just praised because of the "name" \

And no it isn't proof he can write a great pop/rock song. However it is proof he can churn out factorized music when the engineer says "Roll Em" Sadly no...

Calling Toby Keith we finally have a crossover number for you to be on MTV. How generic can you get.

If you removed the vocals and said, "Heres the new one by Justin Timberlake or Andre 3000" Many Prince suck up's would be talking about how it wasn't that special and Prince could write something better. The Truth is this song is fodder. It's just fodder. And by that I mean I could go in any songwriter or boxers (Cubicle producers) in AOR Rock Dept and ask them to show me 100 just like this. And they would roll out Production CD demo after Production CD demo. It's so evident that P is just one of the factory pack now. The very thing that he fought so long to not be..

And you know another thing? Shania Twain probably has something like this on her upcoming new album called "The Man I want to Love" complete with even the pandering lyrics to boot and adlibs like "You know he's the man I want to love, baby"

Prince has become so plastic/hollow it's not even funny. I feel bad for a person desperate for attention and praise at every turn. Maybe as a bonus Japanese track he can add his cover of "Love Roller Coaster" I see no difference than people whining about what Usher or R Kelly or Timberlake does for attention than what Prince is doing.
What a lonely isolated stark place the stage must be. What a awful cruel lie to so many contemplating this road.

You are wrong. Its not somethingthat anyone could come up with. As a matter of fact its Princy, it does not sound like a generic pop rock track. The melody is beautiful, and the arrangments are not cliche. Only a master in songcraft could come up with a song like that.

There are thousands upon thousands of songwriters who write nearly identical stuff for tv cues or soundtracks to D Listed movies. I think I heard this song on a commercial for buying a Ford Pickup. Any veteran songwriter in the biz can probably show you a up tempo rocker like that he did many years ago just sitting collecting dust. That's not to say that Prince isn't extremely talented. But it's not really deserving of any praise or applause just because P did it. It's generic anyway you cut it. You'd like to see anyone "else" try it. Truthfully this song has been done a million times before. It's called a "AOR Rock" format. So your dare has already been challenged before Prince even had the guitar hook for this.

OK somebody can't read. I never said I dare someone else to do it, I said I'd hate to hear someone else try it. There is a big difference.. I believe there is some musician that thinks they can duplicate many a Prince songs, the problem is when they try, they come off sounding like they tried a Prince song. Thats the point I was making nothing more nothing less.

Some of you are so funny.

If you were told this tune was an outtake from SOTT, you would be like "wow, I wish Prince could still write som fun tunes like this one ! ".

It is so late revolutionish sounding.

No one else (and certainly not Shania Twain who is far from being the worst singer and entertainer out there btw) would place the bass like Prince on this tune. No one else would play this fun so typical Prince solo right in the middle. No one else would sing this fun falsetto line around the end.
I feel a strong w & l influence on this tune btw.

In fact, apart from Guitar, so far T1UWC and FBM sound like some outtakes from the 80's.

EXACTLY!!! Everyone hating on this song would be lapping it up if they thought it was part of the 80's output. It is as well crafted a pop song as Prince has ever done, but some people are too jaded and stuck in the past to admit. It is playful andquite unique in it's arrangement of funk bassline with country guitar. Some people just refuse to enjoy anything since SOTT.

That's cool though,,, they can stare through their crap-colored glasses all they want. Those of us with clear eyes (and ears) can enjoy while they once again huddle around their computers, waxing nostalgic about 20 years ago.
