If Arruh made this I would be stunned...and jealous as all hell that he did Prince better than Prince has done Prince in a minute.

I think its to 'sweet' and subdued to become a TOP 40-hit, but i think it will do well on the R&B charts and playlists.

Personally i think he has given this track 'out' to the radio-stations to attract R&B lovers towards Planet Earth.

Guitar is more aimed at the pop / rock market.

Based on the two songs i heard so far, and the reviews of Planet Earth i read, this new album is a mixed bag like 3121 was: a few R&B and funky tracks, some simple, direct rock songs and a few more experimental, 'weird' tracks. I happen to love songs in the last category, and i hope there will be a bit more of those on the album as on 3121.

If Guitar is the same version as the verizon commercial, I don't think that will chart to high on any format, POP top 40 is too weighed down in party rap, R&B kiddies rap and emo/dull rock for it to work. Plus as I hear it, Guitar is too wordy and nonsensical for heavy radio rotation, I doubt most people will find it catchy enough to sing a long to or remember the words.

I personally dont think Prince will score a bit single-hit with this album.

I feel the same as you about Guitar, and i dont see Future Baby Mama getting into the top 10 also.

Planet Earth will probably sell in the range of 3121, as a result of his 'fams' buying the album, and some extra exposure because of the concerts in London (and maybe Live Earth?).

But who am i... i mean: some people who have heard the album are saying that Chelsea Rodgers could be a BIG single. But look what happened to 3121: fans and critics pointed towards "Love" as a potential hit, but that was never released as a single.

If anything is a guarantee, at least 89% of this site's members will be first in line for the CD while others will wait until the next day, it will be interesting to read the reviews then, we will just wait and see.

Crap title, and song... If there's more of this on there, 3121 was the last Prince album I'll ever buy.

I wonder if the song will be an R&B hit only or cross over to Top 40.

Not that it matters, but if it's just an R&B hit, Prince has really come full circle.

I guess that simply means there'll be more for the rest of us.

The more I sit with this song, the more fault I find with it. The sound is 100% there, love his singing and the instrumentation.

But the melody and the lyrics are pretty much the definition of middle of the road. It was hard to see at first considering how great the sound is. At this point, I'm ranking it somewhere below Call My Name, but still significantly better than any of the crappy Rave era drek.

Only because I'm too lazy to repost what I said on Housequake, I'll just paste it.

If I so dare I will try to make an apt comparison. If you've heard Lionel Richie's most recent hit song I Call It Love , it was made for todays charts in its lightweight yet simple melody and contemporary style. It was a good song for the R & B charts and nice for him but it was nothing like his classic R & b songs that most are familiar with, and subsequently you don't hear more singles from his most recent album, they were good for the moment but easily forgettable.

Future Baby Mama is a good Prince song, it sounds contemporary enough for today's Adult R&B charts but it would never compare to his classic slow jams that are revered by fans. It's a fun song, and I do believe it will get heavy rotation on such stations but It doesn't have the staying power of earlier hits. If Robin Thicke's Lost Without You earned so much airplay these past months, I don't see why FBM couldn't get the same play. If anything it will remind the casual fan that Prince is still alive and making new music.

This will be big on the A/C Urban charts. Black people love P's ballads and that is the audience for this song. Sony is doing a good job so far. So don't be so sure about the failure of this CD. RnB charts count.

WTF? The version on 3121.com is taken from a radio station. Why not just upload the song from the album.

It says "bootleg" in parentheses, so maybe it's the Prince camp's way of making a commentary and undercutting the unoffical copies of this song that have been circulating since it hit radio.

Or maybe Prince didn't authorize the song for use on 3121.com and somone running the website is gonna lose their head when he finds out.

Listened to it.

It's a fine, if not spectacular, basic Prince song.

It will chart on the R&B charts.

I'd appreciate it if I were driving and it came on the radio. It would be good to listen to while doing something, or as part of a quiet mix as background music at a party.

But, I doubt I'd ever reach for it to listen to front and center.

I'm not expecting Prince to wow me at this point, though I remain hopeful. The Stones haven't wowed me with new material in almost 20 years, but I still love them. Prince too.

I keep getting it stuck in my head. If this is the least memorable song, according to the people at the listening parties in France and Germany, then that bodes well for the album.

For those of you who haven't heard this song yet, I've uploaded it on my MySpace page at: [Do not stream bootleg snip - luv4u]

I basically recorded it from streaming radio by putting one end of a patch cable in the headphone jack and the other in the line in jack of my laptop and hitting record when the song came on, so the sound isn't exactly stereo quality, but it's better than nothing.

And don't laugh at my lackluster Myspace page. smile I started it a while back and lost interest in it.

I'm loving this song. I've heard it like 20 times today. To me, it sounds like it could have been on the "1999" album...that's just my opinion though so please don't overanalyze that statement. But yeah, I'm totally digging it. In my opinion it's not the type of song that's gonna be the crown jewel of the album or anything, but it's real easy on the ears and it's the type of song you can play over and over again and not get tired of it. Definitely has the classic Prince sound of his greatest ballads from the past. Between "Future Baby Mama" and "Guitar" and the fact that "insiders" keep saying the album has a more rock vibe, I'm more excited for this Prince album than I have been for any in a real long time. It sounds like it's gonna be the bomb.

Yes, I was feeling a 1999 vibe from this . International Lover , maybe?

its in a leauge of its own though definitely..its hot

nice song and it grows on you....I do hear some old philly soul buts its Prince meets philly soul. Its kind of quirky but not over the top and shocking as 80s Prince

Its nice...going on my 5th listen now....this will clearly be played on RB radio....definately will be loved by neosoul and adult contemporary lovers

good job P....as for guitar I heard the whole thing and the lyrics are so clumbsy. No way that song is a hit on any format. Its an albumn cut no more no less

I'll just cut and paste the message I posted from another thread, apologies.

Heard it for the 1st time.
True, it does feel like "When 2 R In Love"
But the torrid eroticism of the young adult Prince is now supplanted with his middle-age calm. I don't mean to sound negative though. Take it or leave it, this is the sound of Prince thinking loud as a man who has passed 40. You can actually hear his contentment through the lilting (and thoroughly infectious) melody of the verses (Chaka and Rufus's Sweet Thing might have been an inspiration for this song). It is however the song that comes closest to the best of his 80's ballads. The instrumentation (Linn and bass parts), at least, points to that direction, and not the 90's as previously noted. And one of his best vocals in a while. It may be the best one sung in falsetto since Journey to the Center of your Heart. His trademark harmonies which harken back to that first track from his first album are especially more evident here than with most of his recent R & B output. A lot of us prefer his more adventurous side, his unpredictable tendencies and (sometimes) excesses, but this is short and sweet Prince with just about everything in their right place. And it does deliver.

And thankfully the spoken parts are not "rapped".
This is not space-age electronic (and badly produced) or JB funkified (with synthetic horns) or anemic pop-rock (and Watchtower peddling) or impostured hip-hop (and ridiculous "rapping") or Stax-influenced (or coitus interruptus) or Latin-tinged (or lame excuse to use Sheila) Prince.
It's just good old Prince, period.

And it is a thousand times better than Guitar which sounds so much like 3121's Fury, albeit a dumbed-down version of it. Guitar is one of those rare instances in Prince's already mixed bag of a catalogue when the instrumentation doesn't seem to jive with the vocals. The "turn it up" part before the guitar solo sounds so undeserving of the fireworks that follow it. Why does he even use this little but not quite Camille voice of his? In my opinion, Guitar and Future Baby Mama are on two opposite extremes in the vocal department. The former being the worst and the latter being the best in a long time.
