Well, my family is from the Dominican Republic and I will tell you that before I became a fan, they did not know who he was. I'm going to say it depends on how Americanized the country is.

I have a friend going to school in Guadalajera, Mexico. Since he has been down there, he has not heard Prince one time. Besides American rap, he really doesn't hear too much American music period.

Unfortunately, he is not very well known and/or properly respected in most Latin American and South American countries. This may have 2 do with whatever promotion did or didn't happen there, and/or his tour history in Central/South America.

I have had close friends from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Brasil, Uruguay, Panama, etc, and it seemed like hardly any of them had any idea of Prince's talents, even.

I have always been somewhat surprised at this, but not when considering basic factors, such as WB promotion and tour history.

I agree. There is not that much promotion going on in Latin America. Also, these countries are not exposed to all the genres that we know. For example,in DR, it is all about merengue, merengue tipico, bachata, salsa, boleros, and that's about it.Someone like Prince is not going to easily accepted because he is so different from what they are accustomed to.

When I was living in Spain I met two people who were crazy about Prince, one of them owned a little music shop and he was 'always' pumping out Prince and had loads of bootlegs. I guess he was as popular there as he would be in Britain.

Yeah, well Spain is one country in Europe, where his promotion and touring history have been more prominent.

The thread title says "the Spanish speaking world", which is about as general as it gets.

So U must look at Spain as being about 2% of the "spanish speaking world".

I have some coworkers from Colombia, and they really only know him from his eighties stuff (i.e. PR). However, I was told that Te Amo Corazon was played on some of the stations in Colombia. I checked the Colombian singles chart and found that TAC peaked in the mid 50’s on the top 100 chart. It was on the chart for about 12 weeks over the summer and early fall.

Recuerdo haber escuchado Little Red Corevette, 1999, Delirious. Let's Pretend We're Married, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star, Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, America, Kiss, Sign O The Times, U Got The Look, Alphabet Street y Batdance.

Not many of the mexicans I know are familiar with Prince unless they grew up in the US in the 80's...someone mentioned the lack of promotion/touring in latin american countries and this was one of my worries since I was considering moving to Puerto Rico this year...especially since living in the San Francisco bay area I am so spoiled by P (such as the Orpheum show I just saw razz )....I don't think I could handle living in PR without my Prince fam and no Prince shows sad
