FunkyMan

I can't help it - I have to vent. That was up there with the WORST Grammys I have ever seen. It was basically an insult to music and musicians! And it had NOTHING to do with Prince losing... Here are some of my many gripes:

1) The Police reunite after 25 years and get ONE SONG??? And then Carrie Underwood and Rascall Flatts get 3 songs?? Justin Timberlake gets 2.5 songs?? WHAT THE F----?

2) Why the heck are the Grammys becoming American Idol Jr? Watched the Red Carpet beforehand and 1/2 the people interviewed by Ryan Seacrest (AI) are from AI! Then this CRAP with the 'Vote on the best unknown singer that no-one cares about' probably took up 15 minutes of the broadcast - ADD 15 MINUTES TO THE POLICE!!!

3) CHRISTINA AGUILERA DOES THE JAMES BROWN TRIBUTE????? The girl can sing but could you please pick an artist least impacted by JB? She wasn't even born when he made his biggest impact! They couldn't come up with a better tribute than a symbolic cape on a mic? I was YELLING at the TV by this point!

4) My only major AWARD gripe - you have 3 of the best singer-songwriters in years in Best New Artist (James Blunt, Corinne Bailey Rae and Imogen Heap) and you give the award to CARRIE UNDERWOOD?

5) What the f--- is Chris Brown doing on the same stage as Smokey Robinson and Lionel Richie??? That was an insult to the two of them! Why not have John Legend or another quality R&B artist up there??

Were there positives? Sure... a few:
1) Prince was classy in losing
2) Justin Timberlake was actually decent
3) THE POLICE!!!

Sorry to vent!....

Did The Police open? How were they? I'm in CA, so have to wait 'til 8.

yes, and I thought they were great! very exciting to see them together smile

The Police.. wow. I thought Stuart Copeland was amazing. Dayum he's a great percussionist. No wonder he and Sting had some issues. I would imagine it might be clash of the egos. SC wow. I also loved seeing Chad Smith playing drums for the Dixie Chicks.

I thought it was a great show. John Mayer blew me away. I'm so glad he beat Justin. Justin... I tell ya...It's like he's trying too hard to be a musician or something...

It's great to see so many people appreciating the Police! I was actually a bit worried for them, but thought they did great!!

These are strange times for me, Prince & the Police were my greatest favorites back in the 80s... last Sunday I had my alarm clock on at 02.30 am as the Super Bowl was for whatever reason broadcast live (though nobody up here in northern Europe is really interested), so I saw Prince do his thing! Now the Grammies haven't been on TV yet here at all, but I bet I would have stayed up for that too had it been on live at some unseemly hour.
And I just turned 40 years of age cool

Honestly I like Jistin's record but I laughed out loud when in the last set he was acting like he could play the guitar. My wife asked why are you laughing? I couldn't stop. Again I like the guys music and I even think I understand where hes tryig to go....but dude...put the guitar down

That was Tamar. He toured with her last year and introduced her as his new protege. They finished the tour sometime in May of June of 2006, and is a solo artist on her own with an album that will be out soon. She was there because she was nominated with Prince for their song "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" that she co-wrote with him.

That was her? WOW...I didn't recognize her. Yeah, I remember her. What happened to her? You don't see her or hear much about her anymore. He's probably somewhere now hosting an afterparty!! We should be there.

She is working as a solo artist and recently worked with a producer named Kwame on her new album.. She has a new album coming out (dont'know when) but it's supposed to be called "World Premiere". She has a myspace page with a couple of songs on there including "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" www.myspace.com/tamardavis and a new website "tamardavis.net". Although she didn't win the grammy at least she was nominated and that's a good thing.

Now to my mini-rant - I NEVER watch award shows unless Prince is performing. I don't care if he is nominated for awards, because I don't care about awards as they have never been an indicator of talent.

My biggest problem with the Grammys and the news coverage I've seen this morning is that they are actually trying to make folks believe that craptastic non-talents are artists and that that was great show.

This morning on Headline News the reporter kept raving about the show and said JT, Christina and Mary brought the house down with amazing performances. Huh? Why has screaming become synonymous with singing? I like Mary, but come on. That was not a great performance.

That final JT performance looked like high school talent show, and the first one was nothing to write home about either. Even with some of Prince's former band members he sounded like crap. That guitar prop was hilarious. He looked awkward and goofy trying to fashion himself as a musician. I found it hilarious that both when he "played" piano and guitar there was another musician playing the same instrument behind him. The sad thing is that the ill informed will now call JT a guitarist.

It was obvious that the Grammys were trying to promote the younger people in the music industry, but the problem is that the vast majority of these folks are minimally talented at best. They are not carrying on the musical legacy of people like James Brown, whose tribute was an insult. Chris Brown should have done some research. MJ was influenced by James, but he is not James! You can't pay tribute to James by dancing like MJ, even down to the hat toss. He should have studied that clip and done JB's moves step for step like Gregory Hines did for the Bojangles film. That would have been impressive.

Christina actually has a nice voice and it is sad that she has fallen into the screaming as singing camp. She needs a vocal coach or someone to help her better use her voice.

Finally, as some of you have pointed out, I was VERY disappointed that the Police only got one song! What's up with that? They were arguably the most talented self-contained act on the stage last night and all they got was one song? That was like a warm-up. That Eagles tribute lasted forever, as did the Corrine, John & John performance.

Last night the Grammys were a glaring reminder of why I do not watch award shows. The awards have always been a joke, but at one time at least the performances were good. Not anymore. There was more talent sitting in the audience than performing on stage!
What a shame.
