I thought he pretty much rocked it. I'm always ready to be bored by the old songs, and then he just rips into them. And, I'm sorry, that DylanFoo thing is a billion times better than "Guitar."

he's probably the first SB-performer who gets away with covers.....
People, please refrain from butchering a Foo Fighter song with Prince-bonics, it is called 'The Best Of You'..... It was an ok-performance, maybe I'm spoiled.....

Ex-Moderator | I love love loved the stage.
Loved it. The camera people should have been more prepared for the rain. They couldn't keep a camera dry and it was annoying me. I, like Sammi, was hoping to see a twin slip and fall. But I think the rain helped keep them in check a little. He really needs to ditch them. Pronto. Real music by real musicians, then why does he need their annoying selves? The doves made me giggle. The crazy noise he made in Let's Go Crazy made the entire room of people I was with laugh. My friend's son (who is only a year and a half) began singing along at the end of purple rain and I thought I was gonna die from the cuteness. Another fan is born. Overall, yay Prince! I enjoyed it very much. |

A+ To perform that well in the pouring rain!! Those guitar strings had to be slippery & Not missing a note and not singing out of key. Amazing! Go right now pick up a guitar and play in your shower and not miss a note & sing perfectly while water is pelting you everywhere.

coolcat said: I thought the performance was alright... I didn't like how that guitar sounded... too much distortion... just too noisy I thought...
Yes, I thought there was a little too much reverb at some points, too. I wonder if any of it had to do with the weather... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I just was so proud of Prince and thought regardless of what anyone thinks of Prince, if he can get a crowd filled with testosterone singing to Purple Rain, it just truly shows what a musical legend and genious Prince truly is. IMHO of course.
my sentiments exactly. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

He made the Stones seem comatose.
Great guitar work, especially in the rain. His voice was particularly clear and strong. No major mistakes and he played the hell out of his guitar! Thank god he *didn't* play "Guitar". I guess people expected the Purple Rain songs, but I would have loved to hear something else from his catalog...But this wasn't a Prince concert, it is the Superbowl halftime show. Nice job, Mr. Nelson! Some people tell me I've got great legs...

Classic.
Not necessarily a performance for the hardcore fan, but perfect for a broad audience like the Superbowl. Yeah the twins are the new Larry Graham around here, but they didn't take away from him throwing it down tonight. "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

It was fun. The stage and pyro were great.
It didn't really get going until Best Of You, Let's Go Crazy is starting to sound really haggered. I think performing Purple Rain, in the rain, should get him a few lines in the tabloids tomorrow.

Loved the setlist but I don't really understand the choice to do covers, the stage was alright it could have been something simple & I'd love it, the pyro, the outfits, and even the twinz... they just need space so it doesn't look crowded.
AND HE DID IT ALL IN THE RAIN [Edited 2/4/07 18:32pm]

This performance was exactly what I expected-except for the rain. I was legitimately concerned that dude was gonna slip in his heels, or have his mascara run. Prince is unflappable and the rain just made it more legendary.
That being said--odd that they didn't plan for rain whatsoever. How does Prince grab high voltage guitars, mic stands and not get shocked? "New Power slide...."

I think to get a performance out like that in those weather conditions is a testament to the professionalism (and talent) of Prince and his band.
But he did appear tense for LGC certainly, and the guitar work seemed a little rushed throughout (like Fury at the BRITS as opposed to the performance of it on SNL), not quite up to the standard we know he's capable of. Nice to see him throw in some covers there to mix it up a bit - although only PR album originals (1999 riff excepted) - another big hit from another time in his career would be nice for these big shows (like the Grammies and Brits). That's a lot of songs to squeeze into such a short time. And damnit, I wanted to see him throw his guitar away at the end! I'm guessing that scarf went on his head because of the rain - but it looked like it was coming apart - a brave move to just throw it off near the end. Has anybody seen Prince's hair less styled than during Purple Rain?

Also I think it was cool to have Shelby there because her voice was strong and he didn't have to worry about having back up singers or the twinz mouthing in the background or sharing his mic. Shelby wasn't for show, she was for sound and I dug that.

Prince RIPPED IT, plain and simple. All you haters trying to down the man, should step off. For a mainstream performance like this, the man isn't going to get up there and play something obscure that most people wouldn't know, so get off his back!

You can bet that they planned for rain - that's why his suit wasn't dripping, his makeup didn't run, he didn't get electrocuted, and he didn't slip. Great show BTW Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.
