I've grew up liking MJ as a lil kid. He was around before the public ever heard of Prince. That's 2 easy of a question.

I have always considered Prince as a "cult" artist. He appeals to a certain audience and that's it. However, because of his desire to be more accepted by mainstream audiences, he is becoming more well-known. On the other hand, Michael Jackson has ALWAYS been an artist that EVERYONE and their "mama" knows. Whether that is good or bad depends on the people who want to turn everything that he does into something negative. He is the ONLY artist who has lasted as long as he has and STILL garners worldwide attention. He is the only artist who has gone from being a child star, lead singer of one of the most popular music groups in history, to becoming virtually the biggest entertainer in history. Even with non-stop negativity thrown at him, this man CONTINUES to stand up and resurrect himself. If anyone in the world could give up this man could. Yet, he continues to show class, grace, strength, humility, kindness and resolve.I don't know of any artist in history who has gone through, and continues to go through, what this man has and doesn't give up. I commend, respect, support and love him for his courage. There is no other artist who could EVER take his place, in MY book.

I hear that and agree on some levels but let's be honest here. 99% of Mj's problems have been self inflicted.

Loved Purple Rain, the movie and album. I am one of those people who even went to see "Under The Cherry Moon" and really enjoyed it and the soundtrack. However, the difference is that I was never into Prince as a "person". I never found him sexy, as I did Michael. I didn't like his arrogant persona. That didn't stop me from enjoying such albums as I mentioned before and subsequent albums-Sign Of the Times. I became completely turned off by the horrendous movie and album"Graffitti Bridge". Prince was at his worse, imo, with that movie. He was never a really good actor, even in Purple Rain Morris Day was the person who carried that movie.

I still haven't found out if Prince fans are as involved with HIM as a person as Michael's fans are with HIM as a person. We are happy when Michael is happy. We felt the hurt of the false allegations against him because we KNEW that the kid was lying. We followed every aspect, every timeline, every court transcript, every court filings. We knew the background of all of the "players" involved in the scam. That's just how involved Michael's fans are with him. We love HIM, we love his music. We know that he is human and makes mistakes like all of us do. We also know when he has been framed for something that he didn't do. Sorry about going off in this direction, but I am just relaying WHY Michael fans are so passionate about HIM and his music. FTR, there are many MJ fans who are also Prince fans. I like a lot of Prince's music, repsect his artistry, but am not a fan.

Becoming well known???...LOL....The thing with Prince is he's always had one foot in cult artist land and the other in mega superstar land...It's always been that way...he's a guy that can have the no. 1 tour in the country (superstar) and then go gold with a new album (cult)....

I myself was a huge MJ fan...Loved the J5; The Jacksons albums; Off The Wall; and Thriller...I went to what I still believe is MJ's best stage show still today, the Triumph tour...Most Prince fans, started off as Michael Jackson fans...That's just the truth...I think MJ stood has a gateway artist for many music fans were coming of age and looking for a sound and an artist that was more sophisticated...And that artist was Prince....Back then Prince was an rebel who happened to sale a lot of records...You could play MJ in front of mom and dad; you had to be careful of playing Prince...But anyone who says MJ wasn't a big part of their life in the late 70s and early '80s, I find that highly unlikely...lol

I agree. I have all those Jacksons' 45s from when I was a little girl, had a crush on JACKIE Jackson, and was soooo into Thriller. Then I don't know what the hell happened. disbelief

Yes, I do...
For one thing, I think I outgrew that larger-than-life thing that MJ became. It used to make me sick to watch girls crying and fainting on TV. (for the record, I hate that shit at Prince concerts, too! eek) His image just disappointed me.
When I discovered Prince in college, it was about music, not image- it was after "Purple Rain", so I wasn't into that whole thing. music

Not me! My mom liked MJ's music, but it never did do anything for me. I was into the pop music scene until 100.7FM kiss played r&b along w/ hip-hop, then rock. There goes that station as it is today playing whatever we like or don't like at times.

I respect Prince's musicianship and like a lot of his older songs. However, I haven't heard a single song in recent years that has done anything for me.

That is exactly what turned me off, but for maybe a different reason. By the time '84 rolled around, I had exhausted myself being obsessed with MJ, only to notice that the rest of the world was obsessed with him too. Before then MJ was big, but not THIS big. And I'm afraid he became too big for me. It was also a fanboy thing for me, as I felt like I didn't want to share MJ with all the screaming girls on tv.

It was also Prince's rudeboy image that turned me on. Back then, MJ was the corny, sweet good guy, the guy you could take home to meet your parents. But you did NOT want to take Prince home. Case closed. lol

im still a huge MJ fan but i dig prince alot now cuz its exciting on many levels
you get two /three bursts into the excitment
one is discovering his albums and videos
and the other is discovering bootlegs and concerts { everyone is so DL about boots here once you figure out where you can get it and how its an immediate eargasm}
so i like prince alot cuz there is always something new to listen to

mike has alot of material too {counting his J5/MOTOWN SOLO ALBUMS and outtakes, as many forget to do} but ive spent my entire life with that.

prince is just a new alternative for me

i feel exactly the same way

I agree that Prince is a smaller, nastier version of Michael Jackson. Maybe that's why I liked him as a kid, but I respect Prince as the man without (too much) comparison to Michael now. LOL.

That's me right here. As a kid, I LOVED Thriller. Mom had the album and I played it all the time. I discovered P the same year and thought he was weird but I liked 1999, the song. The next year, I loved When Doves Cry and I became a Prince fan but I was more about MJ. I always saw MJ being more for the kids and Prince being more for the adults but even at 5, I was down with P. Plus Mom didn't get me a Prince album till I was 7. I'm not lying when I tell you that I felt I had won the lottery when Mom got me Parade, lol

Earlier tonight, without knowing about this thread, I was thinking back to why I stopped being a hardcore MJ fan and why I became a hardcore Prince fan and I think it has to do with the output of music Prince released. There were 4 years of no new music from Michael between Bad and Dangerous and every year between 1988, MJ's last single, I think and 1991 when Black or White came out, Prince had a new album out and a new song on the radio and that impressed me, add to the fact that I loved what I heard too. When MJ came back and called himself "The King of Pop" that really turned me off. I was still discovering new Prince music and my thought was Prince comes out with something new all the time and even though it may hit the Top 10, he gets little to no praise while this dude comes out not releasing anything in God knows how long and now I'm expected to call him the King of WHAT?! HELL NO. That was the beginning of the end for me with MJ and the start of me being all about Prince (even though I enjoyed Dangerous). The child molestation charges, the weird behavior and lackluster music afterwards was what sealed to the deal for me to stop being a Michael Jackson fan altogether sad .

I've balanced it out now and even though I don't call myself an MJ fan anymore, I love the old stuff and I even pick up the new music as a collectors items because of all that the music that MJ did from 1979 to 1991 meant to me. And Prince, well, I'm still here after 22 years and I'm not going anywhere.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm not trying to dog you and it's good to have you here but I am just curious as to what brings you here. smile

I did, although I was never a huge MJ fan. My older bro loved him and I got caught up in the whole Thriller thing (I was young!). Then my brother mentioned this Prince guy who was a rival to MJ, which I have to say disturbed me at the time, so I decided that I hated Prince. not long after my brother sat me down to watch a pirate copy of Purple Rain and I've been a massive fan ever since.

I still listen to Mj's OTW, which is a fun album but none of his music meant anything to me - he's just a fun pop star who could have done so much more but decided that number ones were more important - a shame, but I wasn't crying because we had Prince who was so much more everything, except commercial.

I started out as MJ fan and now I'm fan of both, but music-wise Prince wins for me. I really hate the fact that it takes ages for MJ to release a next album.
Maybe that's the reason why I got into Prince around 2002. I was very much impressed back then when I found out he already released 24 official albums, + all the internet and side projects releases, I couldn't believe it!
It was a great journey to buy all the albums and listen to them, some I liked from the start some a couple of years later. I wish I could do it again!
I still would buy every MJ release though.
