How Many of You Started Out As MJ Fans and Ended Up As P Fans?

Alright, I know alot of you are out there. The kids who started out jamming to "Thriller" and ended up being soaked by a "Purple Rain".

I'll admit, I fell into Prince around the same time as I did Michael Jackson, but for some reason I stuck to Michael harder. Probably because my mom thought Prince was a midget with a dirty mouth and all Michael did was fondle his privates. (Go figure.) I got into Michael when I was 9 and I am still a fan and I'm 20 now. But I noticed that whenever I heard Prince wasn't going to be on TV, I was compelled to watch him and I did. So I was kind of undercover about P. But I knew the words to many of his songs--and I still don't know hw I knew them when I didn't own anything of his!

The only way I can explain it is that Prince appealed to the raw side of me. The sexual dirty side. How dirty has Michael Jackson gotten. He won't even say fuck. He'll spell out the word rather than say it!

But I like both of them. I'm sure because I dropped over a hundred dollars on an MJ music collection and then a week later picked up 2 Prince items!

Well everyone, tell your stories.

Me

MJ could do no wrong during the Thriller years.
I fucking loved the guy.

Then Purple Rain dropped, and I dropped MJ like a bad habit. lol
I never rediscovered my love of MJ's music after that becuase each MJ release after Thriller got more and more self-aggrandizing, and less spectacular, and each Prince album up until the 90s got more and more intriguing.

im still a huge MJ fan but i dig prince alot now cuz its exciting on many levels
you get two /three bursts into the excitment
one is discovering his albums and videos
and the other is discovering bootlegs and concerts { everyone is so DL about boots here once you figure out where you can get it and how its an immediate eargasm}
so i like prince alot cuz there is always something new to listen to

mike has alot of material too {counting his J5/MOTOWN SOLO ALBUMS and outtakes, as many forget to do} but ive spent my entire life with that.

prince is just a new alternative for me

I was a HUGE Michael Jackson fan up to and including Thriller. Then 1999 (the album) came out and I liked both. But when Purple Rain came out, it was all over.

Looking back, I think I liked MJ because everyone else did (I was about 11 years old when Thriller came out) but when 1999/Purple Rain came out I loved it on my own.

I love annoying the shit out of my mom by making her watch Prince and MJ videos.

My faves to annoy her with--

"Dirty Mind" Prince in his manties. (And Gett Off with the assless pants!)
"You Are Not Alone" Michael in the nude.

The problem is you need more Americans or Dutch folks.

I was always pretty ambivalent towards both of them. I always just thought Prince was the mini, perverted version of MJ.

I would much rather seeing MJ in the nude on YANA, than watching Prince in the assless pants in Gett Off and the panties in Dirty Mind. The worse for me was seeing Prince nude on the cover of Love Sexy. It was a complete turn-off. He looked totally feminine. There was nothing sexy about him,IMO.Of course, I have always preferred MJ over Prince. Not only am I a fan of MJ's music, I am a fan of him as a person, and I think that he is sexy as hell. There is just something about him that is a complete turn-on. I respect Prince's musicianship and like a lot of his older songs. However, I haven't heard a single song in recent years that has done anything for me.

I started out with MJ during Thriller, I had heard Prince 1999 and liked the song, but it wasn't till Purple Rain that prince won me over from MJ.

MJ lost me the first time he got his nose fixed. He looked normal on the cover of Off The Wall and then completely lost it.

I was never really an MJ fan, anyway. Before Prince, I was listening to new wave -- The Knack, The B-52s, The Cars, Talking Heads, etc. I loooooved Dirty Mind with its combination of new wave and funk. Controversy and 1999 continued that, though to a lesser degree.

Me! In fact I think it was reading about the magic and the madness (MJ's biography) that made me really want to see Purple Rain. I got the soundtrack before that and fell in love EVERY song on there. Which made me dream of seeing the movie even more. So I asked my mom if we could rent it and she said YES! I remember studing the VHS box at the movie store..it had one picture of Prince in preformance and one of Apollonia about to kiss him. It looked really mysterious, and exciting and adult and I wanted to know about it! So then I saw the movie and I fell in love with Prince. I always liked some of his songs on the radio and my mom liked his music but I really had not known how sexy and unique he was untill I saw the movie. In fact alot of Prince's songs I didn't even understand it was him I just happened to like the songs on the radio.

So after that MJ seemed really chessy and childish to me. I still liked some of his stuff but my crush for him was squashed with my new Prince one.

Never an MJ "fan". Loved OTW and every1 was into Thriller when I was 12-13, but that made it less attractive - how can it be "your" thing when it's everybody's including mindless and tasteless losers? I loved 1999 and kinda knew Controversy, but I guess u couldn't really call me a "fan" until after PR. Actualy, it would probably b more accurate to put it down to ATWIAD - every1 was into PR, but only the fans got in2 ATWIAD!
MJ was just this thing you had around you all the time in the 80s, which got annoying late into the Thriller phenomenon, and became unbearably irritating from Bad onwards.
Prince, on the other hand, wavered between interesting, intriguing and fascinating.

I've grew up liking MJ as a lil kid. He was around before the public ever heard of Prince. That's 2 easy of a question.
