If not Batman, then Controversy. Controversy is not totally essential in terms of growth, and it's not as consistant as Dirty Mind or 1999.

But it's got at least 3 great songs in the title track, Sexuality, & Let's Work that I'd hate to lose.

My sentiments exactly. I just could not live without Contorversy. It's the quintessential Prince song. And that beat. Good god.

well I have to pick, don't I (and I really only love 3 songs on it)? And I really choose Batman, but some say that's too easy.

Have you picked yet?

I'm still deciding since I dont want to cheat and pick Batman. It "may" have to be Dirty Mind but Im having difficulty that even though I rarely play it, it is the seminal Prince record. Where he became the FreakPrince we now know. Can I live without When You Were Mine?

Sign o' the Times. Hear me out. I love that album more than several from the 80s, but I feel that the songs would have been unearthed eventually on a Crystal Ball-type release. Either that, or the bootlegged songs (and you know they would be) would generate such a furor among fans that the floodgates would open to a whole load of unreleased stuff. headbang

This is a very easy question. "Parade" is the absolute worst Prince album of the 1980s but it's not the one I would delete. I'm looking at the bigger picture and I would delete the one that got Prince at the point that he could afford to change his style in 1985....."Purple Rain".

As much I love the "Purple Rain" album, it would probably be better to delete it. Without the pop and European audience that Prince gained with "Purple Rain" and also the millions of dollars he made, there probably would have never been a "Parade"....or "Around The World In A Day", "Lovesexy", or even the org's overrated "Sign O The 60s" album. Without "Purple Rain", Prince would have either had to continue with the type of music he had been famous for years on R&B radio earlier, or starve to death if he switched styles. The cold "old Prince" would have probably continued for the rest of the 1980s instead of the overly extreme diverse "reincarnated Beatles, James Brown, and Lawrence Welk" Prince.

I understand where you are coming form and agre with it (Prince changed his sound and performance with Purple Rain's reach out for mass appeal). But that would mean you couldn't hear PR songs ever again, nt that it would be erased and change his release history.

I know what you mean but, without that style change in 1985, who knows...he might have made something better than "Purple Rain". I would gladly risk it to have had more "old Prince".

It's a tough question (excluding Batman imo). I prefer Controversy to Dirty Mind (the songs) and Let's Work to Head, but I prefer Dirty Mind (the album) as a whole.

Which would've made him as boring and forgettable in the end as all those other 80's artists we're no longer talking about.

I'd ditch Dirty Mind in an instant. The only thing I'd miss would be live versions of when you were mine. But there's plenty more I'd miss on the other albums.

In fact if I had to delete one album from his entire catalogue it would still be Dirty Mind.
