hmmm Not sure this can be quantified. Art is subjective.

For me, it speaks to the swirl of futility, lament and (most important) faith inside me.

Musically, it's classic early '80s Prince: Angsty lyrics, Linn drum, keyboard, slightly dissonant backing vocals. And the memorable, almost anthem-like refrain is hopeful, yet not as "churchy" as 1999's Free, which supposedly replaced Moonbeam Levels.

I find it to be oversaturated and kinda shmaltzy. I don't get the hype it has with the fans. Then again, not everyone likes All My Dreams either, and I think that's genius.

Some of Princes songs are only considered great because they are unreleased.

I've never heard it. sad Sometimes I'll hear people hyping unreleased tracks, and when I finally hear it, my expectations are too high and I am left feeling disappointed.

I wonder about that with this song. I'm sure alot people genuinely love it, but for me, it's a good song, but not that great.

don't question the gotdamned classics, maaaaan! that's like asking "why do you like apple jacks? they don't taste like apples!" that, and it's been a hallmark of many a great fake tracklist for eons 'round here.

"moonbeam levels": it just is. (cue kids in background going "yeaaah!" like it's totally profound)

Ok ok, I see. It's just one of those things. I was just afraid there was something I really wasn't getting about it. I was chatting with a friend about it and he was like: "....how can someone not like this? The liking of this is unanimous. wtf." lol

I guess I'm just a square then.

Moonbeam Levels is a song that if released now on a soundtrack or as a single would chart top ten.Classic Prince .
But the song did not fit in 1999 nor Purple Rain so what album sans Graffiti Bridge would it been approprate for ?

Great answer.

And I'd like to add it's not comepletly over blown and corny like "All My Dreams".

The lyrics alone make it great. The music is subversive, Prince doing a great rock tune. Historionic and powerful. Especially the chorus.

I'd put it among Prince's top 10 songs. The arrangement is such a mix of warm/cold and the lyrics and vocals are quite heartfelt, especially for that point in his career. In the end, it's just my opinion, but that song is otherwordly great.
