I heard of Prince through BET Awards this year with his smash hit 3121. That song alone got him into his groove.
Personal, I would say C. Girl from Musicology album or Million Days

News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I wanna be your lover put him on the radar. And was a #1 on r&b stations and did not do too bad on pop. ALso , he performed it on Bandstand.
I think more people noticed him after that song, or started taking notice. Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

Actually, IMO, I think WDC was the first to buck the system due to it's lack of a bassline. It was expected that a song must have a bassline in it. P believed in this song so much that, as it was allowed onto the album, it also went through the roof. I am MrVictor....

I think Purple rain. He'll be remebered forever for that song.

WDC. But not because it didn't have a bassline. That is an impressive little factoid for orgers, but it's not like the masses gave a damn that the song didn't have a bass.
After 1999, Prince was an artist who'd had a couple of hit songs. But so were alot of other people. WDC took Prince from just being one of many artists who'd had a few hits to a genuine superstar. That song, along with the whole PR experience, really nailed it down that his talent was something special. "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

"The Most Beautiful Girl in The World"
i hate that song, never liked it but no one can deny the impact it had on his mindset and further career. on a personal level, no other single has had such an wide efect on him. the succes of this 'experiment' made him turn his whole recordinglife upside down. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I would agree with Isten -- TMBGITW laid the groundwork for everything Prince has done over the past 12 years.
Additionally, I would give honorable mention to "Kiss." He was already beyond superstardom at that time, and don't get me wrong...I love Parade...but without that massively radio-friendly single UTCM would have been an even bigger bomb, and the album would have faired much worse as well. Lots of casual radio listeners bought Parade because of "Kiss," expecting to hear more of the same. That single, paired with a great video, saved 1986 for Prince, especially in the minds of people who thought ATWIAD was the beginning of the end. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

That depends on whether you're talking about then or now. As huge as When Doves Cry was, I don't think it's had the same lasting appeal as:
Purple Rain--Ultimate Prince song 1999--2nd ultimate Prince song but for universal lasting appeal I'd go with Kiss--Pop staple Little Red Corvette--pop/rock staple or even: I Wanna Be Your Lover--R&B staple My Legacy

wanna know why i believe that it's singlehandedly the most important single in ol' boy's entire oeuvre? if it hadn't become a hit, chances are that prince's career woulda become somewhat dead in the water. you gotta remember, the 2nd album was done in order for the brotha to recoup the losses he made when he did for you. IIRC, not only did the for you LP not sell too well, but he used up the budget he was given for, what, 3 albums just on that one. i bet the folks at warners was heated. so, thank yall's lucky stars that "iwbyl" helped totally get prince's foot in the door and stay there so he could continue on with pooting out stuff like "lrc" and such.

I agree. IWBYL was the first Prince song that got regular radio-play in the Netherlands (Ferry Maat's Soul Show). And it hooked me up as Prince fan Another important single is '1999' - it was the first video of Prince played on Dutch TV. These two songs prepared the international breakthrough with Purple Rain... imho [Edited 9/27/06 4:22am]
