Prince and Herbie Hancock (aka Herbie and the Love Bug)

I've just been listening to Herbie Hancock's cover of Thieves in The Temple. Nice laid back track. It got me thinking does anyone know if Prince and Herbie have ever jammed together? Any interviews in which either one has discussed the other? They certainly know each other and admire each other's work ( herbie was at the 3121 party at prince's house in LA, so I hear ). A collaboration between the two would be something else. Come on Prince, you've done the tedious commercial drivel with 3121 and Musicology - got it out of your system - give Herbie a call!.....Don't make me come over there!

I've heard conflicting things. Supposedly at some points Herbie has said he's not keen on prince and couldn't understand Miles Davis' fascination with him, on the other hand supposedly he's played Theives in the Temple and said to the crowd 'so you dig Prince too?' so I'm not sure really!

Herbie likes Prince. I've seen a a snippet of an interview where he says something like "it's the groove that drives me to Prince...the sound...". I also vaguely remember reading somewhere that they jammed together at one of the 3121 parties in 2005 (though my mind may be playing tricks on me).

This is an interesting subject, as Prince's jazz-funk stuff, like N.E.W.S. etc, has a Herbie like feel 2 it.

I work with Herbie directly, and with Prince indirectly in a particular area of digital recording, and I've never inquired.

I'm sure that Herbie's Headhunters stuff was being listened 2 by a very young Prince.

Oh yeah...

I forgot 2 say that I don't think a collaboration needs 2 happen.

I was just pointing out the musical connection.

Thanks, Sexxydancer... DANCE!

Catching up with pianist Herbie Hancock and his all-star band
Seattle Times, by Paul de Barros
February 4, 2005

"My wife called three times," a somewhat groggy Herbie Hancock said on the phone from his office in Los Angeles a few Sunday afternoons ago.

The charismatic pianist had been up all night.

At Joni Mitchell's.

After driving her home from a party at Prince's.

Plenty glam.

Don't call the scandal rags yet. The two stars are just friends. (Collaborators, too. Mitchell sang on Hancock's "Gershwin's World" and he reciprocated on her "Both Sides Now.")

"The idea was to stay [at the party] 10 or 20 minutes, just to talk to Prince about some things," said the former Miles Davis sideman. "Then when I dropped Joni off, we continued to talk. She was playing ball outside in her yard with her dog."
Hancock — sans Mitchell — appears with trumpeter Roy Hargrove and saxophonist Michael Brecker in the all-star band Directions in Music at 8 tonight at the Paramount Theatre
