prince vs. eric clapton

prince in my opinion is better guitar player.
eric clapton stopped envolving as a guitar player after cream and derec and the dominos.
jeff beck wasnt much better then clapton in the 1960s.but jeff beck improved to as a player very much, while clapton never ever experimented on guitar after cream and derek and the dominos.
i mean listen to derek and the dominos live from filmore, eric played much better when he was 25 then now days

Every now and then throughout his carrear Clapton pulls out some really great solos but if I had to choose I would say Prince as a whole is probably a better guitarist than Clapton. One guitarist I think is just as talented a player as P but in a totally different style and who is sadly often never mentioned and forgotten about is former Stones and Bluesbreaker Mick Taylor.

Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen...are all better guitarists. Did nothing but compose and play guitar. No protogees, no choreography, no movies....it's unreasonable to compare different music genres, anyway. forgot Pete Townsend,

Prince is a great player, but I love to hear Slowhand tear into a solo. He's more of a straight blues player than Prince, 'tis true. But, Clapton has a way with nuance, tone and dexterity that cannot be overrated.

Prince during "Small Club" era would've eaten Clapton for breakfast. Today? I'm not nearly as sure.

Prince, 'cause though there are few things prettier than a "Slowhand" solo, Clapton has no funk at all. That's why I dug Stevie Ray Vaughan more. Clapton is a very "stately" player - you get no sense of "dirtiness/funk in his playing. But then again, you have other facets of playing, such as slide playing, which we've never heard P do. Clapton definitely can play some slide.

Still, I favor Prince, simply because he's a MUCH better/funkier rhythm player than Clapton and takes more chances in his solos. Clapton can still "bring it" when he wants to, though.

I just had a talk about Mick Taylor with a friend of mine today. He said he saw him live in the early 80s and was really impressed by his playing. Might have to check him out a little more closely.

I think Clapton has funk. lol It's just that Prince has SO MUCH FUNK, that Eric's pales in comparison. And, you're right: SRV was super-funky, too. eek

Have you heard EC's album with BB King? "Riding with the King." Some amazing playing from EC and some stellar singing from BB.

ya know that phrase "better than" is all in the mind and ears of the listener. meanwhile both of them cats have changed the face of guitar as we know it, and are in a select fraternity of musicians that can make the hairs on the back of your neck shoot up in less than three notes...

Eric Clapton hands down, Prince don't even know who BB King is.
Jeff Beck hands down. Prince is a multi guy, Clapton has written tons of classics on guitar, Prince only has like Purple Rain and Let's Go Crazy.

I kind of agree with your vote, but "Five Women" and Prince's other blues tunes suggest he knows a thing or two about BB King.

I would love to see Prince and Rufin go at it on the stage, that could cause an explosion in the building. Ruffin geats real rough and grimy with it!

I've only sen one person play 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' as good as Eric Clapton, and that is Prince. Prince is much more diverse, whereas Clapton is a bit more predictable. They are both awesome, but in different ways.

I generally don't like this type of thread, I think they are both great players and am not trying to choose one.

HOWEVER, someone earlier hit on something that spoke to me. I think the reason I choose Prince is that he is so nasty. Clapton feels like the professor and Prince feels like the girl in class who will blow you. It is interesting to hear the professor speak, but you'd rather be getting blown.

If you're speaking of "while my guitar gently weeps" I believe that was the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

You can be very biased in your assesments. I am a Prince head also, but Eric is a guitar god, Prince is not. Prince is not a blues rock player. I have yet to hear Prince play blues, or even rock if we really want to get down to the bare bones. Prince has gotten better technically since the 80's, but he still tends to hide behind too many effects and loops. It seems as he got better technically he added more effects.

What does Eric need to challenege his playing for? He is already a Guitar God.

Prince needs to stop treating the guitar like a toy, and just play guitar. Speaking of challenge, Prince has been doing the same runs for over a decade, now he just uses the whammy more.

Prince is a much better player now by far. He would have never been able to pull of Question Of You and Joy solos like that back then.

you are righ about prince hiding behind effects, but that was in the rave 2000 dvd period of time.since then the only effects he uses are a bit of distortion and wah wah/.
prince's guitar style is blues rock.its lifted direct from hendrix legacy.
clapton is guitar god,but so is prince.
prince's playing on while my guitar... is much better and more advanturous then claptons original

Hmm, do you know the solos he did on the ONA tour during "The Other Side of the Pillow" and "Strollin'"?
