I have yet to hear Prince play blues, or even rock if we really want to get down to the bare bones.

Then what is it that he plays?

Eric Clapton once stated he cannot read Music also that when he was a Kid he wanted a drum kit, but his Parents (or I think it was Grand Parents as he lived with those?) Bought a Guitar as it was quiter !!

Prince is great on Guitar, but Clapton, evolving from his Era of lesser technology etc Musicwise is in my opinion, fairly level with Prince.

biggrin

Eric has a guitar legacy, Prince does not.

Prince plays more jazz glam porno effect driven guitar then Blues/Rock.

Prince is not a Blues/Rock player, that's like saying Prince is a rapper.

Blues, lol, Prince just started playing Gospel Blues on the last two albums, lol @ Prince acting like it's a new style.

Prince will never step on the same stage as BB King or any other Blues legends, he sure as hell won't step on the stage with Eric or Jeff Beck, but he will step on the stage any day with Lenny Kravitz. HAHAHHAHAHAHHA

You really need to stop, because you really don't know what you are talking about.

I will repeat that again, and if you can't read.

I've only sen one person play 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' as good as Eric Clapton, and that is Prince. Prince is much more diverse, whereas Clapton is a bit more predictable. They are both awesome, but in different ways.

You oughta check out Jeff Healey then !!! wink

Neither are virtuosos. Both are great players. I'd put Jeff Beck in the virtuoso category.

I never really rated Jeff Beck !! Always thought SRV and Buddy Guy much better.

Others to go up there would be, Rory Gallagher, Albert Collins and Ry Cooder.

Obviously my own personal tastes wink

I like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. I'm listening to some neo-classical stuff now like Yngwie Malmsteen and Tony Macalpine.

Well you would certainly enjoy my Collection then !! If you like Malmsteem you will love Vinnie Moore - I have the Complete Vai and Satriani collection as well as Vinnie Moore and about half of Malmsteem plus other Guitarists (Gary Moore through to Al Di Meola!!)

highfive Yeah, I'd definitely enjoy that collection! Yeah, I've definitely got to listen to some Vinnie Moore. All the Shrapnel stuff really...

I'd love to see Prince do an instrumental guitar album. But I don't think he'd go for that type of thing.

Not to get off the subject here too much, but since were dealing with the issue of guitar playing here, I was just listening to the Journey song Who's Crying Now today and I really LOVE that guitar solo the closes out the song played by former Santana member Neal Schon. I would love to hear Prince cover the song and hear how well he could take on that gorgeous solo with his guitar.

Do you think he could create an even more beautiful sounding solo than Neal? Or how about if Clapton took on the song? I think Prince would do better than Clapton with the guitar solo on that song especially given the whole Santana connection with Journey.

prince is technically more proficient and more versatile.

clapton is just better at blues.

prince whips clapton's ass at jazz, rock, soul and funk though. easily.

i like them both, but prince is more interesting.

- The only part I really agree with you is the ´legacy´ thing. Indeed, Prince wasnt half influential as Jeff Beck and Clapton. But ironically, he received props from both. I saw Jeff Beck despising Jonny Lang and praising Prince, And Clapton said that Purple Rain solo is his all time favorite solo, and really admires Prince. On his autobiography, Miles Davis said that Prince is a kick ass guitar player, and he has played with several legends too.

Prince IS very good. Not a guitar innovator like Hendrix or a virtuoso like Al Di Meola, but he has an unique voice on the instrument and is very versatile. Honestly, I dont think it´s big deal if Prince is considered a blues player or not: he is a player, period.

Ah, BanishedOne, please stop these threads about ´who is better´....music is not competition

yeah, it's not sport. leave that crap to the 50cents of the world.

and by the way, banishedone, you've argued this point about clapton before. i'm sure you actually started an identical thread way back. it's just a LITTLE boring and only brings the armchair critics out of the woodwork to rant and rave.

jeff beck wasnt much better then clapton in the 1960s.but jeff beck improved to as a player very much, while clapton never ever experimented on guitar after cream and derek and the dominos.

Beck was WAY better than Clapton in the sixties. Check out his Filmore Live Shows when Rod Stewart was singing with him.

Jeff wipes the floor up with Eric in this clip from 81.

Eric Clapton looks so young in that clip. That was 25 years ago. He pretty much looks his age now, unlike P. Must've been all the drugs in the 70-80's.
