ohio players influence on Prince

I was just listening to the Ohio Players greatest hits cd, and their sound compared to Prince made me feel that they had alot of influence on his music. There is a guitar break in one of their songs, which sounds like the guitar break in Darling Nikki. In their song o-h-i-o, there is a weird sound which is the same weird sound that opens Head....anyone else hear the same similarities?

the weird sound in "O-H-I-O" ain't quite the same as the one in "head". one's a electronically-manipulated voice, the other's a weird synth effect.

Yes, I have a version of "Skin Tight" that Prince covered and it's one of my favorite bootlegs!

BTW, "Sweet Sticky Thang" = Ohio Players! Not just a description of Cat!

I've mentioned several times on this site about this. Even wrote a thread about it. The biggest, most obvious "influence" is P's song "Computer Blue", which is a direct bite from the Ohio Players "What The Hell" from their album "Fire". The riff is damn near plagerism! Also, check out "It's Your Night (Words of Love) from their "Skin Tight" album and then listen to P's "Condition Of The Heart".

This might be absolutely ridiculous, but I kind of remember when Carmen first came on the scene some magazine saying that her father was in the Ohio players.. anyone else see that? ...Anyone?

Mrcoolidge

Junie Morrison was a heavy influence on Prince. Junie was the leader of the Ohio Players in the early 70's before he left for a solo career, and later joined the P-funk army....

Junie was a "One Man Show" before Prince and as far as a multi-instrumentalist goes, he was one of the blueprint writers for that type of music to became the standard in Black music...

any Prince fans...I advice you to check out the Junie Morrison solo albums on Westbound records, and also the Early Ohio Players, the westbound years..

Junie was an amazing cat, and really opened a door that Prince would later go through...

I'm listening 2 these tracks right now. I can hear what u speak of in Romantic Warrior and Words of love.

I don't hear what u speak of in "what the hell". I don't hear that at all sounding like Computer Blue.
