Riverpoet,

Prince has been "musically" kicking ass and taking names for more than 25 years. Even with all his antics, the one thing that has always remained undeniable is that he is a serious musician! So I think this topic has more to do with your issues with liking Prince than it does with Prince, himself.

Besides, if the man could make name for himself wearing a trenchcoat, thigh high boots, and a pair of briefs, those campy suits as you call them are simply a vast improvement in style and don't hurt one bit.

um no its about whether or not him dressing that way and wearing make-up hinders his chances of being taken seriously by a general public - some of whom are only just now becoming aquainted with him

younger audiences these days are quick to smell a screw-up and will judge accordingly - thus not even bothering with the music past that point

I"m afraid that the latext and MAC makeup may actually be pulling his skin together.

If we let him just go natural he might end up looking like Bill Cosby with a bad perm or some shit like that. neutral

Some of those guys wear make-up and they are not the most manly men walking the face of the earth. I have said it once and I will say it again. Everybody in Hollywood wears make-up and P's suits are a 100 times better than what he use to wear on stage. Nobody wants to see his 48 year old ass cheeks.

RiverPoet Prince has won every kind award out there. Grammy's, AMA's MTV, Brits. All of them. Just a few years ago he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Based on that, How can you say that he's not taken serious as a musician? Some of his peers even went as far as to call him the greatest ever. Even though he has a style of dressing that's different from anyone else, He is very well respected in the industry.

Of course he is repected in the industry and he has a lot of fans. Everytime P hits a bad patch in his carreer we get naysayers like Riverpoet. Nobody stays at the top foever but, we all know P is a legend and has soon as concert tickets go on sale we will all be in line to get them.

The original point of this thread does have its merit I think.

I also believe Prince is indeed shackled by his own self image.
That being of a sexy, dancing, funk/rock/pop superstar.

Which is cool and great!
But I believe Prince has so much unlimited potential that goes FAR beyond that.
You see,..its not merely a question of him acting his age,...but that musically and visually for the past 12 years or so....he has become extremely one dimensional,...as far as the creative scope of his music and look.

A true prisoner to his own image ...not only as he sees himself...but aslo as he seen by everyone else.

He could be pioneering different kinds of rythms and beats, he could explore other kinds of music around the world, different instruments, ...but instead he treads the same road over and over and over again.
With variations on the same R&B/Rock formulas that he mastered and surpassed over 20 years ago.

He is capable of ssooooo much more,...but he doesnt do it.
Just same old stuff.
For any other artist ,...that would be fine....but not for Prince.
He has too much talent.
Getting older doesnt mean you have to become less imaginative or less provoking.
But thats exactly how hes become.

And its a shame.

At his age,
I still get a bit frustrated that he still doesn't get the proper props that he deserves.

Hell, when the list for the top most influential purple dinosaurs came out,
he still came in third after Barney & Dino.

As a musiclover, i love Prince in the first place for his mastery of different musical styles, his original, often brilliant ideas, the fact that he can create experimental music that is still catchy.

One thing i care less for is 'the' Prince who is seen as someone eccentrily dressed singer, the 'queer' artist, the half man / half woman kind of person.

As much as i appreciate him as a musician, i think the way he is presenting himselve is not only overshadowing the things he achieved as a songwriter, singer, musician and producer, but it also leads to people not taking him serious as a musician IMO.

When i saw his performance of 'lolita' on American Idol, i felt quite irritated to be honest, i mean: there is a great musician, a genious, which has created one the best records of all time (Sign of the Times) wearing thick make up and performing a 'childrens' song with two superficial bombshells.
To be honest, thats NOT what i am looking for in a musician formely known as a genious. And i have the idea many people feel the same, as the poor sales numbers of 3121 show.

Whats wrong ultimately, is that i really think Prince is affraid of showing his age, his maturity trough his music and his performances. He is running away from the person he is or should be at this moment, by wearing thick make up and still caring for chart succes with 'the youngsters'. By that he is not only fooling his public, but most of all, himselve.
This musician once labelled as a genious is seemingly affraid to act his own age, is affraid of letting all the superficiality (thick make up, campy suits, halvenaked 'twins') go, is affraid of letting his music speak for himselve.

Thats a harsh thing to see, and i hope that he sees in that contuining this way will lead up to people perceiving him as another 'has been': a James Brown or Tom Jones, repeating tricks in search for the money,

I don't think I would worry about minor things like his makeup. Mosts artists/performers wear makeup when they are stage. He definitely is not a "has been" especially when you can sell out large arenas in less than 15 minutes, and still have fans wanting more of you, even after you performed over 96 shows. and websites being created just to talk about him, whether good or bad. Fans apparently still have an interest in his music. Can't say that for other musicians who have been around since the late 1970s. I am glad he is still around. Besides, we all act differently when we are younger, he has grown with his music, and I appreciate that he is still willing to share it with us, as he could just decide one day that "this is it".

I think performing with the Twins, and new protege, changing band members just show that everything must change, and I love the risks that he takes with his music. Some artists just want to stay in one category and he doesn't. I love the fact that he could take the criticism and keeps going no matter what. Cheers to you Prince for keeping it going, "no matter what!".

That's the most beautiful thing I've read all day, lol. Cracked me up. But seriously, in one sense, I wish he'd take the make-up factor down a notch, but only because as MY favorite artist, I want others to get into him too. I can't help that fact, I want to share. And many people do judge on image first--doesn't mean they're 'ignorant', it means they live in our society, lol. I like the suits, I think they straddle the line of "Princely weird" and "boring" very well. But a part of me agrees with NouveauDance, it would be nice to see him become a total caricature, just blouses and lace and blush. And jeri curls.

I have no doubt about it. I even asked Alan Leeds on that P.org interview...
Those suits and make up were his trademark and made him an icon, but he would have been a lot more respected if he dressed less flamboyant. Ok, Hendrix was flamboyant, but androgyny is something that is really a turn off for most people...(at least here in Brasil)

Ops...now that I read the first post...I have to disagree. Lately, his image is a lot more ´clean´ (specially Musicology days). I think he is finally seen as a ´mature´ artist by lots of people, specially after those performances like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I thought you were referring to the thick make up of ´The Most beautiful girl´ video...

Big deal, look at little Richard, hes 75 and still putting all that foundation, eyeliner and Jheri curl wigs on. I think Prince has always been and always will be a peacock, he loves to stand out.
Besides his short cut fawn and salmon jackets are hardly the purple frilled regalia of the past.
