What songs do you think would have been a better choice of a lead single?

That is, unless you agree with the choices Prince has made over the years?

If you mean to improve the chances of commercial success then IMHO...

7 or Blue Light should have been the lead off the Symbol Album. Sexy MF was too 'Princey' (i.e. the casual listener just wouldn't get it). Granted, they are both mid-tempo, but they are more radio friendly.

P Control from The Gold Experience...This song was HUGE in the clubs long after its release. Imagine if it had been the lead horse (or a horse at all) from this album.

Emancipation...there are a couple from which to choose. Get Yo Groove On or Sleep Around would have been a good intro to this triple punch.

Strange But True or Baby Knows from Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic.

Musicology might have been better served with Dear Mr Man as the lead single. I think it would have made Prince seem more in touch with the times. The blood-sucking media might have picked up on a 'controversy' a la American Life by Madonna thus adding interest to the album that wasn't there otherwise. Any press is good press as they say

3121...no question. Love as the first single would have been more friendly to a broader range of radio formats. I'm not a big fan of a lead single being a ballad.

All the other choices over the years seem spot on. When Doves Cry...I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time hearing this. Never heard anything like it before. Raspberry Beret...spot on! Take'em in a whole new direction when they expect more of the same AND at the hight of popularity. Kiss...I remember when I first heard this one also...another 'never heard a song like this' moment.

Prince does some excellent covers. Bonnie Rait's "I Can't Make You Love Me" sent chills up my spine, from the Emancipation CD.

Congratulations, you're a tool! Yay, GO PRINCE!

Face Down instead of Betcha By Golly, Wow!

7 instead of My Name Is Prince.

Endorphinmachine instead of I Hate U.

So Far, So Pleased instead of The Greatest Romance (though this one seemed to not happen because of record company politics, in which case I would've gone with Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do).

A Million Days instead of Musicology.

Love instead of Te Amo Corazon (I still can't believe it was a single at all).

The choices for 'lead single' were usually very good in the WB years. But
since he released 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' and had a hit with
it, he seemed obsessed with releasing ballads (which hasn't really worked since).

Well, I know it didn't do so well in the USA, but in the UK Sexy MF did pretty well - I want to say it went Top 5, but my memory is a little fuzzy.

FIRST SINGLE FROM 3121 SHOULD HAVE BEEN 'PARTYUP'!!!!! remixed/remastered/whatever YES!!!! either that or '7' instead of ' My Name is Prince' in 1992. More of the melodic spiritual instead of the re-asserting your presence as a pop icon. Or a re-release of 'Sister'.
