Does anyone actually think 'RAVE' is a good cd?

I've just been listening to it and thought it was pretty decent. My version doesn't have prettyman though for what ever reason?

how about y'll?

p.s is the npgmc version any better?

Well...

What must I say? It was Prince trying to be hip by trying to be contemporary. Didn't age really well, I must say.

Prettyman to me is easily the best track on there, too bad it isn't on your copy.

I'd say so. But between the 2, you can compile a pretty decent album. It's not as bad as everyone say it is.

Yes it is. It is absolute whack.

Totally forgettable songwriting throughout. Even my instant fave Baby Knows hardly gets any spins here.

By Prince's standards yeah, it's one of his weaker efforts.

But I still don't think it's that bad of an album.

Of course I rarely dig it out, but I can find some version of most of the songs that I like.

I think it's okay.

Not great, but like Gangsta said, really not as bad some people make it out to be, either.

My wife today expressed total astonishment when I told her Prince community views Rave with disdain. She loves the CD.

I like it,
I dont like Larry Grahams contributions esp during "Winding road"
Man O War is fantastic.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

There are some really strong songs spread out over the disc, but it's an incredibly bad album. It's a transparent desperate effort to make a commercial comeback, and there's zero flow to the album.

Certainly not Prince's best album by a long way, but it has it's fair share of decent tracks, of course each has their own likes and dislikes.

You do realise Prettyman is a hidden track at the end, right? I've never heard of a version without it, unless it is some boot of the original...

Most people say the 'In2' remix version is better, it isn't that different really, most just slight extensions at the end of songs, Beautiful Strange is a must have though.

i'd say pretty decent. the thing with me is i always have to stop for a couple of year and then go back to listening to albums like this. i just started listening to this one recently and it's decent. i MUST skip a couple of tracks but its still ok. I've even started listening to New Power Soul again. ok now i'm reaching. wink

Rave is a good album, especially the NPGMC version. I wrote before that I bought it for Beautiful Strange only and was shocked at how much I liked the other songs.

I like 'Eye Love U, But Eye Can't Trust U Anymore'.

'Prettyman' is good too. 'Baby Knows' is okay. I quite like 'Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do' too.

The rest is pish though.

I've never heard the Rave In2 version.

It's not too bad an album really, I prefer the 'In2' version better than the 'Un2' original.
(Not that it's that much different really, just tweaked a bit here and there)

I think this album gets bad talk from the fans. Mostly because he sets up the album to be a "return" or "Look who produced the album" or that the title harkened on something from the past (like crystal ball) yet doesn't live up to the hype of the title. Also you'd think with the talent he brought in for it, the songs would be...er better.

THAT SAID...I think it's way under rated..I am talking about the "remixed" version that should have been the official. Songs like Beautiful Strange, Pretty Man, Greatest Romance, Sun Moon Stars, and Man O War are some really good tracks! The remixes of Hot wit you and Undisputed aren't remixed too much but for some reason they sound a lot better.

It has a lot of really good songs, but the awful songs on it like Silly Game, Wherver U Go, Hot Wit U, Everyday is a Winding Road, are so bad that they negate the great songs on it, Baby Knows, Prettyman, Man O War, So Far So Pleased, and make the album as a whole pretty unlistenable.

Possibly my biggest complaint with the album is that I wish the title track had been included with the Crystal Ball album instead and the remix used for the '99 release. It just bugs me having that old gem rubbing up against the new stuff.

I'm no 3121 cheerleader, but I definitely rank it a solid step above Rave, if only for 3121, Black Sweat and Fury. Like everyone's saying, Rave's one of his worst, but even his worst are better than most of the crap out there, and will probably end up being guilty pleasures years later (which is what happened to Chaos and Disorder for me)

I dig the Rave album. It's not in my top 10 but it's a pretty good album

Favs:

Tangerine
The Sun, The Moon And Stars
ManOwar
Silly Game
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic
So Far, So Pleased
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

The only song I still don't like off either version is Baby Knows (I'm sure it'll rub off on me eventually, though). I remember being a little disappointed because it wasn't as funky as some of his other 90s albums. It sounded like disc 4 of Emancipation to me. NPS had just rubbed off on me and I was hoping for even more of a funk fest with Rave. Once I accepted that it was more pop-oriented and less funk-oriented, I began a proper appreciation for it, as I also eventually did with Emancipation, The Vault, Chaos, etc.
