The DJ played 1999...

Okay so normally I try not to harass DJs to play P...especially when lounges already have a cool vibe going on. (Contrast to if they are playing a lot of shit, Prince can only improve the vibe... smile ) So last night I was at a bar/lounge/club in the East Village and the DJ was spinning old MJ, Kurtis Blow, De La Soul, Tribe, etc. Then I saw several people go request songs and he didn't seem too annoyed by it...so my friends went and asked him if he had any Prince. They asked me what Prince song I wanted and while I thought something like Sexy Dancer, Let's Work, A Love Bizarre would have been good choices--or maybe even 3121 or Black Sweat, I said, Any Prince song would be better than nothing. (I didn't want to be too demanding b/c I know DJs have their own flow.) Bad bad bad. Do you know what Prince song he played? 1999! disbelief WTF? I was very disappointed--and the dance floor ground to a halt. neutral Now don't get me wrong--1999 is a good song, but he didn't play the whole song, and 1999 was 7 years ago. It's sort of weird to play, right? I mean if he had the 1999 album, why not play DMSR, LRC, or even All the Critics Love You in New York... Or if it was from the Hits--why not pick some other song...but 1999 just seemed so....dated. sad

There's not really a point to this post, just looking for other P fans to comiserate with that 1999 was a bad choice for the DJ to play.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

This reminds me of when I went to my Marine Corps Ball in 2001. I asked the DJ to play a Prince song. I was kinda scared to do that but I thought I had to listen to all the other shit so they could listen to mine for a few minutes. He put on Erotic City and the dance floor started to clear eek eek . Motherfuckin Erotic City!!! There were some people left but not as much as before but I had a blast and I even went to the dancefloor and dropped it like it was hot for a minute! When it comes to the general public, there's no accounting for good taste but I got what I wanted that night! cool

I know it's not that serious--it just seemed that out of ALL the Prince songs available 1999 was an odd choice and didn't fit in very well. Plus, I'm a self admitted bar & music snob, so I was hoping for something not quite so main stream.

Later he played My Humps followed by Dontcha (or whatever the name of that song is by the Pussycat Dolls) so any respect he had gained from me by playing Tribe, Kurtis Blow, De La Soul, etc. plummeted like a lead balloon. shrug

Right, but if he had 1999, wouldn't he have had the entire album with lotsa other choices?
