When I heard him close with the "system of things" quote, I thought it was an undertone critique on the show or somethin. Was it me or was the audience' applause after the closer kinda low?

no, they loved it. At least in the shots i remember

OK peeps -

I dont know what performance you were watching but both were GREAT!

C'mon I've been watching this guy forever 4 moments just like this. And trust me I aint no npgmc scribe

With Chaka he made it all that much better. I mean Stevie was bad ass on the Motif (same one I have) and the classic Stevie harmonica was smokin'

Guest vox were excellent and Chaka, though in need of Jenny Craig, was in fact...well...Chaka. The booming voice (yes the early screams were a bit much) and the wonderful smile that all people cant resist (well, except for PFluffy or whatever he goes by now - his son...funny! Conan Obrien will be pulling that one out when this kid is famous)

And then there was P.

Guitar volume problems aside it kicked in and he was off to the races...this guy wasnt playing no rhythm guitar! He was leading and simply brilliant! His few dance moves got a few jeers but I love that shit with this guy - cause when he responds to a beat he is deeeeepppp into it!

3121

WOW! Made me really love this song. Here he is..he's played a different song on all these shows (first time ever!) and he's just killin' it. great set (very professional looking) great costumes, awesome mini-solo and BEP vox at the end it must be his next release. 3121 - The Remix >>>Nice pre-plug Prince!

Bottom line: He must tour...

NOW
peace

And who is this Jehovah God?

It was punctuated with a slight pause, so he rather meant "Jehovah, God" or "Jehovah / God". It's a quite clear indication to me at least that he is again fusing beliefs from the various sources he has dabbled with in his previous life and coming up with something that fits him better. That's nothing new to Prince, as he seems to be totally incapable of accepting an outside doctrine on any matters concerning his life.

Ummm... did you see his interview on the Today Show in 1998? It was JW fundy Christian jargon just spilling out of his mouth. While I would have agreed with you before the JW conversion, he has fallen into the Christian bubble speak I am all too familiar with.

It seems, though, that since Musicology 2003-04 someone on his PR team told him to drop it b/c it had been estranging all but his diehard fans, which makes for Bad Sales professionally and Bad Points in the JW world (you know, recruit at all costs - don't turn them away). Hopefully, he will indeed slacken the cookie-cutter jargon and find his own path again, or at least begin to show the unique path that he is on.

I've been quite sad lately in thinking that his raw genius and open soul search over the years has culminated into the kind of factory-produced fundamentalist which seems to be before us; generally, I think this is also endemic in our present American culture.

3121 was the greatest, he closed it with a baddass STRONG epic original vibe. One of his best choices on a tv show ever.

Right. That wasn't your usual, nice, modern R&B/HipHop thing they all wanted to hear. That was something different, right in their faces.

Everytime Prince takes the stage now, I just think the guy IS a legend. Prince is right-up there with the BEST. Regardless of someone like Busta's reaction(Busta isn't even in the same league), I think that Prince has eclipsed Michael Jackson as far as respect by his peers--as an artist. I'm not talking about sales. Sometimes respect isn't about sales. Right now, I look at Prince as someone like Eric Clapton, Sting, as I previously mentioned, and Stevie Wonder. It doesn't really matter how much or little Prince sells at this point: he is respected. People look forward to seeing him perform. In fact, I don't even think he comes across as eccentric as he used to be. From what I've been reading here, Prince seems to really enjoy his fans. I think that is the reason he might enjoy playing in smaller venues.

I'm really so proud to have been a Prince fan for now 20 years. It's great to have seen him evolve. In a way, Prince reminds me of the actor Johnny Depp. People sort of took them both for granted for a while even though the public knew that they were talented. But now both of them are hugely respected for their crafts. It's great to see. Plus both Prince and Johnny just seem to be be comfortable in their own skins. They seem to be comfortable with their fans, status, and hopefully happy in their lives.

Goodness he remindes me so much of Fred Armisen from SNL here. Throughout the whole 3121 preformance I just couldn't stop thinking about Fred! LOL..even the mannerisims matched. Not a comforting thought! I don't want to see Prince as a character. This stuff usually doesn't happen...I don't think of impesonators usually when I see him preform but some of those faces he was making made me think of the Prince show. But also when I see old early eighties preformances of "Do me baby" and "International Lover" I start giggling because it is so classic, campy Prince...he just looks like an impersonator of himself.

I was pretty pleased to see him do 3121 live. It is one of my favorites on the album and I just loved the look on Harry Belafonte's face during the preformance of "I feel for you". I just love to see how music can move other people..bring so much joy to them...cause that is how listening to music affects me.

How do you know throwing the mic was not planned? Did Will I Am actually state categorically that it was unplanned? Or are you just interpreting it that way?

Because WIll said so in the aftershow. He said when asked his favorite part of the show that he had to be biased and that Prince eyed him and tossed him the mic and he went for it.

I thought Will was cool and was more than appropriate tha P would have him rap. One thought P looked like he wanted to play some more...the way the first set ended prior to Damon (whack drunk ass Wayans) came out and said good night...P cut his ass off with the guitar and they started playing again.

Also peeped Kanye and Busta waving their hands and bouncing

That being said we have all seen P perform better than that and something was wrong with the sound and it wasn't just when P was on. The performance just didn't seem complete or finished

I'm sure at the very least it was totally planned that Prince would continue after Wayans signalled the end of the show. For a start, you can see Prince and the Twinz standing there with the obvious intention of continuing. Normally after a performance, as we all know, after he's milked the applause he quickly runs off. For seconds, the titles ran over the end performance, if that wasn't planned the titles would have run over an empty stage and no music!

Well, if Will really did a spontaneous rap, he did pretty well.

I think Prince thought #!@! is his "blackest" song cause it's a lot of Pfunk, but the crowd would have loved "the Word" or "black Sweat" I wonder why he didnt do a better song.

Oh yeah...I liked the performance! Sing, Yolanda!! That live version of 3121 was great, I'd love to hear the whole thing though I could live without the rapping! razz It's a good sign he did that song, plus Black Sweat at the aftershow, hopefully I'll get to hear it live, soon... nod

Television broadcast are very CONTROLLED environments. No way that was NOT planned. I don't give a damn what Will I am said on the aftershow. I KNOW better.

Yeah, 3121 is probably the blackest song on the album & probably the most appropriate song for the hip hop/gangsta reputation of the BET awards. I teach a lot of gang bangers in Watts, CA and all they listen to is T.I., 50, and all the gangsta rap that rips today's hip hop stations. So naturally, most of them aren't hip to Prince. They couldn't even relate to the album, 3121 when I played it for them during a class party. HOWEVER, after skipping around and getting their listless reactions to the cuts, I played the song 3121 and they ALL thought it was tight. They was like: "Oh that's tight, G. On EVERYTHING, that's tight."

To me, 3121 is the closest funk to what they're into. Only difference is, 3121 AIN'T NO SORRY ASS SAMPLE! Good closer, Prince!
