I saw that and was like HUH!??

Stephen Hill loves to make up funny credits for himself for a lot of the shows on BET - as VP, he's gonna get a credit anyway, so he usually just writes something funny or something about himself, like how much he loves the Redskins. So a credit from him like that isn't unusual ... but this one DOES tell us that he definitely digs him some Prince!

No it was not planned Will I Am said after the show when they interviewd him, that Prince threw him the mike. He said he was honored. He said it was the best performance of the night just being on stage with Prince
[Edited 6/28/06 10:30am]

What ever u say.

It wasn't planned. In rehearsals he was just going to do go out with his guitar and then he saw Will and called him out. I thought it was pretty good.

The tribute performance was alright, but I can tell you, that 3121 performance was THE BOMB!!! Absolutely fucking fantastic! The decision to add Tamar on vocals worked fine imo and helped to make up for the missing vocal distortions from the studio recording. Great performance, and great stage arrangement with the Asian vibe and all that. Anyone who doesn't like it should be punished with repeated listens to the forthcoming Paris Hilton album, lol! biggrin

I think you meant to say that he "bombed". Right? Slowing down the song, changing the key, adding horns and then bringing out Will I Am (you can't tell me that wasn't planned) all just made me cringe. Some songs are better left unchanged and that is one of them. Now, Black Sweat on the other hand is much better live and without that dentist's drill sound.

Preach it!

I didn't get to see it until today on HQ so I had read a lot of less-than-enthusiastic comments, but I thought it was FONKY.

The tribute to Chaka was beautiful. Chaka's my all-time fave female vocalist and Stevie and P, to me, and what they mean to me, are beyond words. To see the 3 of them together on ONE stage....the folks that were present to see that live were truly blessed. I didn't watch the show, but I taped it and watched it later last night. So far, I only watched Chaka's tribute and P's jam on "3121". This is really the only song I dig off of his new album and I'm glad he chose to do this live. It was cool, I dug it. Not on the same level as the tribute of course. I was so happy for P that he got to perform with 2 of his idols. I think that's why he was sooo much more into that than his own jam. It HAD to meant a lot to him.

It was a privilage. She's deserving of that too. I dig India. Very talented woman who truly hasn't gotten her props. It's good to see LEGENDS give it up to her.

Seriously, the Chaka thing was once in a lifetime stuff. Really amazing, funky and loose. It was nice to see Prince so warm and comfortable in the backup mode.
3121 was as good as it could have been, but I think the lyrics are just too cryptic for most people to really get into the song.

Excellent TV performance , probably a classic given the company Prince was
keeping and how unlikely it is we'll see him performing most of those songs
live anywhere else . 3121 sounds really good live too , the album version doesnt connect too well with me but live it had a funky grind that dug its hooks in .Great to see Prince , Chaka AND Stevie performing I feel 4 U together ,brought back memories of the Jam Of The Year 1998 Uk show I saw where Chaka was opening for Prince and he dashed on stage before his set to sing I feel 4 U with her then too biggrin .

P.S. You people stop ratting on the AI performance , Lolita was great live too !

It was interesting that Prince thanked the people that would later join him on stage for the tribute. And who is this Jehovah God? Since when did Jehovah have a last name? And when did God ever become somebody's second name? I'm enjoying the rebroadcast of the show right now. I love the org because you can be both negative and positive. The club seems to reject any negativity and in my opinion, that just isn't reality.

That's just what JW's call God at times...most of the time really...not a first and last name; just one that distinguishes him from his son, Jesus Christ.

Very well stated, and as a fan for more than 20 years, I could not agree more. He is at the point in his career where he can do whatever he wants. HE IS THAT TALENTED. I feel so fortunate to have had him during my life's journey. I've read about so many great musicians of the past and listen to their music, but I have lived the Prince experience and it has been a wonderful trip. It just keeps on getting better. He's such an X factor. You never know what he's going to do, he always keeps it exciting. Sometimes he hits, sometimes he misses, but he never gets complacent. He never lives on his legacy. He keeps growing and evolving and I LOVE HIM for it.

I get sick of people who want to lock him in a time capsule. The man keeps moving forward and it is a joy to see. He's given us so much great music in the past and continues to give us great music. For those people who don't appreciate what he's doing now, wait a few years. History will show you how beautiful this music is that he is creating. Sometimes people get so caught up in the nostalgia related to the older songs that their minds aren't open to receive the new. Once you allow yourself to embrace this music, you will be able to enjoy it. In it you see his personal and musical evolution. It's fantastic.

Your words describe EXACTLY how I feel. It's good to know other fans are on the same wavelength as well.

Inasmuch as I admire the path that Prince took in the late 90s, I now wonder how it woulda been if it had been Prince, Chaka and Stevie - not Larry Graham. Maybe we'd have gotten a more sane response (along the lines of Songs In the Key Of Life). Just wondrin'

How do you know throwing the mic was not planned? Did Will I Am actually state categorically that it was unplanned? Or are you just interpreting it that way?

Because WIll said so in the aftershow. He said when asked his favorite part of the show that he had to be biased and that Prince eyed him and tossed him the mic and he went for it.

I thought Will was cool and was more than appropriate tha P would have him rap. One thought P looked like he wanted to play some more...the way the first set ended prior to Damon (whack drunk ass Wayans) came out and said good night...P cut his ass off with the guitar and they started playing again.

Also peeped Kanye and Busta waving their hands and bouncing

That being said we have all seen P perform better than that and something was wrong with the sound and it wasn't just when P was on. The performance just didn't seem complete or finished

I really enjoyed the live version of 3121. It's funky and it hits hard. I'm looking forward to hearing this on the tour. Easily tied for favorite live Prince performance this year...right there with Fury SNL.

Right. I don't understand why people keep saying he should have sung Black Sweat. 3121 is cool. BS is lame by comparison...it would have been the same ole wack performance.

I'm very critical of PRince but I thought this performance was beyond reproach. I really, really dug it.

Compared to BS, 3121 has more interesting and mysterious lyrics and atmosphere.

I wish he would have switched to BS and funked it up (give a little something of everything)...I always loved the '94 AMA performance with all the people (girls) dancing with him.

I think if the mix was better, and they had time 2 jam on it 4 a while, with Prince taking over the Bass 4 a Bass solo, it would've knocked everyone dead.

OR:

Black Sweat, beginning with an extended jam, with Prince on the synth, and the background vox real low (almost whispered) and funky, like: "workin'...workin' up a Black Sweat..." THAT woulda torn the roof off.

Oh... a wish list... after the fact...

Anyway... I gotta go watch it again, and see how I really feel.

Yea I would have loved that, something different. Put down the guitar for the finale and play keys or dance, do the Prince thing. He already played the guitar with chaka, now show off on drums or just dancing and groovin.

I dunno if it was "epic" but it sure was a hell of a lot better than the super saturated, over produced, showtune style sets he's been playing as of late.

My thoughts:

-Note 2 Beyonce's bass player: Swaying your instrument back and forth without actually touching the strings doesn't fool anybody.

-Note 2 Beyonce: U have a choice young lady, real live vocals or real hair. Xpecting veiwers 2 believe both r authentic was a bit taxing on our end.

-Damon Wayans hasn't been funny in years. Why is any1 surprised by this?

-Y'all need 2 leave Chaka alone. She's earned her right 2 wear suit jackets with a flare that make her butt look like U could project IMAX movies on2 it.

-I thought Prince was adorable during the tribute. Dude was lovin' it and it really came across. Very entertaining.

-"3121" was awesome. I think the vocal was kick a**. Tamar's voice was a nice addition 2 the song. I agree with folks saying it coulda been longer with more jammin' tho.

You are so dead on it. I posted a review where someone said her new female band did not disappoint. I was thinking, THEY ARE NOT PLAYING!!! I wondered if they were models or something when I saw the two keyboardists over there. Beyonce barely sang herself. She pranced around and occaisonally sang a note, but the track was mostly playing and at times she didn't even bother to lip sync to it. Thank goodness for Prince!!

The bio on her web site states she hand picked the musicians for her all girl band- this is damn funny. She has talent, but what in the fuck does she know about musicians?

My personal thoughts on Beyonce/JayZ- She jacked him off on stage. I am happy that she is crazy in love, but I really don't give a damn.....
The road you choose to walk in this life, is a road that leads to the next.....
