Oh, dear. Just saw the performance. I haven't got 3121 so that was my first time hearing those songs and my god, they're shit. Prince, if you don't have a good song then don't go into the studio. Take a walk and look at the clouds instead. You might get inspired. And you guys are actually surprised that the album hasn't soared after THAT? Also, he needs some new moves. After the BRITS performance 4 months ago that was a big letdown

None of which would have mattered of course if Prince had sung some decent songs. All in all the only thing accomplished was to confirm what a lot of people already thought of him. A has been with an attitude problem.

That's what people do. They agree with Simon. And since A.I. is the "all powerful entity" that it is, at this time, it's hard for people to step outside of it and see the whole thing in proper perspective. In time they will.

The performance was fine as it was. Should Prince have let on, in some way, that it's just for show? Probably. Even if he didn't want to talk to anyone, he could have left them purple cookies...or something.

I have to disagree with you. Things are not always what they appear to be. I don't think it was Prince's intention to come off like a prick. The media created all of this drama behind his performance. When I watched it the 1st time I missed when Ryan Seacrest said that there would not be anymore performers so I only saw Prince onstage. It even seemed like the intro was a setup to me because Ryan said that there were no more surprises more than once. I didn't even pay attention to the fact that he walked off after his performance until all the media hype was involved. I was so elated to see him perform that I didn't pick up on the rest until I watched it on Tivo later on.

Prince IS an arrogant, selfish prima donna, that's one of the things that make him a cool mofo! And has kept him in the public eye and led to a career spanning 28 years or so. You have to adopt that attitude to be up there with the prima donna likes of Madonna, Mariah Carey, Bowie etc.

Cowell can hardly comment on how Prince conducts himself, Cowell selfishly uses and abuses his acts, making money off them and then ditching them when they are no longer as profitable for him. That's a far worse attitude to have.

In my eyes, Prince saved himself on this show BECAUSE of his arrogant cool-as-fuck attitude, he showed that to be a rockstar you need to have attitude as well as a good voice. Being selfish with his career is one of the things that have given him longevity. The crowd cheered more for Prince than any other of the acts - nuff said.

Let these mofo's know. My thoughts exactly! cool

I think that Simon was just playing the game.
He gets it...but I don't think that America gets that he gets it. They hang on his every word as if it's the word of God. For this season, anyway.

Prince showing up on American Idol is like Barbara Streisand showing up at the Bumfuck Meadows Elementary Talent Show. Kinda like killing a fly with a nuclear weapon. Is he serious? What, there were no clubs where he could do his weekly pissing off of people?

I think what people are trying to say is that at some point they're hoping Prince will grow up. While that arrogant, rude boy stuff was cute when Dirty Mind and Purple Rain was out, after a while it gets old. Funny how when Prince wasn't making those hits he went crawling to God and was acting all humble when he really needed his fans and now it's back to . . ., but as long as there is a steady supply of people who can't get enough of people acting like assholes, oh well.

Maybe he wasn't being arrogant...maybe it was shyness or anxiety or any of the other things that come from being in front of a billion people (not performing). Didn't he leave quickly after the SNL performance too? Everyone thought that was so cute. But now that Simon declares it's childish/rude/selfish everyone agrees?

Looks like Prince is going to have to have a tea party for Simon and those other Idol people so that America and the Universe will forgive him.

I think Simon was fare in his criticism of Prince.

Prince simply would've been praised if he just practiced some professional courtesy or plain and simple manners. Being a genius and a gentlemen aren't mutually exclusive notions. neutral

I agree that it's a fair assessment of that behavior. But it might not be a fair assessment of that behavior coming from Prince.

And yes it's Prince's responsibility to communicate his intention. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't. All we can do is speculate. If he was misread, he can always respond.

Someone tell his publicist that the coffee-crack break is over.

Prince was being Prince-you either love that or you hate it. You shouldn't love or hate Prince based on what someone like Simon says-even if you like Simon like I do. I love the fact that Prince never walks the line-people either love him or "think" they hate him until they "get it"(I like Simon, Bono, and David Letterman for the same reasons).

Keep being yourself Prince, even if it means you are an asshole sometimes. I believe you have a great heart, bro'.

I like all these people too. The difference is that their intentions are clear.

Simon plays the "being an ass" game well. Operative words being "play" and "game". He's not a mean/selfish/spoiled person. This is why he works so well.

There was a lot of negative talk on a local radio station where I live, about Prince not wanting to do American Idol from the start.I applaud the way he handled himself on American Idol. Prince being Prince."I am Music"! The news casters on CNN did not have a problem with the way he acted, hell the were saying how they haven't seen him in a while and he hadn't changed a bit. The 2 women making the report about his appearance on AI was positively glowing. biggrin

From some of the comments here tho, I have 2 wonder whether some of the members here are actually Prince aficionados - they've apparently been fans 4 so long 2 know how the man works, yet seem baffled/offended by Prince's gig on American Anus ... who do u think has the goods? If not Prince, then why the hell are u a member here - u obviously AIN'T a fan ... and u have NO TASTE in music! stfu

cool Maybe we don't know the whole story why Prince acted as he did, or maybe he just doesn't like Simon, I can't blame him if he doesn't but Simon is a hypocryte cause to me thats like the kettle calling the pot black and he is just as bad if not worse with his piss poor cruel attitute to people aspiring to become something, there is a right and a wrong way to tell someone they aren't Idol material and Simon has no tact at all!!!!!
Besides who knows what Prince has to go through with all these people so maybe he's just plain fed up but it does look bad if he lets it affect his performance his should be above acting like that but we all have our moments but we are lucky as most of us are not in the spotlight for all to criticize our every move like Prince is
AMERICAN IDOL judge SIMON COWELL has turned his famous barbed comments on PRINCE after being appalled by the pop superstar's surprise performance at the show's finale last week (24MAY06). The PURPLE RAIN hitmaker took to the stage at the Kodak Theatre for a quick run through two new songs before dashing off, refusing to meet the Idol contestants or greet the audience. Idol host RYAN SEACREST has since reported that he feared Prince would be a no-show - because he appeared just minutes before he was due to hit the stage. And Cowell insists Prince's attitude isn't one he'd like Idol winners to display at any time in their career. He says, "It just tells you how selfish he is. He comes on, not a word - 'I'm not gonna sing with anybody else, I'm not gonna say goodbye.' Thank you for your generosity, Prince."

Ok I somewhat agree with Simon on criticizing Prince about his attitude.. He thinks he is larger then life and he shouldn't thank anyone for his success.. Ummmmm news flash buddy. WE ARE THE REASON YOU EXIST in the music world.. I mean come on.. How many Prince fans were in that audience? How many were on that stage that night? Prince acting like he is some kind of god, better then everyone and a complete jerk off is BS.. He needs to pull his head out of his rear and realize, he will lose it all with that tude. It is slowly trickling away as it is.. Sure he still has good sells.. But comparing to his sales like 10 years ago. He is WEAK on them now. Quit being a JERK and respect your fans before you don't have anymore. confused

Simon Cowell complaining about Prince's 'attitude', in addition to being comically ironic, is akin to moving to Seattle and then complaining about the rain. Only to the completely uninitiated would Prince's bash and dash surprise. American Idol knew what they were getting when they booked Prince on the show. To complain about typical behavior from him after the fact is just stupid.
