Puh-lease! Any thoughts of Prince's demise - artistic or otherwise - are extremely premature. Vegas has been a big part of Prince's career for the last 10 years, and the town has been blessed with many great Prince shows and aftershows. Prince's technical abilities as a player, his eccentric sense of style, and his artistic curiosity are always on point in Vegas. He's played rare versions of some of his catalog's most meaningful songs at Vegas aftershows.

It's a 24-hour playground, over the top, easily accessible and built for maximum convenience. These shows could be as cool as the Paisley Park Love4oneanother run in 1995, or the Celebration at Paisley in 2002.

Matter of fact, in Vegas, you don't have to rent a car and drive around at all hours of the night trying to find your way back to the Chanhassen Inn! You can stay right next door at the MGM Grand, or across the street at New York New York, Excalibur or a ton of other places. After the show, you can go out clubbing, or choose from a wide variety of places to eat.

Vegas has always been Prince's perfect playground. He feels appreciated there, and it runs on his timeline. Just like the rest of us, Prince does his best work when he's at ease in an environment of appreciation and respect. I predict that anyone on this board who attends a Prince show in Vegas will have a helluva lot of fun, and they will have good memories of the event for the rest of their lives.

But hey, I'm an optimist, and I can only speak from experience. By all means, you theory and conjecture experts who've never attended a Prince show in Vegas, bitch on! Meanwhile a lot of Prince fans will be enjoying great shows in Vegas this summer.

My take on the Vegas move....

I was actually thinking that this had to do with a couple of things:

1) Vegas has been white hot for the past few years, beyond kitsch value. Many, many stars (incl. the Lindsay Lohan's of the world) have been purchasing homes and making day trips. I do agree with whoever said that Prince is on the tail end of it.

1) He is trying to balance his need to have outlets for his musical expression, with his desire not to "dilute" his cache in such a way that he can't command top dollar. Soon elite LA will tire of his parties and he's not popular enough for folks other than ourselves to be making treks to Minnesota -- we've aged out of that for the most part and the young folks aren't into him enough for that. As was already brought up here, Vegas commands top dollar. What choice does he have?

I think the fact that Vegas is a 24hr, time-defying kind of place, it is a really good fit, considering the hours he keeps.


2) If he doesn't have to travel that much, then he can actually set himself up to have a family. Which, btw, is why a lot of stars are doing the Vegas thing. Celine, Toni Braxton, Gladys Knight....

Vegas, Baby.

Prince is almost 50 years old. He has been on the road most of his career. He has given all of us many chances to see him at average concert ticket prices or less. If he wants to settle in one place for a while and still makes some money,why not? Let the man rest for a while. He has paid his dues on the road, we get our money's worth at a live show.
