You don't like "Condition of the Heart" either, so what are you talking about. i'm not in love with it, but i can see its appeal and its artistry.

Ill never understand that song in the same vein as Still Will Stand All Time and Condition Of The Heart I think 3 Chains and Still Would are vomitrocious myself ... But don't fuck with Condition of the Heart It's funny to see 3 Chains mentioned because that makes me agree with JPW that "Make Your Mama Happy" is definitely one of Prince's litmus test songs. When Prince rips off Queen? it's O.K. When Prince channels Sly? it's a bad thing. I can understand it if you don't like the song. But to mock it as crap???!!?!? [Edited 5/21/06 20:29pm] I didn't even know Prince was channeling Sly with "Make Your Mama Happy". I just think the song sucks. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Its ok. And yeah, come to think of it, the hippy dippy lyrics do have a sly influence.

[Edited 5/21/06 20:29pm] I didn't even know Prince was channeling Sly with "Make Your Mama Happy". I just think the song sucks. Either way, it's your choice. But some of this hate for the song goes along with my theory that a lot of so-called Prince fans don't want to acknowledge certain influences in Prince's music. When it's all rock and roll and Prince is pretending to be guitar god, it's all good. But the minute Prince puts a little funk and soul into the pot (i.e. horns, soul icon influence whether it be Stax, James, Sly or Whatever) it's usually frowned upon by the bulk of folks who say they accept the full spectrum of whatever Prince does.

"Who's draws?" I only frowm when prince was using too much of his "trying to be rap" influence..where most of the time it sounded like Ice T..which worked 1/2 the time. But P's Funk influence is amazin..U can hear everything from James to P-Funk to creating his very OWN funk...And this wouldnt be too far off from a remake of a Sly bootleg or something. Love the song..love it Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Love the song..love it Exactly... and even if the lyrics are hokey. Hell, so is Everyday People and Dance to the Music is doesn't make them any less great. Make Your Mama Happy isn't of the same caliber but I can hear where it derived from. Beyond that, it's just a feel good jam. But, alas, some folks still don't get the concept of a jam. These are probably the same folks who are shitting on that hour long rehearsal of Soul Psychodelicide in that particular thread. I'm remembering why I don't post in this forum either

I think a lot of fans really love his soul/funk stuff. Sign o' the Times is the most revered album around here, and then 1999. Neither of those is really a "guitar" record, although they do have some rock elements. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Little Red Corvette, the Purple Rain and ATWIAD albums, etc. he's never sold as many albums as an R&B artist as he has as a rock artist. where exactly is the problem in people liking Prince's rock music over his soul/funk music?

I think most Prince fans enjoy the full spectrum of what he does. He's just done much better soul/funk offerings than this. [Edited 5/22/06 0:47am]

I put it on my kids' iPods. Does that count?

I don't care who Prince's influences were James, Jimi, Carlos, Sly, George, Larry or whoever. I just think this particular song is just not good. It falls squarely in the category with All My Deams, Splash and other corny, overdone bullshittery from that period of his career. . [Edited 5/23/06 16:14pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
