"I Hate U" is one of Prince's best singles of the 90s.That song is so soulful and powerful. How can anyone criticize those clever lyrics?

I never thought that U would be the one
After all the things that we've been through
U gave your body to another in the name of fun
I hope you had some baby,if not,boo hoo

lol love it! Those lyrics are bitter, but sorta funny, too

P Control
The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (Single mix was better, imo)
Shy
Eye Hate U

thumbs up!

The rest is kinda so-so to my ears. I used to rate it much more highly but it fails to move me much these days.
A lot of flash and little substance and also horrendously over-produced.

Eye Hate U is typical dull Prince balladry with questionable lyrics

What do you question about the lyrics?

I guess:

"Close your eyes, I'm gonna cover your ass with this sheet/And I want you to pump your hips like you used to/ and baby you better stay on the beat!"

sounds slightly evil.

Art is subjective. Its just a matter of personal taste...."I don't like it" is an entirely valid response. It wouldn't matter how detailed you made your argument that TGE was "classic Prince', in the end it'd just be a long winded way of saying "I like it".

Sure "I don't like it" is a valid response. However, if you are try to get a dialogue going, or trying to exchange thoughts, it doesn't really help. Maybe movie and music critics should not explain why they don't like a film The Davinci Code Would a review that simply states "I don't like it" be in anyway helpful or even worth reading? No. Reviews like this also don't really add a whole lot to a an exchange on a website like this either. It's just a lazy way out.

It's fuckin' AWESOME, that's what.

I remember my moist and panting anticipation of this album... I was 17 and had been a Prince fan for years, but was only just then reaching what would be the heights of famnaticism (say that five times fast). This was the first Prince album where I was all hip to the release date and shit, just pining away for that day.

On the blessed day, I took the bus from school to the wrecka stow, where I unwrapped the cassette (yes, cassette, children) like a twelve-year-old boy with his first copy of Penthouse. I popped that baby into my Walkman and it proceeded to Blow. Me. Thefuck. Away. From that scream in "Endorphinmachine" to the guitar solo of "Gold," I was drool !!!pwned2the9s!!! drool

"Dolphin" was love at first listen, and "Shy" made me want to fuck and cry at the same time. "P Control" is BAD FUCKING ASS and always has been. I distinctly remember listening to "Eye Hate U" and swearing up and down that the muthafucka had totally been reading my journal! I had written a really bad poem with the same I-hate-you-because-I-love-you-but-I-can't-love-you-because-I-hate-you theme. eek

I remember calling my boyfriend (yes, boyfriend, children - The Mistress was a queer femme bi dyke in high school) and telling him he HAD to meet me in the park that night. I brought my Walkman and we listened to the album over and over, sharing the headphones. music

Ahh, memories.

And THAT's What So Great About The Gold Experience.

But that was the question. Everyone says they love the album, but the songs get picked on a lot individually.

This CD is a classic from start to finish! I love the energy and the sound Prince had at this time. NO ONE can mess with:
P Control
Endorphinemachine (Cowbells and all!)
Shhhh
The Most Beautiful...(but I LOVE the single version WAY more)
Dolphin thumbs up!
Billy Jack Bitch
:i:Hate U drooling
Gold

Prince was in the motherfucking zone at that time!

I thought that might happen.

Don't get me wrong. I was just transitioning from Prince fan to being obsessed to the point of needing clinical supervision when Lovesexy came out, so it has a huge sentimental value for my.

But after SOTT and all the boots I was consuming at the time I just found it noisy and distracting. I still do mostly. I rarely listen to it although I adore the concerts, rehearsals and aftershows from that period. I hunt them down fiercely.

I just didn't find Lovesexy very funky. And I like the funk.

Love the percussion on Dance On though. I have the 12" vinyl's with the clear sleaves and there was some great stuff on those. Especially on the I wish U heaven one.

Oh and I love Glam Slam, especially the concert when he pulls down the blindfold.

Now look, you got me waxinbg nostalgic about Lovesexy.

I was just listening to that when I came across this thread. ("Came across this thread" doesn't sound very PG does it?)

I'm not a huge cowbell fan or anything but I think it fits that song. Maybe I'm just used to it now.

Very Very overrated album

Only decent track is "eye hate u" especially the Eric Leeds instrumental version on the cd single.

BUT even that song which I love is still a little cringe worthy with that embarrassing courtroom like banter.

But almost everything from this era is cringe worthy, "pussy control" geeez

"We March" almost everything about this album is a too little dorky for my taste

Yeah, whether you like the song or not, the over-all concept of Prince putting his girlfriend on trial for 'doing him wrong' is quite original I would say. Although he kind of touched upon it on Witness For The Prosecution before.

Aside from my personal taste, what I think is great about The Gold Experience is its roar. Prince was mighty pissed off from 93-95 and this anger splashed all over his music at the time. That scream near the end of "Endorphinmachine" pretty much sums it up- guttural and out for blood! Because of that, The Gold Experience lives up to the "badass" legacy that Prince fostered in the early 80s, and I think that is why it appeals to many around here.

Personally, I adore this album. There isn't one track that I ever want to skip.

I get the impression that Prince fans who grew up mostly in the 90s like Gold more than those who listened to Prince in the 80s. I listen to the maxi single of Eye Hate You more than the Gold cd.
