Sign of the Times - It

sometimes a song just passes me by and then one day jumps up and bites me on the arse. I posted a thread a while back on Private Joy, another song I overlooked for a long time. 'It' falls into the same category. Just listening to it again just now. What a great song. I've been into Prince for years and years, and I've listened to this track over and over, but it only clicked with me today.

cool

I love it when that happens. I was like that w/Private Joy and Let's Work. I used to just breeze through them, like Ehhh.....but now I LOVE them both!

Oh and International Lover too.

Strange.

"It" has recently been in my high rotation. The dark, "uncommon" synth sounds he uses on that 1 were ahead of their time, and noone has used sounds like that ever. As much as I love that album, and have listened 2 it over a thousand times, "It" was never up there in my favs... I just recently felt that I had 2 hear it, because that and "Hot Thing" come 2 mind when listening 2 '3121'... particularly "Love". It's amazing that 'Sign O' The Times' was such an incredible piece of work, thoroughly... all 4 sides, that a jem like "It" gets overlooked. It is phenomenal... and it's eerie, machine-like minimalism, and tortured urgency is, yes, yet another form of classic Prince.

Peace.

G.

This is one that always goes really soon in SOTT survivor threads I remember, usually 2nd after 'Slow Love'.

Don't understand it myself, I always thought it was great, but I guess the competition is high on the album.

Certainly all the tracks are strong, including It. But I am trying to think of one that It is better than or that I like less than It...maybe SLow Love or The Cross...Maybe Forever in My Life.

I hated IT when it came out, it sounded so stupid (musically speaking) but these days, I like it, not for the rhythm or arrangement, but for the actual notes, the composition, and the gongs... its like depeche mode meets NIN in elemntary school. razz

I dig this song, it's one of my favorites on the album. I like the line when he goes "With U I swear, I'm a maniac". That's what got me to the song. But I have to say the bad thing about the song it that Prince keeps sayin' the same thangs over and over and over. I wish "It" had more verses and less chorus's.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

The reason "It" is often overlooked is that it is so repetitive lyrically. Which is a shame because the music itself is Prince at his best.

I, also, passed this song by when I first bought SOTT.
Now, it's my favorite song after "If I Was Your Girlfriend".

I don't understand... the actual music sounds like something anyone does when they first get a sequencer.

it's like childsplay compared to the intricate originality of the looped beat/bassline of of "Housequake". I think my mom could program IT.

IT doesn't even sound like Prince made that beat... more like some depeche mode cover band....

nuts

I really like how P made the linn sound the way it does on IT. Actually, the beat can be hears in the live version of 'when doves cry' during the parade tour. I guess P started playing some stuff over that beat in the studio, and came up with 'It'. Just interesting to see how some songs seem to flow from other songs. Another example is how 'New power generation' morphed into 'Get off'

btw.. the 'gongs' probably find their origin in the linndrumm.. they sound like the pitched-down 'crash' program to me.

I always felt the drum programming was too similar to When Doves Cry, but it never had a killer tune to go with it. So it sunk without a trace.

Looking back, I enjoy it more now, its just a shame Prince didn't use the slot on the album for something like Good Love, Witness or Rebirth of the flesh.

This has forever been one of my FAVORITE Prince songs! This song gets so ignored but I think there has always been something compelling and real about this song. I can't think of too many songs that sound like it...or give me the feeling this song does. lol I was such a Sign of the Times addict!

A lot of love for this song then. It is quite understated, but I honestly love it. It's moved into my Prince Top 10 i think

Snap

You know it'd be cool if Prince made "It" part of one of his piano medleys. The drums are so overbearing on the album that it's easy to miss the beautiful harmony hidden underneath,
